The tech hipsters have driven all the hippies to Oakland.
I wish I could live in Oakland, but there isn't a shuttle there (which is a lot of why it's cheaper to live there). Also, I'd need a car and I am planning to shed that during the move.
I've never had to move cross country suddenly, though. I'm feeling absolutely lost ;-;

Quote: Also, sorry to hear your cost of living just tripled.
It's not quite so bad since I'll no longer have a car payment (-$300/month), car insurance (-$150/month), or suburban commute gas expenses (-$150/month) although the latter will be somewhat converted to public transportation fees, but transit in SF is surprisingly cheap and I'll be using the free shuttles to get to work in Menlo Park.
Still. Paying a West coast first month's rent + security deposit on an East coast salary sucks. Oh, and some places want the last month's rent too! Yeah no lol!! Why not rent in the suburbs, drive (or walk) to the nearest station, and hitch a ride that way?
Sure, it will take a longer time to commute to work, but you will save just as much time from waiting in traffic and paying parking fees for the entire month and such.

I accidentally got a job in San Fransisco last week and now I have to move out there by the 10th of February. How the *** do people find apartments in the city?
My summary of the experience thus far is as follows:
"hi i have space in my freezer for rent, you pay $2k/mo with $2k deposit up front but you will have to be chopped up to fit in there."
Seriously I had a group of three people offer me space in their studio apartment for $700. Yeah no. Living in the city is going to cost you a ton, there really is no way around that.
Are you planning to get a car again or really trying to stick with not owning a car and just use the bus and live in the main city area?

I actually hate driving (I have no depth perception, so urban driving especially is horrifying for me).

The only reason I would want to move to San Fran is for the beer. Not even kidding.
My political and cultural viewpoint doesn't gel well with most of the people. I would see a lot of heated arguments and no friends. lol

The only reason I would want to move to San Fran is for the beer. Not even kidding. I wouldn't move to San Francisco at all. Have you seen the tax rates there?
I would literally pay almost 90% of my income just on taxes alone! No thanks!

I looked into living outside the city but the lack of shuttles in the suburbs and the car requirement ends up cancelling out the savings. At one point I think there were plans to expand the Silicon Valley tech shuttles to the rest of the Bay Area, but I think the recent backlash against the G-bus and stuff are going to can that idea.

Thats unfortunate about the driving, when I lived in SF for several years I lived in a few different nearby areas (Sausalito/Half Moon Bay/Redwood City) and only went to SF downtown for partys/weekends. That required a car though.
I don't even know what the inner city is like these days for rentals, i'm sure Castro/Haight Ashbury area is still popular and going to cost you alot.
Its kind of unfortunate that the job doesn't assign+pay for a relocation service to help you find a place and get settled in on such short notice.
Even for someone that's lived in SF before, given 2 weeks to move would be awkward and rushed. Just avoid getting sucked into some terrible longterm lease so you can look for something better while you start your job and get settled.

The only reason I would want to move to San Fran is for the beer. Not even kidding. Yes the microbrewery places are pretty awesome. I miss going to Marin Brewing Co. now :(
If I ever move back to SF i'd live in Marin county area again.

I looked into living outside the city but the lack of shuttles in the suburbs and the car requirement ends up cancelling out the savings. Well, you did what I think most people should do but don't. Good for you for doing research and making your decision based on that research!

San Antonio has a USAA bus through VIA. I believe they also have a Toyota and a Valero bus to. It is to be convenient to the employees. What's wrong with that?

The BART is a great distance extender, makes living in the east bay and commuting fairly easy. Weather is better in the east bay too.
As to rental prices, SF is EXPENSIVE, the rentals convenient to the BART merely pricy. Then again you get way more square footage for less money out of the city.
Avoid rental agencies with up front fees.

People were upset about the tech shuttles in San Fransisco because they were being used as a scapegoat for rising real estate prices and gentrification in the city. Liberal hippies being pissed off that they can't get real jobs and afford their rent, basically!

I find online interaction in forums or in games on a smaller scale much more satisfying.
In general i'm kinda sad that everyone in this world is ignoring each other and looking at their phone and twittering/fb'ing. People have forgotten how to socialize in person and instead opt for the safety buffer of only doing it through some kind of 'social media' conduit.

I agree with this. I have Facebook just for a few friends that I don't see that often. I check in maybe once a week to see if anything exciting is happening. And I'm disappointed every week.

What's the biggest drink or most alcohol you've ever poured for yourself?
Bonus question: why?

I bought a pint of 100 proof peppermint schnoppes to drink one night. We were having a drinking night in the ls on XI and I decided to go with it.
I got sick, almost crushed my dog, and had a hangover the next day.
Come to find out, I was supposed to work because the boss decided I wasn't a "manager" and was just a regular employee, so my name was at the complete bottom of the work list and I didn't see it.
I never went in. Put my name in the right spot next time. D:

The last time I drank peppermint schnapps the night did not end well for me either. I almost go arrested. lol
For an entire summer I spent every weekend drinking copious amounts of booze. Might have been the best summer of my life. Then my friend got married and that ended it sadly.

Gallon is 128 ounces. It's exactly 1/16th of a Canadian.

Do you have Facebook ? And if so why and how do you feel about it ? Feel free to rant or rave.
I have Facebook because it seemed like a good way to keep in touch with my friends and family.
I like it because it lets me see what's up with everyone without having to talk to anyone. Also, I can host photos there and allow them to either be shared with friends or completely private (or well, besides the FB employees and the NSA and whoever else) which eliminates my need for any sort of Photobucket site (or whatever photo hosting sites the kids are using these days.)
I dislike it because the more I know about my friends and family, the less I like them (in general.) I liked my family better before they spammed my newsfeed with political and religious pictures and outrageously pious updates. In fact, I unsubscribed from the update statuses of most of the people that I joined Facebook to keep in touch with to begin with. Ehhhh.
And honestly, I'm sure they feel the same about me. I hate it when others spam my newsfeed with pictures of their baby that was born ten minutes ago and looks like a hairless rat. They hate it when I spam the newsfeed with pictures of my dogs, who are obviously the most adorable creatures ever to walk the planet and everyone must see them. LOOK AT MY DOG IT IS THE BEST DOG THAT EVER DID DOG. But get that gross kid out of my face!
See the problem? :/ But then we all have to act like we adore each other anyways because adulthood and maturity.
Facebook. I like it. I don't like it.
Twitter, on the other hand. I am so confused about Twitter. So, I made a Twitter account so that I could nonchalantly stalk famous people who don't know that I exist. But what on earth am I supposed to DO with it? I think I made two or three tweets, and then I was like "Well this is really awkward I'm just going to keep lurking." And then I forgot to lurk, and it hurts Twitter's feelings so they send me emails all "Liela! Wait! We can find you friends here! Honest we can! Look, Ray Narvaez Jr retweeted a photo that is a joke you don't get from people you don't know! This must fascinate you because you are currently stalking Ray Narvaez Jr! It MUST!" And I'm all "That's nice Twitter, but I don't really care actually." And then I feel like a monster for breaking Twitter's heart.
Twitter. I don't know what I am supposed to be doing with Twitter.

And just like that, Liels has found her new home.
Hi. I always have questions that I am too shy to ask or don't know who to ask.
I was thinking that the semi-anonymity of this site + the relatively broad audience will give me a decent mix of people (where i'll probably get a good answer).
It's also not ffxi related, nor do i want these questions to get lost in the sea that is RT/NI.
Anyhow:
1) I get slightly dry hands every winter. The nature of my job requires that i occ have to wash grease from my hands. That + the weather dries them out.
The GOOD hand creams leave residue on my hands > My ADD kicks in > I wash hands > hands further dried out.
Anyhow, I want something that won't leave my hands all greased/wet, but also actually works. I was looking at this based on several online googles etc:
Thoughts?
2) My jeans are too tight in the thigh but baggy at the waist. If i go up waist size and just belt the shit out of them they're uncomfortable because of baggy. Men's jeans only come with waist and inseam but not leg size. What cuts are gonna have different leg sizes? What do i look for when I want "i've ever been in a gym and i'm not michael cera" jeans? As much as I love it the attention my female character gets, crying on the bed trying to force on jeans before school is thankfully something my gender never had to deal with. (I mean that with love ladies. Please dont crucify me).
3) Are tomatoes the best vegetable/fruit ever? If no, how do you sleep at night?
