It's mostly a matter of momentum at this point.

If you've been here, and are basically caught up on content, and have competent people to do things with, there's still an awful lot of fun to be had here.

If you've been gone, or you're behind on content, or don't have those people, you have a pretty lengthy climb awaiting you. Honestly, you're probably going to be better off finding something else to do with your time.

Be aware of something regardless of your decision: this is not the FFXI you remember. It's not even the FFXI that people who quit six months ago remember.

I will just say this: if you quit before because you were bored or just not having fun anymore at that specific point, be aware there is absolutely nothing refreshing about the game now, so you're coming back to be bored again. Instead if you simply quit for rl reasons then you can give it a try, but as Rooks said if you're behind it won't be an easy catch up without friends willing to go through those stages as well.

While there are things you can do on your own(bayld gear and reive gear, skirmish can be lowmanned if you have a couple of friends), the rest requires a group capable of killing the new NMs.
Speaking of Adoulin content specifically.

May as well have just put "Paging Draylo".

Seriously, though, there has never been a better time to start from scratch with FFXI, there has also never been less of a reason to.

Dual boxing doesn't hurt, but this isn't Abyssea anymore. Don't expect to get top grade gear by dual boxing everything on your own.

OP said he hasn't played in 2 to 3 years, and after a glance at last equipped item set, I'd say there may be some to accomplish inside abyssea still.

Depending on what jobs he's looking at leveling, there is quite a lot of gear that can be skipped from Abyssea.

My point though was that SoA content was not going to be dual boxed in the same way he did Abyssea.

Relics unfortunately are no longer worth the effort (until they update). You can do much better working on a plasm/delve weapon. Of course, if you love grinding out dyna every day to get outdated gear that's up to you.

Compare:
Mandau
aphotic kukri which can be augmented

or izhiikoh if you're really lucky.

I have to disagree about the Relic thing. Yes they wont do as much base damage, nor do I think SE will ever make them the best weapons around, but the journey to get one is still an accomplishment to me. Aside from seeing Aegis and Ragnarok most of the time, it's still awesome to see people with a 95/99 relic running around. I finished Kikoku a couple weeks back and aside from only using it for trials, it's still awesome to have.

So if you've ever really wanted to build a relic for the sake of completion, go for it man. Worst case you waste a month coming back and trying it, and you move on. Everyone will have a varied opinion because everyone plays / has different goals. IMO, Come back for a month, work on your relic while you look around and see if its your time to play and if there's anything you'd like to accomplish that 3 years ago you couldn't.

As someone coming back from a 5 month break, (pre-SOA) nothing would be more disheartening for me than coming back to spend a month creating an "ultimate" weapon to find out that it's crap. I'm just letting him know that his goals for gear from 2-3 years ago should be reviewed compared to new (easier to obtain) gear. I understand the whole idea of doing things for the sake of completion, but I'd want to know what is currently good compared to what I thought was good before I left.

The game has changed quite a bit now. And you do need a good social LS and the ability to make a few friends and being social to other player in the game. If you can do that then there are literally gazilion things for you to do from old content to new content.

A lot of people said Abyssea is too easy and can be soloed etc... which is true if you have been there from the start and get everything you wanted. As returning player, you may be in a bit of a struggle in the beginning, but if you can make a few friends, then Abyssea would be very fun playground for you. Voidwatch would be the struggle you will face if you want to do it since it requires 12-18 people and the popularity has died down a lot (until SE fix R/M/E - and quadruple the damage, then you will see VW shouts daily every hour). Legion is pretty much a rare thing, so is Neo Einherjar, Neo Limbus etc... Dynamis you can solo daily. Neo Nyzul you just need a group of friends. If you can make 5 friends and static the game is pure joy and extremely addictive.

Seekers of Adoulin content was way too rough at launch but it is getting better and better with every update. It will probably gets better later. So far it is more targeted to players who have completed the Abusea, Neo Dyna, Neo Nyzul, Legion... But there are plenty of content for casuals and newbie as well. This expansion is literally handing out the best gears to you at this point, WoW style. You have to do a bit of work - but it is totally doable if you put some time gearing up your character. Support jobs and healers (plus paladin) is highly sought after.

If you like FFXI before then you will love it again, but if you just want to sit AFK doing nothing but having an e-peen shout contest, and expecting gears to be delivered to your moogle box, then don't come back lol. It is social game, if you can't make friends, then it is going to be a rough experience.

If you are gonna make mandau with the certain intention of 99ing it then by all means go ahead and make one. Its better to make it now instead of waiting till later cause the prices of the marrows will inevitably sky rocket again once the R//M/E update hits. I've seen marrows as low as 8.5 mil on my server and you can bet that wont remain the case once the update hits. That being said only do it if you know you are taking it to 99 for sure. Don't bother making one just to leave at 95, its a waste of gil that would be better spent elsewhere.
