Which weapon should I get i'm too stupid to pick!
By benjamus 2026-05-18 12:45:25
Just trade the slip to the Moogle and agonize over what to choose, that's the current best practice (I picked shield)
This is my current state, I traded it when I logged in last year but left it unchosen. I might actually start playing now however, so I gotta pick something.
this thread I think had some useful guidance in it, good luck re-reading all if it :P

Ice brand: best sub nuking weapon for BLU. Best overall nuking weapon for BLU when reforged and most accurate nuking (I mean among weapons with high mab) even as NQ. Good WS offhand when you can't use Thribon (rare). Probably the same for RDM.
Onion Sword: only slashing option for many jobs
Air Knife: I think it's the best offhand when you can't use Centovente and you can melee for TP. It should be especially potent with Prime, because Ruthless has very low WSC 20% DEX/AGI and Dagger has low base damage, so 10%AGI is significant gain (obviously Centovente is way ahead still) for WS, while also being amazing weapon for TP phase (assuming wind damage is not a problem). Highest evasion too.
both GKTs: meh
h2h: Not bad if you dont have Prime. otherwise nope.
axe: meh
gaxe: meh
bow: meh
cheer: very good for main brd, even if you have everything. Great tool to overwrite songs and give ballads for example or in general for SV
scythe: meh
Staff: Reraise V for mules
Chocobo Knife: meh
shield: very good for BST, especially to pair with mythic. Great for WAR zergs I guess with Warcry. Not sure if worth it just for that though. Great for PLD JA swap.
Flametongue: Possibly bis for RDM and BLU WSs, if you cant use Thribon (I havent done any math though, so don't quote me on that :P)
spear: meh
Premium Heart: meh
Save the Queen: Meh
katana: well, wet dreams for Ninja mains. Especially for NIN soloers and especially when you consider planned upgrades to alter egos. Also amazing for offtanking or main tanking, but please don't ask me to find specific scenario, because I won't even try. It can be really used everywhere for that, but is probably never required, but also none ever tried to solve hard fights with that weapon in mind, because it wasn't an option for everyone, so now it might change. Limbus might also bring new use cases for it.
Brave Blade: meh
Wizard's Rod: Worse than Bunzi, but if reforged, it might maybe compete with it.
Gun: meh
This was probably the most coherent summary, good luck pal

The ones that do impactful, unique stuff beyond having nice stats are Katana, Shield and Instrument which make them the three most compelling options imo. I went with the Instrument and I picked it before ever playing any bard really lol, but my group had no bard otherwise and I've played it quite a lot since then. Bard still really wants Daurdabla and Marsyas though so it's not a complete solution but it's a great way to get started and it'll be valuable for a long time.

I am curious a year out;
All the people who picked a weapon do they even use it. Or did they at all. Shield is lovely and the horn is fantastic, they're not weapons.
Especially Melliny, the only one to state they picked air knife.
I know the katana pickers use/used their katanas, though like once every 6 months at best. For silly ***like crystal paradise.
I know one person loves his extra 10 damage nukes on wizrod.
I know a shitload of mules took the chocobo knife to run fast

I picked Dragon Fangs to have access to distortion chains on MNK (Prime stage 4 likely not happening for me anytime soon). I made a proper set + cape for it and I did actually use it...three whole times in the last year. The actual WS is great and by far the most consistent of all H2H WS, but the issue is that it is so low damage for your TP / white damage that it just doesn't compete with other options.
Hindsight 20/20, I absolutely should have got a Firebrand or Ice Brand for my BLU, those would see use often in comparison.

Karambit is leaps and bounds better than dragon fangs, it's a shame
If you could make double darkness with it though......... it might have had some appeal

I still use my wiz rod on two of my characters and the shield on my third. Haven’t replaced em yet.

Shield is by far the most useful.
For weapons I use the RR5 staff all the time. OS3 every now and then but mostly for lol things like CP or Limbus.

My mule used Wizard Rod for better GEO MBs on GEO/DNC (works offhand) and it's quite a bit more than 10 more damage, but isn't +50% either.
On my main, I never picked. Air Knife would be cool for my dagger jobs, but it's not meta in situations where Centovente works and that is the only place I use them. I don't use sword jobs for ice brand/flametongue. I don't really use nuking jobs. I already have BRD RMEAs, so I would be using the horn primarily for pianissimo ballads. Shield is cool for BST and RDM EP for me, but I'm not doing that yet either.
Idk; maybe I'll get inspired some day

as someone that held on to the kupon, it seems like instrument is by and large the best choice right

I know the katana pickers use/used their katanas, though like once every 6 months at best. For silly ***like crystal paradise. Acktually, you don't use Yagyu for Crystal Paradise, because even though San gives 3 shadows to everyone, they can't overwrite it with their own Ni. The key to that fight is maintaining as many shadows as you can, so being stuck at 1~2 and not being able to overwrite is a hindrance.
Yes you can cancel shadows, but then what's the point of the NIN using Yagyu in the first place if you're just going to apply your own.

I was referring to a specific person, without naming them
He was talking about his enjoyment of yagyu in crystal paradise
(same as not naming the wizrod user)
I already know of their testimony, didn't need it to be retold. (in the context of the post, they can of course tell everyone else)

It's the best choice if you play BRD. I have BRD and play it 5 times a year, so longer Ballads and Minnes on the tank is kind of whatever for me.
Obviously if you play NIN, the Katana is just bonkers. There isn't a weapon that compares to it in terms of utility, but NIN is non-meta and does not get involved in much, so it's a toy at best. If you join some Ambu or Seg fights with Newbs, it's great to offhand to help keep people alive. For tanking, it's just busted beyond belief, no tank can hold hate off a NIN with it. But yeah, NIN tanking.
The shield, IMO has amazing appeal, but mostly for a job like BST single wielding instead of being handcuffed to Dual Wield. Being a slower TPer, being able to have longer duration SC windows is nifty. They can also benefit from Haste Samba while single wielding, and longer Killer Instincts (which isn't used on much in modern content, but it's there). Kinda cool option for other buffs like Warcry maybe and Sentinel, otherwise, whatever.
The other weapons are equally seen as toys, so just pick what you want to play with. None of them are game changers unless you play NIN at that level (almost nobody does anymore).

I mean FB2 gives SC options as well as slashing options to jobs that didn't have them before. Utility wise it's up there.
The thread;
Fight to the death about which free mog bonanza weapon you're picking.
Miracle Cheer and Sage's Staves bout to be EVERYWHERE *(on multiboxes, not mains)
IF you get a Miracle Cheer and use Singer, you need to alter the file to add it @ line 253
local extra_song_harp = {
[22249] = 3, -- Miracle Cheer}
Also alter line 109
This line is going to be different based on the gear you have, but around 260.
local dur = 260
