I'm replaying FFV and the last time I played it, I was 12 or 13 years old, so I don't remember ***about it (and I probably sucked at it, too).

With the job system, I notice you get one ability you're stuck with for having the job and the ability to equip another.

My question is that with the equipped ability, do you automatically get the abilities from your job (such as learning blue magic, knight's two-handed) or do you have to have that equipped even if you're on the job?

You have to equip the second skill, and can be a previously learned skill from a different job

Since I always play the hell out of BLU for FF5, I can tell you that you can learn spells and use them without setting the learned abilities.

Edit later:

When I think about it, I believe there are a few select abilities that you don't automatically get for being a job.

Some abilities are used innately by the jobs, such as
!White and the White Mage. You can use these abilities when you change to
another job. Other abilities aren't used automatically, like the Knight's
Two-Handed, and must be equipped to use.(Taken from gamefaqs)

Yeah when you play a job it automatically has all of the abilities you've learned associated with that job. Additionally, when you master a job all of it's passive abilities (learning, hp +10%, etc) are automatically considered equipped when you play mimic and I believe when you play onion knight as well.

Is there a list of which ones are automatic and which aren't then? Because that's confusing as ***

All the ones that are 'job traits' are passed on:

Artful Dodger
Dual Wield
HP+10%-HP+30%
MP+10%-MP+30%
Blade Catch
Learning
Brawler

etc

What I mean are ones that I'm actually using as the job.

Like Knight learns 2-handed. Do I actually have to equip it (as Knight) to get it, or is that only for when I want to use that passive on another job?

You only have to equip it if you're not currently Knight.

2handed isnt an auto trait, like Berserk. It needs to be set, even as Knight. Knights don't have native 2handed at level 1 but Dual Wield is automatically on Ninjas even at level 1 although not learned until like level 6.

Most of the job skills you learn are more set to the freelancer and mimic job but freelancer gets all the passive abilities for other jobs you got to set second skill

Important thing to note certain traits do become auto equipped on the jobless class when mastered such as dual wield, not to mention jobless class gains stat boosts to make it similar to the mastered class. That is to say jobless doesn't need to equip dual wield once ninja is mastered to take advantage of dual wielding.

Makes the Jobless class pretty powerful later on, but yeah most of the passive abilities need to be equipped for them to work unless specifically stated to be a part of the class such as thief's ability to see hidden passages and geo's ability to see traps.

So yeah some passives are auto active where as others have to be equiped... best to jump on game faq's to figure out which is which.

P.S. one of the more broken combos is jobless mastered ninja with mystic knight/paladin's sword magic and hunter's x-fight ability, equipped with two sword magic compatible weapons. depending on the translation/version you are playing ability names may vary.

http://ffvspirit.com/ is a great resource for all this stuff (I'm playing FFV too since I sold my account!)

And yea, each job has innate abilities (if you have a THF in your party you will always have Flee and Hidden Passages, BLM can cast all BlackX-tier spells) but some things must be unlocked even on that job (first thing that comes to mind is stupid Doublecast for RDM, which costs 999 ABP...)

On a related note, I always recommend starting the game as Monkx4, switching to a THF/BLU party to learn some spells and unlock Flee, and then keeping at least 2 RDM until your mage characters learn Doublecast. Fortunately, RDM with an elemental stave is overpowered until like, World 3 iirc. Also, don't grind xp until you have BST unlocked, as in World 2 you can enter to Sealed Castle and charm Shield Dragons for 10k XP and 5 ABP per fight (use Ninja main, Control sub, and make the Shield Dragon cast Blaze on itself until it's dead).

This should help http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Freelancer_(Final_Fantasy_V)

It has a list of the innate abilities you will inherit and what you won't. The other passive abilities must be equipped to be used even by the job it is learnt on IIRC e.g. Knight must equip 2 handed for it to be effective.

Just faced Ifrit and I realized I haven't really used any magic all this time. Whm(Lenna) has healing staff so I just melee my pt w/ that. Faris/Bartz are on DD jobs. Galuf is on smn lol but I have him with bare fisted and punching does good dmg w/o costing any mp.

i replayed this not too long ago, Any job ability/traits you learn can be used on any job. Most jobs you get forced to use attack/XXXmagic/whatever attack. But For Freelancer(or bare if its PS1 or SNES.) and Mime all traits become active regardless weather u equip them or not and u can equip any 4 abilitys on Freelancer and any 3 on mime cause they are stuck with mimic. so the more jobs u master the stronger Freelancer/Mime become.

Was never a fan of mime's they overall had lower stats and there weren't too many combos that required you to have 3 abilities open.
