I remember when I first saw Bloodtear Baldurf in La Theine Plateau. I was around lvl 55 PLD and I "believe" I could take him with no problem. I LOL so much after getting hit twice and being half dead only to used my 2h to run for the zone.
I didn't make. I believe he used Mighty Strike as I was running. He also killed the a couple of rdm and whm that was trying to raise me. It was like a trap.

I have 2 brady guides...though right now the only one I can find is under my bed and its from 2004. The other guide when I last saw it was being held together with duct tape.
Spells only go up to lvl50.
I used them quite alot and they have writing all over them from my note taking.
I found the quest guide and maps really useful at the time...ofcourse now they're horridly outdated and theres better resources for maps and such.

i remember my first PT, was in konschtat highlands... they told me to pull a sheep and i pulled a ram instead because i thought thats what they meant.. they kicked me. later that day i get a valkurm PT, i get there and ask how they got to the 2nd part of the map, and if i had to go through that swampy lookin place to get there.. they kicked me.

my brady guide for ffxi and pso are both held together with duct tape, they fall apart SO EASY.

Most of this happened before the NA release of the game even happened.
Lvl cap was 70 when NA release came out, 75 cap happened month and a half later so not much of a competition, lol.
And when was mnk ever a major tank? I've read about the whole, mnk/thf thing where SA worked on every hit of raging fists but I don't think mnk was really expressly used as a tank much.
Oh mnk tanked then and so did war/mnk. I had tanked as thf with another thf for a pt before also. Was fun times., ppl didnt think me and the thf would handle it, but all we did was back to back SA and voke :)

Yea, I was in S. Korea when FFXI first came out, so I managed to get a JP copy. Man, trying to figure everything out was a ***!
On top of that, I got a lot of raised eyebrows when people realized I couldn't speak japanese >.> I also tried to make an inconspicous name for my first character so I didn't stick out too much (Tokitung)
