XI's issue was XIV which siphoned resources post-AU (the high point of XI), forced the game into an ice age of WOTG-era slog, abandonment and content so bad it was like watching children walk into a woodchipper in hindsight. Yilbegan, Fay Augments, the abandoned Moblin Maze Mongers, Sandworm 5hr camps, Dark Spookion, Fiat Lux et al.

After XIV bombed SE attempted to right the ship with Abyssea and post-Abyssea handouts to prevent both games from going down and what we see now with Seekers and all its (good) adjustments should have followed TOAU which would have led to an overall stronger game. ilvls aside, XI has grown more through updates and Matsui generally seems to give a ***about the game but it's too bad Tanaka left him a half-eaten corpse.

Imagine if Monstrosity had been something we got around WOTG launch. Yeah man... that'd have been *** great.

They could even have made a link between Monstrosity and Pankration if they really wanted. So much possibilities with FFXI.

What kills me the most when I see FFXI nowadays is this kind of thing (to add to a previous post):

http://www.ffxiah.com/item/28389/agitators-collar

I don't know what this kind of item is worth in nowadays FFXI but back when I used to maximize all my sets on PLD and SAM, this would have been a ***tier item right away.

I don't understand the point of adding items that are inferior to existing, easy to obtain items. When would you ever use that neck over a DD neck where Twilight isn't the alternative? Why introduce a dozen MAB earrings that are inferior to one from 75 cap? I don't see why people should be encouraged to bypass some of the best content in the game with rewards that are either on par or much worse than the existing pieces. Such a waste of coding and dev time.

That necklace is actually great for hybrid TP sets.

Hybrid sets where 8 accuracy outweighs 1PDT/5MDT/5BDT? It effectively robs those stats out of other slots and limits other choices where you could make up more accuracy easily. It also has only 6 jobs on it, so it's inventory -1.

FFXI's main issue when it comes to keeping its playerbase is the fact that it has changed way too much.

I actually have to agree with this statement. When you go from a slower paced, more in depth game with side grade equipment to a game where it's just vertical progression, it loses the allure it once had with the players who wanted to "fine-tune" their characters.

That was the great thing about FFXI, most of the time not one set could be deemed greater than the others. Different combinations of gear could be more useful than others. It brought a sense of originality and customization that no other games offered with straight vertical progression.

The reasons why people won't play it anymore differ from person to person.. mine was just I didn't have enough time for it anymore to stay on several hours a day.

Uh have you even been playing lately? There are tons of Side grades, look at New skirmish gear and relic. Some people are just misguided.

......n..o...?

I'm going by what I've heard from others about the current state of the game, so I'm sorry if I'm not as up to date about it like others are.

I said hybrid TP set. Accuracy is EXTREMELY relevant right now.

Hybrid is a new concept brought with Legion I believe (Mul specifically if I remember correctly), so the item may not be ***now, I just liked the game better when it was about being able to switch stuff efficiently rather than wearing something that multitasks. Back when this kind of item was ***.

>said people claim that you have to be smart, so you have to use hybrid
>shitters gonna ***

Not gonna lie, this is what gave birth to the hybrid sets in the first place. Then, much later, it became simply much more efficient to run hybrid sets and even then, at first, it was only a few fights. Now I guess it has become more of a general use, but I'll never forget that this was born from laziness and people being ***rather than efficiency.

No more Christmas trees.

If the servers shutdown for good..? Hmm... Hahaha

The bathtub represents FFXI.
The buckets of water represent your time.
Edit: I'm going with Tom Hanks on this one, but you can identify with Shelly Long if that's more fitting.

On a more serious note. It would be a shame to see it go, if only for one reason. The game has a great story, and that's the only thing it has above other games.

Clever boss mechanics? No.
Interactive environments? Not really.
Unique gameplay? Eh... maybe?
Story? Check.

I left for almost 8 months, right before SoA release, and just came back at the beginning of November. I'm horrifically behind, and worst of all I'm gearing of all jobs my RDM...and even worse than that I'm gearing solo melee RDM! Dear lord what am I thinking...I was a respectable linkshell member before and 7 year veteran of sky, sea, HNM, ToAU, Einherjar, pretty much everything except Legion. I did my dutiful job of having my mage jobs geared/merited and a decent RNG with archery and marksmanship capped and merited. Merited WS? check. Gandiva and plans set to work on Anni? yup. Empy+2, plenty of other relevant gear and logical merits? you know it.

But now, here I am stabbing ***. Not doing group events (yet- my good friends who know better keep bugging me to come along- I will, I will, I just have to work up the guts to show my face in my mix of RoE and oldie gear in public!) But loving it. And looking forward to "moving forward".

-I agree, the game has changed so much. I think that's what's hard for so many of us 5+ year veterans when we look at it now, which is what makes us jaded for subjects like this. We may hate the days of fighting for pops and ridiculous droprates waiting in line for W. Legs and Haidates, or god forbid E.bodies. But on the other hand, those moments gave us such a connection to our characters that seeing the change of how gear progression works makes it hurt so much.

Makes our days from back then mean so little.

Makes those exp party days in LoO on Coeurls dinging into your AF mean jack *** (who here remembers those days?).

Makes zoning into Sky at 4AM with the party you did the last 6 hours worth of missions with because you just couldn't stand stopping "this close" seem like pittance.

Yeah, the item wait pissed us off at the time. And looking back it didn't "build character". We don't want to become the old guy saying he walked uphill both ways to school through 3 feet of snow. But the reason we feel this way is because it gave us so much ownership of our characters.

ahh such a rant....

What would I do if the servers shut down?

Same thing I did the day I thought would be my last. Go to waterfall in Miseraux, don my AF (or now a mixture of Atrohpy/Warlock's), whip out the joytoy/genbu's, and log off. Or, if they're shutting them down, maybe leave myself logged on until the connection is lost, while slowly dropping my rare/ex gear, pretending they're falling into the water.

the question, what you'll do next ?

I'll move to XIV and will be watching many XI videos for a very long time, specially the old ones :')

I'm sure someone still playing the day the servers are shutting down is also someone who has already migrated to one of the various FFXId servers, or perhaps even created their own. There's no stopping an addict, especially with plentiful options still available.
