Seriously. WoW picked up 10x as many subscribers as XI has in total when their most recent xpac dropped.
The numbers aren't even close, nor is SE's ability to adapt and adjust in comparison to user's needs when compared to Blizzard.
Things aren't perfect in WoW, far from it in some instances, but their problems pale in comparison on customer service and development fronts to the messes SE has made for itself. And Bliz does it for something like 30x as many players.

Doomsday trolls been beating the same dead horse since 2006 about the inevitable end of FFXI and now all the forum jackasses are coming out of the woodwork to do the "I told you so!" dance?
You'd have to be a complete idiot to not comprehend that everything comes to an end and ignoring that fact is worthy of a facepalm - but to outright ***on other peoples enjoyment because they still have the capacity to enjoy something that no longer brings you the same level of satisfaction.....

How miserable do you have to be to not only let a video game consume you to a point of epic levels of butthurt even after "quitting/retiring/getting banned" but to also hang around and complain about the same game ad nauseam day in and day out?

Square main issue is they develop a horrible platform in which to develop the game within. Why is there no flying in FFXIV? because their engine is ***. They have to redo a ton of stuff to even allow for it in heavenward. Freedom has always been an issue in FF games.
Look at Dayz Look at Morrowind. Look at World of Warcraft. The most played games in the world are games that allow the utmost of freedom. FF developers are to lazy or to narrow-minded to see this. I don't know the logistics behind developing an engine in which a game is created but I do know that has been a major reason why the masses have stayed away from FF games.

To be fair, JRPGs have always been different from WRPGs, which WoW and The Elder Scrolls are. That's what has always drawn many players to them in the first place. They approach games from a different direction. And you need to keep in mind that these games have never been developed with an English-speaking crowd in mind first. Ever. Their target audience lives on an Island thousands of miles away from any shore of the continental 48.
There are oversights because of this, but clearly they're not fatal oversights, as we still play.
And like any sci-fi/fantasy crowd, we are the most critical of the things we love.*
Edit: *except maybe Browncoats. Firefly/Serenity didn't run long enough to really develop problems...so you just have a bunch of us senselessly, feverishly devoted to 14 episodes and a movie.

So, off the top of my head, I see:
Tenzen, Lion, Maat, Gilgamesh, Star Sibil, Prishe,
Lilisette, Naja, Shantotto, Zeid, Nashmeira, Selh'teus.
I know there is more, just cant tell who. Also, the person in the middle. If you look closely, it looks like she is dressed in garb from the Far East, and the character has a certain fiery look to it. It may be Phoenix.

I think the most amusing thing to come out of this isn't that the game is going to end, but that they sincerely think that a partnership with NEXON is a good idea. To quote their own conference digest "We are pleased to welcome as our partner NEXON, Co., Ltd., a company that boasts a variety of experiences and a world class track record in both developing and operating MMORPGs on mobile platforms."
Good job Squeenix, you're so out of touch that you want to give players an even worse experience including pay to win on your mobile XI game. I envision a cash shop where you can purchase R/M/E, but only for a week or two and then you have to repurchase them because they're only rented.

Naa Mihgo, Selt'eus, Trion, Chebukki (possibly), I see Maat and Iron Eater also.
It's safe to assume (and Byrth kind of alluded to this last night on LS) that this is a sequel to the Trust Initiative, as all of these characters are from the main story and are currently trusts.
I wouldn't be surprised if they molded the whole trust thing with this new add-on. You see all of the characters are surrounding this "person", with a crystal above them. The crystal is significant, because it was the first thing we learned about in ffxi when we started playing (think opening image, crags).
Also, there is a person at the top of the art, a face with half concealed. I remember seeing this character in some ff, but can't remember where.

Or you could spend $20 and purchase a PC copy, hook up a xbox360 or ps3/4 controller to your PC(some drivers required for this one) and go to town.
They never said the Windows client is being discontinued and they never said what was going to happen beyond March 2016, so continue to have your fun with the title, it's not like majority of the player base that you interact with is on those consoles.

Yeah let him go buy a pc copy, only to find out there will be no more updates as stated by se so regardless if he has a pc or a ps2 he ain't getting anymore updates after November, or did you miss that part?

Wild Speculation of what no new "Major" releases means. People are jumping off the cliff but if you look closely its really only those that do not play any longer.
They said nothing about pulling the plug or turning the lights off.

Main thing is the not being able to jump and their reasoning of a 3 inch step makes a reasonable way to stop people from going forward. Elvaan five foot long legs, can't go up a 3 inch step let alone jump over a 1 or 2 foot wall...

I think no one has yet to mention battery issues. Imagine losing your healer in the middle of a BC due to low battery. That is even worse than disconnection.
I can already see shouts like this: <Looking for members> <Veteran> <Battery Charge> <Full attack!>
The mobile version will drain battery so fast and I guess it will be even worse being an online game.

No, but they stated no more updates after November and, the updates until then will bring about the games climax. Servers will stay open with updates to faults etc.
So after November content wise it's done, so if you want to stay around and play after that you can but don't be expecting any updates.
All in all it's pretty much done come November for most people except the die hards.
