Man, I feel this one but more so just about the playerbase being toxic. I haven't played on horizon since my ban in July. Over the past couple of weeks it came out that the head gm had broken a lot of rules, things she did on Eden as well. I had issues with her for years, so I was more than happy to shitpost about it. The harassment I had received since July kicked up a few notches including threats. Long story short, Spicyryan on reddit continuously told me I'm not being threatened and refused to delete a post that has both mine and my husband's first name. If my harasser didn't have my husband's name, he does now. The gaslighting is actually insane. Spicyryan actually telling a person who has received threats that they are not being threatened and ignoring a request to remove names on a thread about doxxing. People coming out of the woodworks to say they are actually happy I am being threatened. Why, because I was critical of GM Violet and Kipling's long standing issues? I always defended my ls and I can be mouthy about it? I guess in this community if you criticize horizon or staff in any way, you're deserving of harassment and threats.

How do you know he's not a goggles type of guy?

Genuine question: after your ban what's been the point of continuously posting about it on reddit and here? Why not just walk away from it all? It's obviously been causing you problems yet you've been going on about since July. So as much no one deserves harassment you honestly had the chance to just close all connection with Horizon and the people there and move on before it got to this point. Like what's the end game.

I still have a number of friends on private servers and talk to them daily. I've posted a bit too much the past 3 weeks due to being stuck in bed with covid. Finding out the GM who had it out for me for years was finally outed after I was gaslit for 4 years any time I called her out felt like a bit of a victory for the private server community. I do still hope for a classic server or an eden 2.0 with honest staff. I suppose I also felt like people should be warned before committing so much time into a private server with staff issues. We all know this game is a massive time sink. If I were new to the community I would want information on the servers so I could make a decision on where to put my time. My frequent posting came off as me being angry to others, which I wasn't, just more so annoyed about how it all happened.

I'm too stubborn and pressed things too much, though, and upset some manic individual. Trust me I know I've sunk too much time in trying to respond to people who will believe whatever they want no matter what.

expecting unpaid volunteers to act to perfection is seriously delusional.

obviously if this person was harassing you they should be removed as a mod, but every classic server or eden 2.0 will have "bad apples" because every single operating entity on this planet has "bad apples". take your picketing to the local target asking for a "target 2.0" because someone wouldn't let you return your black friday TV or some ***. at least those people are getting paid

Try camping kings, Tiamat, and 24/7 with your HNMLS, taking literal sleep shifts, night watches, to alarm five to eight other “dedicated” people in the dead of night to come claim the damn things. Or even worse—-when you had actual competition everyone sets their alarms for the windows disrupting your collective sleep even further.

You wanna play the real XI? Be prepared to wait literal years for that Duelist’s Chapeau, or Ridill, or Herald’s gaiters, or Novio Earring, because there’s a lot of people ahead of you.

You wanna play the real XI? Sit in town ALL day on a DD job LFP. When you finally get one you EXP for five hours straight—-only to get half a level because no one brought a refresher and the healer was a SMN that only had Cure 3.

Clearly people love torture so give them torture. I haven’t played Horizon but I highly doubt it is a 1:1 of the “vanilla” experience of XI. Or maybe it is. Do what’s fun? I won’t judge. I don’t think a forum like this is the best place for it though.

This. The fact that a lot of Horizon players already have a Ridill just tells me enough. Ridill was so rare to drop, and was so rare for you to get. I have said it once, and I will say it again: I have found that the people who play on Horizon is due to them not being able to get carried on retail anymore.

I guess the takeaway is: because they're volunteers, we can't have any expectations for PS staff? There was a similar comment about their code quality, that it's fine because they're all just volunteers, so you can't expect much.

OK, sounds like excellent evidence to not play PS, since they're run by unprofessional morons and you can't have any expectations of professionalism at any level. You're right.

I mean, that's obviously nonsense. Volunteers are just people, and they can be high or low quality, just like an employee of a company.

I think in some ways the XI community has unnaturally high expectations for volunteers, in large part because of the extremely high quality of some its longest running projects: the Windower and Ashita teams in particular have done fantastic work for years and years and years. AH has its moments and weird breakage in places but its core function has worked continuously for the better part of two decades. We have well-maintained wikis.

Everything that people think of as modern XI has been built by its community, and I think it's not unlikely that people are expecting PS staff to hold to those same standards. They aren't even wrong, most of the time! I certainly haven't heard this level of drama coming out of CatsEye or Nasomi, or even about Horizon until recently.

Every private server has top down corruption. Some are just bigger than others. It's an inevitability.

(Square is also corrupt, it's not a private server issue, it's a human issue) You either take motivated by money or motivated by power. There is no alternative. "only way to win is to not play" etc

Any developer will tell you, open source projects routinely have higher code quality than "professional" enterprise projects.

That's largely a function of the "people who write code for fun" and "really good programmer" Venn diagram having a large overlap.

Like, that doesn't make it any less true, but it's an effect, not a cause.

There is an order of magnitude greater criticism on open source projects then you will ever get for close source, and as it is one of the 3 virtues of a great programmer hubris drives us to make code people will not say bad things about.

The more eyes on the code the more chances errors and ambiguity will be questioned and subsequently addressed.

From a player perspective, there's a large difference between "the company I'm giving money to is trying to make money" and "the people who have power over my character are harassing me, banning for social reasons, doxxing, talking ***about me behind my back to other players, and directly competing with me for in-game items"

Does anyone have any screenshots to share of SE GMs sexually harassing people, banning players for talking ***about SE online, or banning players because of comments they saw on Discord, or disparaging comments in linkshell chat?

Edit: bet if a SE GM did those things and it was reported to SE, they'd be fired and not continue to do it to other people. Because companies have standards.

I never camped Tiamat or any other dragon, it's funny how you take 1% of the content and use it to argue that Retail was horrible.

I also never suffered to get equipment that cost me so much time like relic head RDM or Ridill, you could be relevant and play FFXI without that equipment, that is the greatness of FFXI.

And I have raised 2 DD for Horizon to the maximum level, I have never spent hours waiting for parties, it is not as horrible as you make it out to be, and the party exp is still the best leveling system I have experienced in my 20 years playing MMORPG.

You don't like era 75, ok, but it is your partial opinion and without being objective, stop using meaningless arguments.

I mean—-it’s pretty hard to say I hate 75 content when I lived and breathed it for several years. I loved every minute of it until SE took me out back and put me out of my misery. It’s a good thing they did too, because it helped turn my life around.

I love telling war stories of the old days. But the fact that I have those memories says a lot. In some ways it’s absolutely pitiful. All I’m saying is that life wasn’t for everyone and wasn’t healthy and that game design engineered to keep you subbed and addicted can be dangerous. So on one hand I’m supporting the argument of private servers. On the other hand, private servers kinda look like they are worshipping a very miserable time in my life and people like me. Again, drive on, but the Horizon experience isn’t how it used to be. The game is completely solved. And at the end of the day private server or retail none of what we do actually matters.

Lol complete BS. I have seen many videos of that server where people are taking 40m to 1hr waiting to fill psrty slots, mostly mages. I have seen people take literally 20m to run to a camp. It is as horrible as most remember and only gets worse the more top heavy or lower pop gets.

Party exp is still in XI, find it funny none of them are clamoring to make exp parties and grind trash mobs on retail.

none of them are clamoring to xp in retail because ITS A DIFFERENT GAMEPLAY EXPERIENCE and they don't want that specific experience, and that's okay. all the other asinine arguments aside, i can't wrap my head around how you aren't getting that folks have different gameplay preferences and just because YOU don't find something enjoyable doesn't mean others have to follow suit. you don't have to understand or agree with anyone's reasoning for what they enjoy, do you understand?

it's so weird to me i can't help but respond lol. it's like telling someone who likes ranch on their salad that they should just use blue cheese because he likes it and he cant understand why anyone would dare use ranch when blue cheese is an option - they're both salad dressings after all.

No one expects perfection, but there are some amazing staff members in the community who do some great work while still treating everyone fairly. Godmode, Slamm, Lavond, Ah Puch, Ino Uno, Cyphun, Revel, Aneyus, Setzor, Loxley, Tracent, Hugin, some anonymous GMs I don't know who they really are, and so many other devs behind the scenes who put in hours of unpaid work either now or in the past between Horizon/Eden and they don't put people down because they are in a position of power.

When you have a head GM on two servers giving her linkshell advantages that other LSs don't have and outright cheating while also convincing everyone that the person calling her out is a crazy person and convincing all her friends on staff of the same thing so that she can have that person banned, or having a head developer spend more time being condescending to players instead of trying to understand actual player experiences to find improvements, it sullies the reputation of the private server community as a whole. The irony in it for me is that there's not that many staff members I actually have a bad experience with, but because one was a head GM who had it out for me, that already put me on people's shitlist even though I never even talked or played with them. The more I went against that person, the more people believed I was the poophead bad guy they heard that I was.
