[Dev] Software Token Smartphone App
Unless they offer even more storage for this then count me out, I have no probs with the little token on my desk and no desire to complicate things.
This would be nice since I occasionally like to log in on my laptop but I'm too paranoid to bring my token with me since it will likely get lost or left in my jeans and get washed...
But I'm curious, can you have both the app and the token? It'd be lovely for a fail over too, I mean the token has to run out of batteries at some point and being able to use both would be nice. You can utilize both in other games that use tokens and apps so I figure SE is just copying that particular model and would allow the usage of both.
I'm super paranoid about the token and always forget to grab it off my desk for when I log on from my laptop so count me in! i fully expect se to be like the first developer to charge money for an authenticator app

They'd be absolutely braindead to make this in any way an expense or hassle for the end user since this benefits them as much as it does us.
Of course, this is SE. They have extreme difficulty with anything beyond developing a standalone game and packaging it for retail sale. Peeps will pay and they know it heck I paid just for the satchel f the token give me 80 more spaces and I would pay again lol....

I remember when the token came out, everyone I knew was buying it for the storage, not the account security

I just got my token today, when would I be able to access my Satchel? I registered it, logged out, logged back in and 30 mins later still don't have access, any insight would be appreciated :D
I remember it taking a little while to kick in, couple hours at most?
Mmmk, Thanks Yimoa, Long time no see! ^^/

More than doable for someone with nation-state support; especially those on the upper tech level. Blizzard's encryption protocol was vulnerable recently for their mobile app too. It wasn't their authenticators fault but the communications system it used ... well I guess it was both their faults! http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/blizzards_authenticators_compromised_battlenet_hack_attack Physical authenticators get broken all the time as well, and ones that are much more sophisticated than the cheap ones we bought from SE. The ones we use at my work for our ASA vpn's cost roughly $100 each and are about 15X's the encryption hash length and salts as the cheap-o SE version does. The previous generation of them was burnt a two years ago. http://dankaminsky.com/2011/06/09/securid/ Real token, token app, Still get hacked. Nuf said.

Personally if it were up to me: I'd force people to use it. Apps aren't free to make and while they have the token security system in place they probably had to add some stuff to utilize an app based method. I have no doubt that implementing this will cost them some, it probably won't be much, not enough to warrant charging their customers for it when they REALLY want you to use it since it's likely to save them time and money not having to deal with as many hacked accounts.
would like to use it, but no IOS device here or androis FML! /sticks to token :X
I think its kind of pointless onless this is the new way for them to sale us more storage, that will be the only reason why i will buy this. Besides that the token are small to take with you any where and they look cool as key chains as well.

Never said they weren't, neither is designing a piece of hardware, however the difference is in manufacturing costs and method of delivery, they could have sent out tokens to all users, at a hefty cost, they can easily distribute this software, at no additional cost. Just saying that the two aren't so easily comparable, as there is a severe difference in method of production, and delivery, in a physical device, and software. Not trying to say that both didn't take some effort to design/implement. another way to put it: I agree with you, I said it poorly. Sylph.Ashiya said: » would like to use it, but no IOS device here or androis FML! /sticks to token :X This is also a step in the right direction because when your battery finally dies on your physical token, you won't be screwed. And SE won't have to go through the trouble getting you a new one assigned, if they even do that lol.
I always wondered about this because there seems no way to open the token without the risk of damage. maybe i will buy after trying to replace the battery :P

If it loses it's date/time it will lose sync with the server, meaning it's good as trash. So if you try make sure it never loses power. |
