Why should it be this kid's responsibility to account for other people's prejudices?
Common sense, you know. Something people should have, but some people lack.

Something people should have, but some people lack. Love how this is the kids fault for a long chain of stupity. The kid for bringing the case with him, and for not leaving it with his engineering teacher. The engineering teacher's fault for not keeping the clock with him, and for not warning the other teachers of the clock. The teacher who reported him and the school system for going overboard in the whole clock/bomb scenario. The police for not actually investigating the clock itself and for interrogating him based on a prejudice notion that the kid was a terrorist because he was Muslim. To say that this is entirely the fault of one party is being dishonest at best.... You know who I blame for this?
Canada. That's right, I blame Canada. I'm surprised nobody has blamed Texas, except idiots on Facebook and Twitter.

Thats basically what it is, yea. Kid did nothing wrong. Every 'authority/adult' failed massively. Yet hes the one that has to suffer for there paranoia, misconceptions, and ignorance/prejudice. Can't blame Texas, too many guns.
brings back such fond memories of when i was suspended for allegedly threatening to blow my high school up and kill everyone there...
Its both comforting and scarey as hell to know that the stupidity i had to deal with is still alive and thriving for todays kids' Odin.Godofgods said: » Cerberus.Pleebo said: » Quick search brought up this image of the device that's supposedly from the police press conference: ![]() I can see it being mistaken for a bomb given that I have no idea what a bomb would actually look like. Its common sense. For something to be an explosive, then it has to contain explosive materials! There is absolutely nothing inside that thing. Common sense should have solved this issue. That failing, the engineer teacher should have easily been able to tell. That also failing, our over so extensively trained police should have had a clue. And even if alllllll that failed.. a simple bomb tech could have told them. There is no reason to drag a kid out in handcuffs and interrogate them over a clock. The clock display was lit and it wasn't in the briefcase. Just a display, a circuit board, a few components, and some wiring. I CAN'T FIND IT NOW. Among the weird knowledge I have picked up over the years is a considerable bit about explosives. It is possible to make a plastic briefcase* where the plastic parts are an explosive, the lining is C4, and for good measure the metal parts could be magnesium. But it would still need a detonator. *Think Samsonite Asura.Kingnobody said: » .... So, you are admitting that your Wonkette posts are trollbaiting people then? You do realize that's against the rules, right? They are from a source I consider amusing but their slant offends you. Or is it their style? I am sorry for that. (I really thought you would be amused by the salmon splooging on Obama's shoes reposte.) I could have taken the Obama invites clockmaking Muslim kid to to the white house from several other sources but I found the Wonkette one quite amusing just for the headline. Well it looks like he's transferring school as well.
Quote: Two days after his arrest for bringing a homemade clock to school, Ahmed Mohamed appeared at a press conference today to address his supporters. The 14-year-old student at MacArthur High School in Irving, TX, thanked his many fans on social media, who include Mark Zuckerberg, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama, among many others. At his press conference, Ahmed said he planned to take the president up on his offer to visit him at the White House — and said he also plans to transfer to another school. Ahmed looked upbeat during his roughly 6-minute appearance, smiling as he recounted the absurd series of events that led him his arrest. Police have decided not to press charges after determining the clock was not a bomb, as they had originally assumed. But he remains suspended until Thursday for — again — bringing a homemade clock to school. Asked about his other inventions, he said he had previously built a pair of Bluetooth speakers ("but they're gone now; I kind of messed up with them") and said he was currently patenting an invention that harnesses power through neodymium magnets. Ahmed told the crowd he'd like to appear on Shark Tank someday. In the meantime, he says, he plans to help other students who finds themselves in a similar situation. And he encouraged young people to keep working on their inventions. "Don't let people change who you are," he said. "Even if you get consequences for it." Unless it's a private school, no matter where he goes he will be ridiculed for the rest of his primary schooling....

"I got to go to the white house, k thnx bai" I have been to the White House (on a tour), you think I brag about that to my friends? Wish I did it while Bush was president though... It looks so stereotypically like the type of briefcase bomb you see in movies that it's hard for me to imagine someone making it and not realizing that what they're making is deceptive. Not that I think the kid had ill-will in mind, just that he made something that to him was the equivalent of a novelty item that other people didn't think was as funny as I'm sure he did. The situation figuratively and literally blew up in his face and now he's just sticking to the "it was just a clock" story while conveniently avoiding any explanation as to why he intentionally made a clock that looks like a bomb.
He could have just as easily shown up wearing this ![]() and claimed it to be "just my jacket." It just strains credulity Bomb hoaxes are illegal and that's notably what he was arrested for, not for making a clock. I'm siding with the police. The kid needs his head examined if he thought no one was going to think that was a bomb, which I really doubt since he's smart enough to make simple electronic devices. 'Clock Kid' Surfaces as Topic in First Debate
Newser Quote: The Muslim boy who was arrested today because teachers thought his homemade clock was a bomb surfaced as a subject in today's early debate on CNN among the four lower-tiered candidates. Asked about striking a balance between vigilance and discrimination, Bobby Jindal first emphasized that Muslim leaders must denounce terrorism because the US is "in a war with radical Islam." Then, pressed on the discrimination part, he added, "I don't think a 14-year-old boy should ever be arrested for bringing a clock to school." Jindal then pivoted to assert that Christians were facing discrimination, too, and brought up the Kim Davis case in Kentucky, reports the Washington Post. "Let's talk about that." While Jindal and Rick Santorum defended Davis, George Pataki said she would have been fired is she were his employee for violating the law. Santorum wondered how many clerks, florists, etc. would be tossed into jail for defending their religious beliefs, but Pataki wasn't sympathetic, notes the Wall Street Journal. "We’re going to have a president who defies the Supreme Court?” he says. “Then you don’t have a rule of law.” As for Lindsey Graham, he said that while he disagrees with the court's ruling on gay marriage, he said the law must be followed, reports AP. "Kim Davis, I'm not worried about her attacking me," he added. "I am worried about radical Islamic terrorists who are already here planning another 9/11. We're at war, folks. I'm not fighting a crime." Asura.Floppyseconds said: » Yeah, suicide vest is exactly the same. Good point. I was looking for pictures of a novelty dynamite vest and I found that one. It wasn't my intention to imply that he'd wear a real one, or that I think it was a real bomb. The issue here isn't whether or not he brought a bomb to school, though some of you don't seem to understand that. The issue is whether or not this qualifies as a bomb hoax. Neither of us can know what the kid was thinking, but I can make educated guesses. For instance: When was the last time you carried around a suitcase whose sole purpose is telling time? I'm going to guess never. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that no one here has ever or will ever do this unless it's specifically to spite me. I can think of reasons why someone would do it but they all involve scenarios that have no business at school of all places Again, I don't think the kid wanted to scare people. I think he made something that was funny to himself, and then had an "oh ***" moment when he realized he could get into trouble for it, so he's now playing innocent. The alternative to this theory is that people apparently carry around briefcase-sized watches for no particular reason. Missed that memo Ragnarok.Kongming said: » while conveniently avoiding any explanation as to why he intentionally made a clock that looks like a bomb. i think you got that idea backwards. The clock is a clock. Its the real terrorists that make bombs that look like innocent things like a clock or briefcase. on the other hand if having a briefcase is grounds for all of this... we need to send those ppl to wall street
