Seriously, WTF are they doing? Honestly, Close servers, implement patch, initiate update, open servers. I'd imagine this could have been done like 7 hours ago, if SE didn't take their sweet *** time..
Damn, and I was betting on a 4 hour extension.
Also, 22:00 (PDT) means absolutely nothing to me.. What time CST does it end?

I expected it because to be honest that is a LOT of data/information to move on the server transfer's part.
Plus you have to realize we only download .DAT files and simple related things.
The sheer amount of information they have to edit and make sure works on top of the merge is more than people might think.
Remember those times you copy/paste like 15 gigs of music (at least an example i can use) to a ipod or phone... how it takes like 3254392512 hours.
Plus the new summon battles, NPCs, NM's... it is a LOT of information they need to test and make sure it works properly.
I give them a pass on this one >_>

They could have written them AND tested them over the past 2 weeks, then simply swapped files. They will have screw-ups and follow-up maintenance 2-3 times in the next week anyway.
I think SE just has a big office party or sends everyone home but one guy to save money, and calls it 'Maintenance'. The only thing I can see taking a bit of time is swapping people to active servers, again. Copy and paste.

IIRC, You can make a character on Atomos, but you will be banned within minutes. You have to use a hack to get it to appear.
