Do we call them "underpants" because we wear them "under" our "pants" or because they are "pants" that we wear "under" our other clothes?

We sometimes use the words "underpants" and "underwear" interchangeably, but is it proper to relegate "underwear" to the designation of only one kind of garment while its cousin "outerwear" refers to many different kinds?

Yes. I think underwear makes more sense. Because what if I'm wearing shorts.

If a tree falls in the forest how many times will Geico make a commercial about it ?

Also kudos to Ash for creating an interesting thread.

Serious question: What do you talk about on a first date ?

The effectiveness of Thundershirts are unverified, but Dante hates having sweaters on so it would more likely make him even madder. I'd rather not resort to medication unless I have to.

So! Dog people! How do you soothe a nervous dog when you can't control the source of their stress? How do you make going out in the rain to pee comfortable when rain is stressful to them?
The problem with attempting to sooth or calm an anxious dog is they often see that as positive reinforcement. Being on a leash will often help. Taking their mind off it by going through a well practiced training routine sometimes works.

There are anti anxiety meds....

And how about a raincoat? They go on much differently than a sweater.

There are many kinds of underwear. Long johns and bras are underwear too. Well... maybe bras not that much anymore.

What do you talk about on a first date ?

I'd say basics. What kind of music do you like? What's your favorite movie? What book are you reading right now? (Don't ask what their favorite book is, it's too easy to spout one off that they've never read and recite the wiki notes to you. Unless you trust them off the bat.) You want to just get a basic feel of who this person is. What was their favorite class in high school? Why did they like it? What was their least favorite? Why didn't they like it? Of course, it's easy for all that to come across sounding like some sort of job interview, so really just let the conversation flow to wherever it flows.

Second date is for a slightly deeper dig. What are their hopes and dreams? Where do they want to be in five years? Ten?

Save the weird family histories and possible deal-breakers for the third date. She doesn't need to know that your crazy Uncle George is in prison for the eighth time right away.

And save future-us talk for when you have a deeper and more serious relationship. If you start asking how many of your kids she'd be willing to bear on the first date, you might kinda scare her off. Then again, don't wait so long for that talk that you are already planning out a wedding date to the lady. You don't want to find out after you are completely in love that you hate children and she wants 82 of them.

Honestly though, I'd worry less about conversations for the first couple of dates and more about just having fun and seeing if there's a good spark there.

Pretty good advice. The thing that would send me running is any talk of marriage or babies too soon. My friend introduced me to some women a few weeks ago (not a date) I probably should have been more sober. lol The women were nice but I wasn't really attracted to them. More of a friend thing.

I'd say no. But I'm a light breakfast person.(toast pop tarts etc) Coffee gets me through most of the day.

Sushi is good any time of the day! :D

But that just might be because I've been craving tuna for two days. xD

No clue. I'm not well versed in the sushi arts. Maybe a bagel and tuna ?

Or this:

I've never had "real" sushi only the fake kind without raw fish.

I might have not sure it has been a while.

I'm still up in the air about the concept, but I have classes every week early Wednesday morning and all my coworkers have signed up for bringing breakfast food; my day's coming up. Anyway, here's what I was thinking. Instead of using the nori sheet, I was thinking of trying to make one of Epic Mealtime's bacon weave and using that to wrap it up. I'd still use sushi rice, but I'm not sure if that's set in stone yet. I'd need something that is sticky and just as pliable as the stuff. Anyway, I'd precook some eggs in omelet form, then cut them into thin strips. I'd also get some breakfast sausage and maybe some avocado or something. Then, after wrapping it, I was thinking of using hollandaise or maple syrup as a dipping sauce.

Also, for a version of nigiri-zushi, I was thinking of getting just cake doughnuts, cutting them into bite-sized pieces, then covering the top of each with a chunk of bacon with some frosting underneath to make sure it sticks to the doughnut.

Just a couple ideas so far.

How do you know when someone's really accepted an apology? I'm guessing you just play it by ear, and then if they have forgiven you, then they'll only bring it up in a lighthearted fashion here or there. Reason I ask is, is that most all my friends I've ever had have had a spat/fight/argument with me at one point or another. Most of them always bring up old things I've done if they want to "win" the next one or "teach" me a lesson.

Traveling along these grey lines of people... How can you tell if someone is holding a grudge or ignoring you? If someone is ignoring you, is there a way to get them to stop ignoring you? I don't know, I guess my questions are a bit silly.

Who else likes Stouffer's Fettuccini Alfredo? It's so yummy.

To me a friend wouldn't try to "win" and would look past things that happened in the past. Everyone does ***they shouldn't and they should move on. My one friend holds onto grudges that happened like 20 years ago. At some point you have to get beyond that stuff (if it is a serious issue) Maybe I'm more forgiving than most people though.

This first one sounds kinda messy. What I would do is reverse the order and replace the nori with a thin omelet, then wrap the bacon/rice with it. I would use plain rice instead of sushi rice since the vinegar is meant to 'kill' the fishy taste, or you could put fried rice in it. For the bacon I'd cook it so it's cooked but not crunchy so the texture blends with the rest of the ingredients. As for the sauce, ketchup or siracha? idk.

Your second one reminds me of a maple bacon donut...

That's good too. Going from topic to topic holds interest better than just droning on about your childhood or something. And intelligence is a big necessity (at least for me) so being moderately well knowledgeable in a variety of topics would be a plus.

D: If your friends think it's ok to dredge up old stuff in order to teach you a lesson, then they might not be the kind of friends you want to tell your deepest secrets to. Be careful!

They aren't silly at all! I'd say you can't live your life for someone else. If you've apologized and they are holding a grudge, just go live your life and let them catch up later. Ditto if they are ignoring you. You can't just wait around playing someone else's game, and them expecting you to play games to make them not ignore you comes across as attention whoring and/or princessing on their part and enabling on your part. (No, princessing is not a word. But you know what I mean! Trying to make someone else cater to them or do ridiculous things to please them is princesseing, for lack of a better word on my part.)

Say you are sorry (if you've anything to apologize for) and then forget it and move on. The ball is in their court, and if they drop it, it's their problem. When they see that you have moved on from it and let it go, then they have a choice. They can either be bitter and hold a grudge, or they can let it go and catch up to you. Either way, it's not your issue at that point.

Serious question: What do you talk about on a first date ?

Not discounting anything Liela said, but i wanted to throw some male perspective here:

I'm assuming you're the girl here? If you are, try to be comfortable. If he's in to you, and you guys have chemistry, it'll all work out and he won't be upset later (ie - you take off the "mask" and suddenly you're not the "girl he fell in love with").

As a guy, I typically will try to keep my answers relatively short on a first date. I don't want to rant and tangent (like i do on here), but I also don't wanna appear boring and let the conversation stagnate. I can tell if a girl has similar interests to me, and if we really hit it off the conversation will occur naturally before i know it.

tl;dr: obviously you're going to have to find something to talk about but never try to "put on" too much. Just be natural. You say interesting enough ***on here so i'm sure you'll be fine.

-edit- i probably shouldn't have assumed lol. I just know most guys are usually too proud to ask something like that XD

I accidentally got a job in San Fransisco last week and now I have to move out there by the 10th of February. How the *** do people find apartments in the city?

My summary of the experience thus far is as follows:

"hi i have space in my freezer for rent, you pay $2k/mo with $2k deposit up front but you will have to be chopped up to fit in there."

Seriously I had a group of three people offer me space in their studio apartment for $700. Yeah no.

i was raised by a single mom so she'd come back from dates sometimes upset that the "guy only wanted to talk about himself", or "didn't seem like he was interested in me". If it's working she'll say "so what about you" or "let's hear your side" etc.

My 2 cousins work out there. One is a software dev and another runs a "dev boot-camp". Don't be afraid to ask HR for recommendations on living arrangements if it's a computer tech field. From my understanding the companies go up and go down so fast they're used to bouncing people back and forth between san-fran / san-diego to new industries.

Also, sorry to hear your cost of living just tripled.

The cost of living in San Fran is really high. I've read some stories about how difficult it is to live there.

It's not quite so bad since I'll no longer have a car payment (-$300/month), car insurance (-$150/month), or suburban commute gas expenses (-$150/month) although the latter will be somewhat converted to public transportation fees, but transit in SF is surprisingly cheap and I'll be using the free shuttles to get to work in Menlo Park.

Still. Paying a West coast first month's rent + security deposit on an East coast salary sucks. Oh, and some places want the last month's rent too! Yeah no lol!!
