I Miss The Old XI
By chrono123430 2013-03-29 16:42:14
I started playing FFXI some time in 2003, I played until roughly a year before abysea was added and I enjoyed every moment of it. I'd had my account stolen, had it rolled back, gotten married ingame to someone I still talk to regularly, leveled several jobs to 75, solo'd BST to 75 back in the day, participated in all endgame events and met some very great people.
I started as a warrior swinging at bees in Windy with a sword and shield, reading over the 2003 guidebook several times and hoping to one day become a paladin. I was fairly young when I started this game, so it was a fairly big part of my childhood and teenaged years. I didn't accomplish much, but I enjoyed all of the time I spent ingame.
I'm not sure why I made this thread, but I was looking back at some old screenshots from 2004ish and really started missing the game. The way the game used to be.
I remember having every exp zone and their level ranges memorized, unlocking my first subjob, noob parties, my first ferry trip and hiding downstairs to avoid the kraken. Also killing my first ram outside Holla and having to use my 2 hour lol
Limit breaks, rank missions, 15million gp scorpion harnesses, seeing one of the very few relics on the server.
Does anyone else miss the old FFXI? Back when leveling took dedication, when questing required groups and people acually spoke in party chat for hours while staticing jobs? And does anyone even know what a magic burst is in 2013?

Lots people miss the old days. We don't miss all the BS that came along with it though.

I couldn't be assed to level a job to 75 the old way anymore. I'd have my original 6 75s and left it.

So what's stopping you? People level "naturally" all the time. No one is forced to be right on top of all the latest, fastest tips. I hang out in static parties all the time. Are there relics everywhere? I guess. Mine took a lot of time/work to get, so I'm pretty happy about it. And when I see someone running around with a Kenkonken or Conquerer or something, I stop to admire, and cheer them on if I know them. My first ferry trip, was like yours - a long time ago. Guess what? Hurrying to log in after Adoulin went live and warping over there for the first time was pretty cool. I even watched the entire cutscene - no spamming of the spacebar.
So... what's your problem? Are you sad because other people have cooler stuff than you - or they get it faster? Sure, I get. That's when I remind myself to pay attention to my own ***, not theirs.

Leveling the old way was rarely ever fun, you can book burn if you still prefer a grind, and skilling up doesn't take 2 weeks.

Oh boy, you dun did it now, chrono123430. You miss the old days, and the majority of the forum posters don't! Commence the ridicule, because you're WRONG! How dare you like the older version of the game!
tl;dr You're wrong because others disagree.
By chrono123430 2013-03-29 17:01:04
When I returned to the game no one was looking to group up. They'd get to level 30 and then AFK in abysea parties until 99. After this they proceed to skill up to cap and then grind more abysea for merits/gear
I mostly just miss the more team oriented gameplay and slower pace of everything

Lmao, what a lovely community this forum has. I was just thinking back to when I was enjoying the game the most and wondering if anyone else could relate. It's pretty funny how you all jump onto this like a pack of wolves.

Spamming of the space bar? I can understand the enter key, but pressing the space bar would just open the chat and make you type spaces. I can picture you watching the CS and being all like, "I'll type spaces, Lion loves spaces."
Really though, is that a different keyboard setting? I've always used compact, so I have no clue.

Please.
The expansion is a day old, you have barely any idea of what elements they might have brought back.
You need at least 2 more weeks for this thread to break out of its egg.

Yes we don't miss the horrible crap we went through. But you have to remember all the good times we had with our friends. Back then having 75 is endgame access but there was content that had lower level caps.
Hell... I even felt so proud defeating Maat 1st time as a goal. I didn't always go to exp parties just to hit 75. There were always moments where you can enjoy the game then just hitting max level just to get somewhere.

You don't have to pay someone to do it for you overnight. You can join a non-RMT group and actually participate. You can be just as active in an experience point party as you used to be, but get much more out of your time. And if you don't want to, you don't necessarily have to. That's what makes this method better; you have a choice.
If you want to work harder for your EXP prior to level 70-75 or so, then do Fields/Grounds of Valor. It really is that simple. Failing that, there is always the option of doing a Level Sync party, which people do still participate in. The only problem is that you actually have to start it yourself, and actively search for members (like in the "good ole days"). Personally, I leveled BST duo with my sister "the old way" plus some Grounds of Valor up until level 75. The options are there; take them.

I wouldn't actually finding a "regular" exp party nowadays to back then, but you're right. OP, just find some like minded folks and roll with them. It'll be a heck of a lot harder to find but try to form a static with some folks.

I got eight 75 jobs before SE introduced level sync, and first was PLD, which I had to leech in friend's manaburns to max since no one wanted PLDs into exp parties past 73+. Levels 1-75 took me a year and a half as a casual player. I did join a HNM/sky ls at lv 68 and I was basically useless and got nothing out of the LS because everyone else was already 75 and way ahead of everything. Talk about not knowing a thing how systems worked added with naive trust towards people I didn't know.
When I look back at those times, the endless grinding for exp (which included farming gil for better gear, AF quests, limit breaks, waiting time for party invite if any), missions (especially level capped CoP which took so long it made me forget the storyline), camping mobs, meriting, hours and hours long events (sky/sea/dynamis) slow traveling to everywhere even with teleports and outpost warps... I can simply say this:
;tldr; No thanks. You can still do all the old things thought. No one's stopping you.

The only thing I miss is the sense of community, period.
Oh and some old friends who don't play anymore. EXP? LOL, you must be trippin. 6hrs LFP with 0 invites does not a good MMO make.

Should just put all these kinda threads into one big thread and then bring back one of the old servers and move all these nostalgic posters onto that server and cap it at level 75 again and make it twice as time consuming and repetitive as it was before just to make sure they get to relive the experience.

The reason people hate these threads is that the nostalgic posters always seem to conveniently forget the glaring negatives in the old-school game model, mainly the horrific time sink required to accomplish anything, even something as simple as just getting into an experience party.

Man, I miss the days when RMT monopolized NMs and Sky and controlled the economy with an Iron Fist and NQ Haubergeons were 25 Mil. It also took 3 months to level a job to 75 because exp camps were so overcrowded and exp/hr was ***. Oh and assisted exping didnt exist back then, there was no such thing as a whm powerleveler. nope. not. at. all.
