I find it ironic that a JP will write "JP ONRY" in English.

Personally, if I'm forming a party, and I don't understand what the *** their search comment says, they get skipped. I don't care if you're that healer or tank I need. If you don't have the common decency to write ***in auto translator, then you're not worth my time.

That doesn't go for just JP people either, it goes for all people who speak a different language for me.

I'm not pulling this "ENGRISH ONRY" elitest BS. I just refuse to try to communicate with people who are unwilling to use the auto translate feature.

I also find it semi-amusing that people will go to such lengths as to use Babelfish or Google translator to attempt to communicate with people that obviously don't want to communicate with them. Why are you kissing their ***? Even if you DO manage to trick them into inviting you because they think you're JP, they'll realize quite quickly you're NOT Japanese. I wouldn't be surprised if many get offended at the notion you're trying to "be like them" since a good majority don't even want us in "their" game to begin with.

i'm english and i'm fairly 'anti-english' mostly due to the HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE ***that gets shouted in whitegate

learning a little japanese would probably make things easier for you, even just simple romaji greetings etc
i'm usually the first person my japanese friends ask to pt
having said that, there are some douches, but that's not racial, that's just human

JP ONRY EVERYONE ELSE GTFO

Segregation

Why are the JP players so... THAT WAY

I am probably forgetting lot of other similar threads where Jaerik posted wall of text to explain stuff.

And as usual people give their opinion (which isn't bad at all) but that still doesn't answer the question or anything. Opinions != facts. And I really doubt that you will ever get fact from asking a such question in here.

I suppose you don't think 7-8 line shout macros in squiggly lines is HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE?

Me != the French :d

Speaking of French, from my experience (!= general case) approaching Japanese players was always easier when I said I was French rather when I didn't (so they automatically assume that you are NA since we have no french community on Garuda).

Dunno about that in game, but IRL that was always the contrary for I actually. Japanese people I've met / worked with was fairly happy when I tried to communicate with them in Japanese (even if my JP complete sux (I just know couple sentences here and there, I've heard on games/anime/pron (latest one is not really useful in an everyday conversation I admit))) and they would try to answer me in French (terrible lol), rather than choosing the easy way and communicate in English.

On this note, it is HILARIOUS when they know you are Eng, but don't know you can read JP typing, and they start talking about you in JP to another JP, like one time I missed a WS or something, and this JP DRG said something like he was laughing at me to another JP, and I said like "All missing that WS did was keep me from adding another 1000 DMG to the 100,000 DMG I've done more then you in this PT." And they both shut up real fast.

Edit**

And for this, I would agree mostly, my friend , since I got a program that helps me read JP, she seems to enjoy being able to type to me in JP rather then English, I assume it makes her feel more comfortable.

Hello double standard!

you missed my point, i don't have a problem with people(of any race) shouting for events in whitegate, it was directed at people shouting HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE crap
if people are shouting useful things i couldn't careless

As I understand it a lot of it has to do with the fact that JP are afraid that their english won't be good enough for us. They're required to take english in school. But of course I sometimes feel the same way, that my Japanese isn't good enough for them.

I speak a little, so I can read certain things in shouts, for example shortly after the last update I saw a JP shout containing the word "Shantotto" so I sent them a tell asking whether they were on the Full Moon Fountain fight or Sacrifical Chamber in auto-trans, and I got an answer back. I forget which, but it wasn't the one I was on. I have a lot of good experiences with JP players, but then I speak more Japanese than the average player.

I wish there were a way to widen the bridge along the gap, but eh do what you can to make their experiences as good as yours.

Welp, I know many people refer to Japanese as "Japs", which last time I checked was derogatory.

Anyway, I'm usually polite by NA standards; I'd never considered the fact that I could still come off as rude to JP players.

Next time I'm playing with JP, I'll make sure to remember what I read here.

Didn't read the thread, but if I had to sum it up with two sweeping generalizations:

We're boorish, they're xenophobic.

Not to mention there's is the language barrier which is just more than some people on either side of the Pacific want to deal with.

Funny how some of you guys are treating JP as some sort of extremely undefined beings. We have to do things in a very specific way to get anything from them. I know it's true but when I really think about it... That's just *** up. Sorry If I can't be myself and get any response from the JP.. Well those JP can kiss my ***. Idgaf.

I agree with Avina. A lot of people who speak English are just plain rude to each other. I believe it's Japanese Tradition to be so polite. I've never met one who isn't. That's just the way they are brought up. Sometimes when I see things like "can kiss my ***. Idgaf," I really don't blame them for wanting to not associate with us. We're rude and mean, even to people who are polite to us.

I don't think it's required to conform to the JP's way of doing things simply to get along or work together with them, but merely to show that you respect the way they do things and make an effort to appease them in some small way as a friendly compromise.

I agree with this completely. I try to be very polite with people I don't know(not to mean I'm disrespectful to people I know; I just mean I treat people I know with less formality than others.) even if I don't particularly like them. And usually, they're friendly right back. But if you keep bad-mouthing them just because they're more polite than you, then you have a problem. <.<

In Japan, even when you get kicked out of a job, it is done in a polite way. Such as making your life unbearable until you end up quitting by yourself, therefore preserving your honor. (politeness being the closest word we have to describe it... obviously it's not exactly polite)

For example: if you kick a member out of a PT (even for valid reasons), the Japanese members will not understand and portray you as evil. It doesn't mean you were wrong, but by ignoring their feelings about it, you're not helping one bit.

Even something as common as the concept of "sarcasm" doesn't exist in Japanese culture/thinking. As a teacher, try telling a class of silent Japanese students that they shouldn't all be answering at the same time... >.> They will think for a minute and then politely reply that no one has answered and that your statement appears incorrect. They won't even for one second consider it humor. You could teach them what sarcasm is, but it would take a while and they wouldn't use it anyway, because it's not polite.

Because of pretty unique social/historical reasons, their reality is hard to match with ours. Expecting them to think like us is naive, self-centered and counter-productive.

It's a good idea to try and understand the Japanese players because I think they're doing what they can to let us enjoy the game in peace. They're not pissing on us, they're politely avoiding us. Give them a break.

Hmmm I know there can be some *** JPs... For isntance, today I had a PT with like half of the members being JP. Around hr, hr and a half in, I had to go afk for like 5min, the JP kicks me and says "Please enjoy your party"... wtf... I was gone for barely a ***'s worth and I'm out........... w/e. On the contrary I've also had some incredibly nice and welcoming parties with japs. It all depends imo, but for the most part it seems there is more prejudice than appreciation.

Makes me laugh reading that Japanese are "naturally polite". People that write that have never spent 10 minutes in Tokyo. They are taught how to speak Politely to project a good image to others, japanese is all about keeping up apparences (looking flashly in the most expensive car, best clothes type of thing). But Japanese culture is designed to be as selfish and self-serving as possible. For example, the Convienant store staff have to talk up to the customers really politely, but the customers treat them like absolute ***.
Hmm.. makes me wonder why i've lived here for the last 3 years hahaha.

Except they're really stingy with the ketchup and BBQ sauce at McDonalds..

Had more experiences with the other half of my people in the USA, tbh!

Someone said earlier that JP are generally more polite and do their best to try to autotranslate when they can.

This is ***.

If anything i see more EN people going out of their way to auto translate everything they can (cause its not just about JP, EU plays ffxi too) more people on this planet speak spanish more than anything and you dont hear them complaining do you? JP players, just for shits and giggles put down your Hello Kitties and sit in WG and count just how many JP actually use the translator in /shout compared to EN players and re-evaluate a new definition of rude. Ive always believed when in mixed company use the common language, its rude to segregate to someones face. Unlike RL, FFXI actually has that common thread (as poor as it may be in certain cases). People comparing JP who play ffxi and JP they see in public IN JAPAN are 2 totally different things.

Someone also commented about a survey recognizing JP are pissed "we" are in "their" game. well how come they arent equally as pissed off at EU players who joined a full year and a half later?? I do realize it usually takes 1 bad apple, but being a player since the NA release I noticed this attitude of pretentiousness right from the getgo on their part. They didnt even know us yet at that point, and the translator sucked even worse than it does now... There was no Alla, no KillingIfrit, no wiki, no ffxiah.com, no Bluegartr, no Mithrapride, no windower, and everything we did we had to ask how to do or either do it trial and error.

SE has been a global company prior to the release of FFXI, its THEIR game, not yours. Based on the way SE likes to *** with its subscribers it doesnt belong to anyone.

That being said, this game plays nothing like the way it did when it was first released, everyone has had to adapt and change playing styles over time. there no longer is a right or wrong way to do things here, and lvl 75 just isnt revered as it once was for a fledgeling NA player surrounded by JP lvl 75s. Big whoop, you have a 75... nowadays everyone who has played a couple months has several.

Skimming through all this I also read that its not the *** that make it worse, its the people who emulate the JP and kiss their *** any way they can. I agree, only because I have yet to see a JP go out of their way to kiss a NA's ***, and I probably never will.

They cant even blame us for being the way we are, its our culture and our very nature to mix everyone together and come out with anything that works. We dont have 1 culture like they do, we have ALL of them... even some of THEIRS!

tl:dr I know, but threads like these really suck!

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAHAHAHAhahaha... oh that was good. Cudos to you sir. Thanks to leaving this gem high up in your post it saved me the effort of reading the rest of what I now assume to be equally uninformed drivel.

Spanish:
Quote:
First language: 329 million
Total Speakers: 500 million.
Hindi:
Quote:
First language: ~ 490 million
Second language: 120–225 million
Mandarin Chinese:
Quote:
First language: 885 million
Total Speakers: 1,365,053,177

And Mandarin is just one of two major languages in China respectively. There are ~1.3 billion people in China, the vast majority of which either speak Mandarin, Cantonese, or both.

I think the main issue is it's quite simply a pain in the *** to use the auto translate for the sake of others. Especially for the JP, it's pretty easy for us, but it takes a lot of extra effort for them.
