Yeah I was pretty upset when I found out Aeris' L4 Limit Break was only accessible on the first disk and I obviously missed it. I was one of those people who actually tried to play the game w/o a guide. But honestly, you can't obtain "everything" without one.

Ruby Weapon is Time Consuming, yet easy if you know the trick.

Trick 1: Enter with two party members dead. He'll immediately stick the tentacles in the ground and become vulnerable. Revive them quick, however you like.

Trick 2: For emergencies, Final-Attack==Phoenix is always a good idea, 3+stars on each.

Trick 3: You'll want a Mime for each party member--all three. Don't worry about mastering the third, it doesn't matter.

Trick 4: You need Hades at least at 2 stars, and KOTR at least at 2 stars (you really only need one, but for emergencies, a second is always good).

Now to kill him.

Enter, Revive your party fast, then cast W-Summon> Hades THEN KOTR. Hades FIRST.

Why? Ruby is MASSIVELY VUNERABLE to Hades. It will put him in Stop 100% of the time. Then, the second summon, KOTR, will NOT be countered by Ultima.

Step 2? WAIT. Select Mime on any character, just don't confirm it. As SOON as Ruby starts to wiggle, hit the button fast. Your attack should go off, and stop him again, then KOTR will blast the literal schnit out of him.

Why wait? Well, There is a chance, if you mime immediately, that his stop will wear off just before the end of the KOTR animation. If this happens, you get Ultimaed.

If by chance you do get blasted, don't worry, kill two people, let him make himself vulnerable again, and repeat. Usually takes 8-12 KOTRs, depending on your level and paired materias to the summons.

Just remember, if stop wears off while the KOTR animation is going, you will get blasted by Ultima.

Materias were a very good combat system. You could create some synergies that were in fact needed to beat some monster. I was disapointed when in ffviii they invented that junction stuff, with magics like items.

But mastering materias was a ffxi-like grinding. I remember beating emerald weapon and spending some hours to create some extras KotR to beat ruby, but i think i just gave up at some point. If i ever find stomach to redo all that materia grinding, i guess i will try ruby, as it was the last thing left to do for me.

One thing I always did was that I used the armor that has the highest magic evasion, which is the Mystile. It has 60% magic evasion, but there is only 2 of those, so the third person has to wear an Aegis Armlet, which has 50% magic evasion. It's not fool proof, but the evasion helps a lot to avoid the magic attacks.

Along with KoTR, final attack with Phoenix, mime, etc, just keep miming KoTR, and revive and heal when necessary. I've done it in the past, and it's not too difficult if you know what you are doing.

Nah, that's ruby. Emerald's major attack is "Aire Tam Storm" which does more damage the more materia you have equipped.

its been a decade or so since i last fought him, but iir i used Elememtal+fire combo and Elemental+ultima combo (mastered) on the aromor. Absorb fire atks and absorb his ultima counter from kotr

Been too long since I got that far in the game, I usually start and get bored anymore (or rather side tracked).

I have a save on my PSP I should continue though.
