Honestly, you can probably get a pc that can play FFXI for free from sites like freecycle or craigslist.
If you don't want to go that way you can likely find a rather cheap one via refurb online or on ebay. But more importantly... it's 2011, how is it that you have internet but no pc?
Exactly. The same people who probably upgraded to a PS2 in the first place to play newer FF titles, now are sandbagging and refuse to budge.
It's not just a matter of preference anymore. The game can't continue to grow. When a plant outgrows it's flowerpot, you get a bigger flowerpot(or just plant directly in the ground), not stand there and hope it'll find a way to grow around it.

While I don't have a PC, I do have a laptop that can run two characters at the same time just fine. But I agree completely with your last statement; who doesn't have a PC/Laptop by now? Unless you're like a Mac only user...

You can install FFXI on Mac takes a bit of time but you can if you wanted.
Plenty of gamers have been upgrading consoles for years to play newer version of games, all the way back to stepping up from an Atari 2600 to a 5200 for a newer Pacman. Seriously, the game has had a long, good run on PS2. Get with the times.
If I found out that the game I continue to play and enjoy, was coming to a screeching halt because of my console's limitations, I'd upgrade in a heartbeat. If you can afford a monthly subscription fee for a video game, you can afford a cheap, used console or POS PC to play on.

I don't really place a difference in definition between pc and laptop. to me PC means a computer meant for personal use be it a laptop or desktop. I actually include macs in with PC's. Yes, their marketing tries to make them "Different" but it's still a personal computer regardless of marketing fluff. It's not technically supported but you can play on a mac with wine, just not recommended for your average computer user's skill level...

Atari 5200 sucked though lol
It did! My family skipped it and got a 7800. I played a 5200 demo in a store and my parents weren't impressed enough to warrant a purchase. I used the example as a straight progression, would've looked odd if I skipped a system.
They seem to be trying more and more to justify dropping PS2 support.
This won't fix deep ingrain problems like the FPS cap, because the game is coded like that. But it will make it more likely that newer areas that require more HDD space will be a viable outcome.
The PS2 support needs to be dropped if this game wishes to evolve.
But don't hope for a full remake, because that isn't going to happen. The only thing this will entail is new areas, mobs and anything stopped by the PS2's HDD size.

Memory allocation is the big issue. Ram not HDD space.
I want 100 inv! I also want everything in the auto translate...

when this game came out in NA it was 100$ with the HDD for ps2. for $100 now you can easily get a used pc that can run this game. if you get a pc from the last 4 years most likely you can run a new version of the game if it ever comes. point is, if you had 100$ to play this when it came out, you can't cry poverty over dropping ps2 support now.
ninja edit: anyone want to buy a backward 60gb ps3? :o

Both are issues.
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I haven't played on ps2 for years and haven't even kept my ps2 updated as a back up anymore for quite a while either so I have no certainty on the subject but aren't ps2 hdds 40 gig drives? Not that it really matters as either limitation cause issues but I am curious what the current ps2 install size is.

It is the ram that is the issue... The 40gigs on the HDD arn't even half way used up and the partition if you install ps2 format on the PS3 is only I think 11gigs.

Semi-related question:
Does anyone know why the newer models of PS3 are not backwards-compatible like the one described here by Ducea?
I have a "slim" model PS3, and it's great. Does PS3 games (obviously), can download "classics" PSX games, does Netflix streaming, MLB.TV live games, plays Blue-Ray movies, etc.
The only thing it doesn't do ... is play PS2 games.
Mac's are totally cooler because it's not mainstream. It's also safer!
Who tries to make a virus for a toaster anyway?
EDIT: Also Elana, the reason Sony gave was due to PS2 discs causing certain hardware parts to degrade much faster when reading PS2 discs. Don't know if that's their version of "PS2 Limitations" though. Haven't bothered to really look into PS3 specs.

What is this I don't even...
What is a Mac? Oh, it's a personal computer. It's like saying I don't wear shoes, I wear Nike's.

I took my japanese SCPH-10000 PS2 and it's harddrive out of the closet, hooked it up and connected to PlayOnline...
Then I answered this:
(Yes I'm not lying and yes I'm an IDIOT for giving them that much money ... -__-;)
People who believe that the PS2 is the reason why they can't rework the game is obviously WRONG.
The reason they didn't rework the game yet is COST. Now that they're willing to buff up the game, an solution for keeping the PS2 while upgrading the PC is obviously possible.
So people just need to be HONEST while answering the survey.
Edit:
HDD size is obviously NOT an VALID excuse:
(Top of the picture: Free Space 24448 Megabytes)

"What is a Mac? A miserable pile of insecurities!"

1million times this! i like how ppl think that dropping ps2 support will make better graphic and all the nice things you ever wanted over night.
Am i the only one seeing that getting rid of a % of your population(the evil ps2 players) to then shoot more money in a 10years game, might not be the best solution to make more money?
Starting today, we will be conducting a survey on the game client players use to play FINAL FANTASY XI.
How to answer the survey:
After you login to PlayOnline and select FINAL FANTASY XI under "Games", a survey will be displayed. Please place a check mark on the client you use to play FINAL FANTASY XI. (If you use multiple clients to play, please select all that are applicable.)
* This survey will be conducted on all PlayOnline accounts. Once the survey is answered, it will no longer be displayed.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!
Does this mean the end of the PS2 is finally nigh?!
