Rumor is disney set up Larson by releasing that footage because they knew how bad her film performance was.

Despite the best efforts of a bad-faith and sexist smear campaign, Captain Marvel — Marvel Studios’ first solo superhero movie about a female superhero — is earning positive critical reviews, and the film is currently projected to make $125 million in its opening weekend.

For months, the film has been targeted by trolls. After its first trailer was released in September, some “fans” of the character photoshopped smiles onto star Brie Larson’s promotional photos — essentially the digital version of the “smile more” catcall — because they thought the actress was stiff and wooden in the role. Larson’s physique was called into question, as part of a debate over whether or not she was strong enough to play a hero who will be one of the strongest Avengers.

In February, as Captain Marvel’s first pre-release screenings were held for press, the movie became the subject of several negative user reviews posted to the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes by people who hadn’t even seen it, blasting Larson’s performance and trashing the movie itself. Although, to call their assessments “reviews” is generous, as they primarily complained about Larson for being sexist against men, expressing anger that seemed to stem from Larson being vocal about the lack of diversity in Hollywood and among film critics. /quote]

Even in some of the good reviews, Larson was panned for being a boring lead character. The movie is going to get money, it's a Marvel movie with a big lead-up to the next Avengers.

Yeah she was just horribly miscast, she's more of a dramatic emotional actor then a Marvel character. All the likable Marvel characters have some quirky humorous aspect to them even in the worst of situations. It's what makes "comic book" stories so enjoyable, some ridiculous nonsensical story with character and style that makes us laugh and smile. Look at Ant Man, or Thor Ragnarok, makes zero sense but the whole audience laughed non-stop. Brie was just too serious, someone like Charlize Theron would of done better.

This is glossing over the fact that it took 3 Thor stand alone movies and 2 Avengers films to finally make a great Thor movie.

Yeah, but the Thor and Avengers movies had honest reviews that allowed them to course correct. Throw in politics and suddenly both sides are creating intellectually dishonest reviews that either pan or praise the movie based on their own personal moral imperative.

If she's really the new face of Marvel due to the old guard being phased out, the franchise needs a much better schtick than, "I'm a woman without a personality, thus making me strong. #GirlzRule!"
