The human element is almost always close to center stage of the older movies. I went in expecting back story and set up.
All in all, I give it a 9.5/10 The roar was off. It needs to have a slightly higher pitch imo.

Like one of the above poster said, I dont know if some of the complainers actually saw the old movies. If you want a non stop thrill ride, watch Cap 'Murica 2.

The issue is that the human focus was so half-assed and cliché that it only felt like a massive waste of time. Yes, it worked in the old Godzilla movies but, just like the actual appearance/production of Godzilla, the bar has been raised. Saying that "it has always been that way" is not a good excuse.
If you're going to spend so much of the movie focusing on the human elements you need to do a better job of making people care about those things. Lynx you are totally right, I mixed up my childhood experience. Sorry about that.
The set up seemed fine to me. Based on the trend of current movies, the darker tone was present. I was genuinely concerned about the mother-father-son relationship and the sons family. Its just something I have come to expect from the series. It just made sense to me how it all tied together. I wouldn't have minded it if it was a good story. I did love his roar! I really would have loved to have seen this in an Atmos Theater! That would have been the ***for the sound effects! Basically Godzilla in a nutshell.

Not saying Pacific Rim is a good movie, but it is so bad it has a bit of fun factor to watching it. Basically everyone has said what I felt. While I don't mind a human factor, I just didn't give two shits about the main character or his family. Also the whole plot revolving around "Godzilla is trying to kill these things because... just because he feels they need to die?" fell short in my opinion. Pretty sure he never had much of a reason to fight other monsters in the older films either.
Also, the franchise has had far more boring human focus characters before too, both of the "godzilla vs mothra films" come to mind. I actually have enjoyed all the Godzilla movies (except for the one with Ferris Bueller in it)
This new one I don't really count as a Godzilla movie but I hope it will still be good. I thought it was a brilliant movie. Good action, nice suspense, and you could actually give a rats *** about the humans in the movie. I do agree that the main character was a bit goofy, but I guess it's a nice contrast to the pure awesomeness which was Godzilla him/herself.
I'd give it an 8/10 From who I believe is a great representative of the franchises history.
If and when a sequel is done, I think the most interesting thing moving forward is how they will tie together the human element. Anyone could just throw a bunch of fight scenes in there and call it a movie, the way the film was done was tasteful. I stand by my score of 9.5/10 |
