Gamer Escape down?
Anyone know whats happened with them? Theyve been gone the last few days.
GamerEscape said: We've talked about this for a long time now, but we feel we are finally ready to make some large scale changes to the site while at the same time, minimizing the impact on those coming to us for information. With FINAL FANTASY XIV's last character save coming later this week, we thought this a perfect time to do what we need to do. The main purpose of this down time is so that we can update our installations for our blogs, forums and wikis. In addition, we hope to simplify certain things around the site to both make things easier to maintain on our end, and to make things less confusing for all you awesome people out there. We're hoping that the site should only be down for a few days, however we'll be updating Twitter throughout the maintenance to keep all of you updated with how we're doing. We apologize for this downtime and appreciate you sticking with us while we knock out some necessities. http://ffxi.gamerescape.com/ ah, i have http://ffxi.gamerescape.com/wiki/Main_Page set for homepage, never saw that message.
I hope they don't change the format of GE wikis. thats one of the main reasons i like them. Also the main reason i don't use the original wiki anymore. Sizing is horrible. Both page and font. 1/3 of the page just for adds. pop ups. Table alignments off. The site itself lags alot for me. Its quite annoying. I hope GE is back up soon! That's so weird because for me, GE has always been much slower. But the old wiki is horrible, for sure.
They're both pretty awful to browse, and it's made worse by the fact that they've been more or less abandoned by the more active playerbase as far as updating is concerned, so they're basically only useful for info on several-years old content.
The only thing changing is new versions of our base OS and the versions of the software which powers the site, forums, and wiki.
If you don't like the default GE layout/skin for the wiki, you can easily change it to a skin of your choosing if you're logged in. If you have a personal wiki skin preference that is not available in the list of choices on Special:Preferences, we might be able to accommodate adding it. Any other suggestions are welcome as well. We're glad to finally be separated from the corporate Wikia which has allowed us much more freedom to suit the communities needs. You just need to speak up :) Leviathan.Kincard said: » They're both pretty awful to browse, and it's made worse by the fact that they've been more or less abandoned by the more active playerbase as far as updating is concerned, so they're basically only useful for info on several-years old content. This sums up how most people feel about it now. If everyone who complained about that took 3 minutes to update a page that is out of date the wiki wouldn't be out of date.
imagine that That's just the thing. Most of the people in the community still enthusiastic enough about the game to update a database are doing it on BGwiki. Can't speak for anyone else but at the end of the day I prefer a simple and clean layout for something that's basically an instruction manual. GamerEscape looks pretty and all, but I go to these sites for information first and nice pictures only if it's a map or something.
I'm speaking as someone who used to use/update the old wiki quite often but the site got so overloaded with scripts that it made me stop using it. It's pretty impressive when a page that's mostly text manages to make my computer burp more than HD videos on youtube or whatever. I prefer BG wiki as well, but if you're going to complain about something being out of date, or no information, then why can't you spend a few minutes to update the page so others don't have the same problem you had.
I'm not saying we should all start fixing up GE or Wikia, as I prefer the way BG wiki looks over the other two. My only complaint with wiki's is there is no decent place to find crafting recipes. Ffxiah has been out dated for at least a year, wiki has half the mats without pages or caps missing, BG has few and far between recipes filled in, and gamerscape is well a copy of the wiki so.
Its like the newer synths are a secret or something. Maybe I should get a test server account so I can find them before hand and stalk up on items. We've been working on this on BG Wiki; if you check crafting category pages (e.g. Bonecrafting), many of them are totally filled out with all recipes in rank order. We're working on something to get all recipes directly on item pages as well. I think all of the category pages are completed with recipes except Goldsmithing and Smithing which are each missing a bunch of mid-level range crafts. If you need a particular recipe and don't know the skill level you can always CTRL-F the item name on the category page. Well that is actually progress, I havent checked BG for a long time for crafting information. That will be much better. I disagree with hat first part. I think GE has had a perfect layout. I've used it for all content up to and including abyssea. Including crafting. (or wiki before GE came to be) It has all the info I've needed, in a format that is easy to see all at once, and easy to read/understand. So I've stuck with GE. The sad thing is, for newer content, ppl cling to BG like a baby. And the same for GE/wiki for pre aby content. If one site has it screw the rest. I don't mean to diss any of the sites, some ppl prefer certain styles and thats fine. But ppl forget (or just ignore) the idea that they can still update other sites. Point being its called a 'community' so it would be nice if it was treated that way. I no each site has some things they prefer to do their way, and thats fine to. But since all of them will never combine to one, ppl should rly take the time to try and update something now and then. You never know who you might help out ^^ Asura.Charitwo said: » If you don't like the default GE layout/skin for the wiki, you can easily change it to a skin of your choosing if you're logged in. This is the only issue I've had with GE. Logging in. I had my account with the site. And had nothing but issues trying to log in to fix the content of my crafting guides. Granted that was right around the birth time of GE. So glitch's were probably high as things got fixed and changed around. I ended up getting a temporary password, but could never find a spot that would allow me to change it to something else. As a result, after fixing my guides, i never really logged in. Always used the site, just not logged in. I'm not sure if my account is still active or not there. So, yea. If you have any questions about BG wiki you can take a look here:
BG Wiki Discussion Can give feedback or make suggestions. I'm not sure if there is a place to report issues but perhaps we should have a thread that normal users who don't feel comfortable editing can post and tell others about things that are incorrect or lacking info and perhaps supply said info? What I like the most about BG wiki is most things are backed by forum discussion and testing and that testing is often directly linked in the page. Then I can go read the forum posts and testing that supports the claims and get even more detailed information about what I want to know. I'd like to start editing myself at some point. Wikis are community driven, the administrators can't do everything, and any help from anybody is appreciated. So, yea. If you have a problem with another person reverting changes with no apparent please bring it up to one of the staff. The proper way to address that issue should have been him asking you about the issue and discussing it. We need to be working together, not against each other. Irony like a ***.

So, yea. well then, no real reason for the website to ever come back then, is there? I gave up on updating wikis because of experiences similar to this. But i also think its just a reason lazy ppl use as well to justify to themselves not doing anything. I'm sure their are some legits tho. I would suggest implementing some kind of main stream way to deal with this problem tho. It is demoralizing to update something and then have someone else erase it all. Incidents like that can make ppl no longer bother wanting to update, which is a real loss. (Anything to keep updater's updating!) I quit posting info on wiki long ago cause of the restrictions placed on formatting. I’m not very PC. I never tried on GE although it is easier to print stuff from there.
BG is OK but REALLY lacks some cross reference links. I can surf through the other two and string the links along like my thoughts and eventually find what I need. IE cant spell NM name correctly I cant find it so I go to the zone its in, scan down and click NM. Often times I use FFXIAH as a "finder/search function" then click on all sites wiki/GE/BG until I find what I need. Eca Ragnarok.Ecaroh said: » BG is OK but REALLY lacks some cross reference links. The wikis are next and we've made it a priority to get XI back up first.
We appreciate your patience and apologize for the inconvenience. Leviathan.Kincard said: » They're both pretty awful to browse origional wiki lags so bad for me now that half the time it dissconnects me from XI Glad to see that GE seems to be back up. Was a pain not being able to access that site.
One question tho... Why the heck is the navagation bar (and search function) on the left instead of the right side now? We've gotten quite a few "make it like ffxiclopedia" and what I mean by that is the menu from the oasis skin, which was the skin first used after the move to wikia. We're planning on including a pop out menu on the left side of the page and it makes more sense to go from left to right than it would right to left if it were on the other side.
The wiki is up, and by all means feel free to make edits. Please know however that it isn't finished just yet. The big parts are over and now we have a lot of tweaking to do, mainly with the styling of various aspects of the website. We also have our new forums up on the site, so please feel free to leave feedback for us on there as we're sure to see it :) Asura.Fusionx said: » and it makes more sense to go from left to right than it would right to left if it were on the other side. I would think it better the other way for the same reason. I read/look left to right. Would rather the info im searching to be starting to the left. (Their by making the bar on the right). (Their by making the bar on the right). A valid point :) My question then would be if there were to be a right side bar, would you want it to pop out to the left? or have it drop down like we had previously? Our initial theme will be as I said above, pop out menu on the left. However, if there is enough demand, perhaps we could look into doing the same style but with the bar on the right. |
