Matsui: We would like for all players to be able to complete the final content so we are setting the difficulty rather low. We will only require players to have an item level of 109 to be able to win.
Shout: Final Mission. Veteran player. Augmented Alluvion Skirmish gear and 119 RME only...
That's what people shout for, for page 1-5 groups on very easy, so no doubt.
Is it really coming to an end though? If the install base from smart devices pulls in enough new faces, do you really think SE wouldn't add some new content to the game?
I actually saw this and thought that's exactly what SE was trying to do. They're introducing a new chapter in Vana'diel with Grandmasters, which could generate a lot of buzz about the original FFXI, which just happens to be releasing for the mobile platform after Grandmasters. I doubt they're adding the mobile platform, a platform SE is championing like crazy, just to kill it off. They even refered to it as a "renewed FFXI."
FFXI isn't nearly the game it was upon release. With the story wrapped up by the time of the mobile release, and even more stream lined casual features, how would a FFXI "rerelease" on mobile be any different than players picking up a modern JRPG remake with multiplayer features?
It just seems like SE is aiming to make money off of it by building hype for the "new" 2016 release with a new introductory game, Grandmasters, and putting it on a storefront where more people than ever will see it. Package it as a remaster. Hell MM3D is a remaster and it's probably the fastest selling Zelda game on a platform with 1/20th the install base.

I don't want a prom night event with story NPCs in shape of a fake expansion. I want to mess with the orcs and giants in Rhazowa. I want to witness the matriarchal society and dive into the mysterious Olzhiryan jungles. I want to see the destruction Emptyness caused in the far east and help them rise from their ashes.

JP Only.
We plan to extend service to Japan, Korea, and North America, as well as Europe and the rest of Asia, with an eye toward release in 2016. Be on the lookout for a renewed FINAL FANTASY XI as a massive multiplayer mobile role playing game combining MMOs with mobile devices.

That "JP only" comment you quoted was about the "Grandmasters" spin off, not the mobile version of FFXI.
god damn it your forcing me to subscribe for ffxiv
Yeah um, they can drop as many indirect notes as they want... not subscribing.
At 1st I wanted to cry when I read it was coming to an end, but just *** it. No tears- SE couldn't keep FFXI alive, (which is used to fund FFXIV) then they can't keep FFXIV alive.
Hopefully, at one point or another, Phantasy Star Online 2 will come out for NA release- done with Square Enix's mmos' for awhile after this game ends.
I may have missed something here, but all I'm seeing is:
"Greetings, this is our plan: We will make new content for the game including a new storyline which will end in November of this year. After November no new content will be made and we will mainly work out on balancing the jobs and game after which we will pull our resources off of this game and put them on our new shiny mobile app."
While it isn't a clearcut announcement of the game shutting down, they are pretty much announcing the end of the game.

Well he did a terrible job of making that point by quoting me on FFXI 2016 and not realizing snark doesn't translate as well over text.
You really expect a reasonable port of FFXI to mobile devices? Any attempt to do so will be for the JP version, since it's pretty obvious that it's the JP version they care about.
The game is getting a real ending. And content. We never even expected Adoulin to happen. I'm totally fine with this. I'll miss it I am sure, but that is okay.
When I started playing this game I was just a dumb teenager in high school. Now I'm a grown *** man with real world problems and a family. Think about other MMOs. None of them last like FFXI has. And the game isn't even really over. We've still got 2-3 years.
You know what I just realised? The new addons will still have PS2 limitations lol, they're being released before they drop PS2 support.
Thats why part of me is wondering if there will be more stuff in the future if the mobile stuff does well. Dropping PS2 and 360 after the final scenerios so give everybody some sort of closure. They say they will be focusing on the computer version. If it opens up resources, we can always hope.

By 2016 I'd hope we'd be able to make our magic pocket computers competently run software made for a console that was made 16 years ago.
Also, why are you separating the JP version? You're worried about them doing a shoddy port but you think they'd design different apps for each region instead of just localing the "JP version"? Am I missing something, or is the mobile version not compatible with the PC version?
I just hope this last chapter will be downloadable for all platforms. Being cut out of Adoulin for Xbox in Europe once they finished the discs they had made for the European market was one of the most inconsiderate things SE could ever do.

Maybe they can bump the fps limit while also updating the animations to match the new limit and pull out an hd texture patch. It all depends on the success of the mobile version and how much longer they want the cash cow alive.
Considering the spaghetti code though, they will most probably never bother doing any drastic improvements to the engine itself at this point. For every change they make, they would also need to make sure it would work with the mobile version...
If you ask me, they are about to build an ever bigger mess of spaghetti code. I highly doubt they can manage both versions properly. Maybe they will just drop PC service too if the mobile version lives up to their expectations.

Yeah it sounds like after this year they'll be going from the relative skeleton crew we have now to a single femur sitting somewhere doing occasional tweaks and making sure the servers stay plugged in. How long will that last? Only the holdouts can decide!
Because it will no doubt be buried in the big discussion post, I am putting the link to the official translated summary here for quicker and easier access.
