It's probably a misdemeanor to cross the yellow line which is why she was reluctant to answer the reporter's question in the story as the case is most likely pending. It still doesn't empower the driver to use force which is why he was (rightfully) suspended or fired.
He didnt uppercut her for stepping over the yellow line,he uppercutted her in self defense. You cant have 2 sets of rules with "its not like she hurt him or coulda done much damage to him".Its not the point.
1.He was in control of a fast moving heavy vehicle (dont know when he stopped it) but even if it was before she hit him,he had other lives in his control essentially.
2.Self defense, plain and simple. You have a *** right to defend yourself after being assaulted.I dont care if you take a haymaker from a 600lb absolute unit or a *** slap from a 100lb soaking wet girl
This is true. Rules apply though when you are in a working environment. Driving a bus or being a police officer. Doesn't matter. When you are working the rules are enforced and you must not assault any of your patrons. There are consequences for your actions. All he got was fired and that was legit. The Transit bus company as a whole had to take action and remove him. It's a huge company. They can't favor an individual or it'll look bad. Willing to bet everyone at his work has sided with him, but there is nothing they can do to keep him from being fired still.
Actually there are strict policies to when you can actually use force to pin down a criminal as cop. oop
I know, but the guy I was replying to made it sound like he shoulda been fired simply because he hit a woman. He might not have meant that, but thats how I took it as reading it.Breaking his work rules/policies/etc he knew what was up.But did he do the RIGHT thing? He sure as *** ***did
Alot of rules get in the way of the real world anyways. I remember in my last job,the way we were supposed to do things was the most awkward way designed to get in your own way the entire time
In my opinion I think people are just put in really bad situations at times. Like the bus drivers. You can A be a *** and sit there and take the beating from this absolute stranger and do nothing about it. Or you can B be human and defend yourself from physical harm. If you try and sum up the same situation and place it under different circumstances like if they had met up on the street. Him hitting her out of defense would of been ok. He would still have a job.
When you put someone down, they'll likely get angry and get back up,when you put someone 6 feet down (like in the video) the average person with common sense will know better.I'd go that extra footpound to make sure it ends then and there
When you put someone down, they are effectively rendered as a non-aggressive threat anymore. Meaning They are restricted from being a conceivable threat. Being put 6 feet down, means you've killed them. Which i seriously doubt what the driver wanted.
The driver simply put down a threat, he didnt' bury her. The More You Know.
I have issues with the type of force he used which may have been a factor in his dismissal. He hit a patron and no company is going to stick its neck out for someone who does that, especially with it being recorded and with how brutal it looked in the recording. If he was strong enough to knock her to the ground and throw her out of the bus by her hair, he was probably strong enough to restrain and/or remove her some other way. He may have still caught ***from the company, but like was just said, he got put in a terrible situation.
Again, self defense. Sure, maybe he could have man handled her off the bus, but with the uppercut, he risked the least amount of injury to himself.
She already put her hands on him once, she could have done some damage to him had he simply tried to restrain her. And she got up and tried to start more ***after the uppercut, so the force obviously wasn't that excessive if she didn't even stay down.
Also take into consideration, he is 59 years old. She is 25. He kinda had to use force, considering the passengers reported her choking him. Even after releasing her grip, he's still gonna feel physically drained (i've been there)

The way I understood it was more 6 feet down being related to how hard he hit her,not the more obvious "6 feet under" reference
Society says : "59 year old bus driver stands up to thug. "
Bus Company : " Driver is fired."
His actions were professionaly wrong, that much is clear. To keep with the idea of not attacking someone weaker than you, if this had been a 50kg male spitting on him and grabbing his throat would everyone still be as outraged?
Her actions were irresponsible and risked the other passengers lives.
There are many examples where his actions would have been applauded, all of which involve the pasenger not being disabled, a child or a woman.
Gender or status should not provide exemption from retaliation, if you act like an A** you deserve to be treated like one.
There aren't really classes out there for 59 year olds that teach them how to render someone useless with 1 blow. He did what he could the best he could. He only hit her once and that was out of self defense. He could have tried something else less lethal but the out come would be her most likely inflicting more physical damage to him.
From the interview sessions done, it would appear that her profession is that of a cook. Which, believe it or not, are rather strong and durable. I've seen small girls do amazing things in the back of a restaurant which would surprise you.

All I'm getting out of this is......what was she doing out of the kitchen
I don't know the full story behind this, but from what I can gather (and see in the video) I think the bus driver's actions were justified. The fact that the victim(?) was a woman shouldn't matter. ANYONE who acts like that in a bus, thus endangering everyone, can and SHOULD expect retaliation. Although maybe a bit too extreme, I can totally symphatize with the bus driver.
I'm kinda disappointed that the guy lost his job. He might have over done it a bit but the girl choked him, he didn't know if she had any weapons or anything. He felt threatened and reacted on instinct. One of the reasons I moved to the US from France was because this country usually stood with the good guy in situations like this unlike France which has become a safe haven for thugs.
I don't blame the guy one bit, and making this woman out to be some kind of victim is utterly ridiculous.
However - I watched the first video and although the sound is rather poor, some of the things the bus driver said could almost be considered as egging this woman on. And that's where he went wrong imo, he shouldn't have said anything other than telling her to sit down, or to get off (if she couldn't find money to pay for the fare or whatever the issue was to begin with). Saying stuff like "I'll get my granddaughter here" and "cut your face" or whatever (don't remember the exact wording now) wasn't the smartest thing he could do, it seemed to enrage her further.
And yes, I do realize that keeping your cool when you get insulted and threatened like that straight to your face, is easier said than done. But he really should be old enough to see that he wasn't helping the situation by answering the way he did.
I live an hour away from Cleveland and let me tell you this is stereotypical. That area is nothing but ghetto *** trash talking scum. She says she was looking for money, ***, nowhere in the video did you here anything about bus fare. All she did was call him *** and tell him how she will get will booskies out there and beat ***. Dumb *** got what she deserved, AND, he was thoughtful enough to throw her jacket at her when kicked her off. Idk about anyone else but if a uppercut from hell was delivered to my face I'd be prob be running or just cut my losses, but she felt the need to come back for more. Media portrays her to be some young innocent girl. She is 25 yrs old for christs sake, you learn not to hit people when your 2. Being a woman doesn't allow you to do whatever you want and expect a free get of jail card b/c you are smaller and weaker. You want to throw a punch like a man then you can receive one too. This guy is a hometown hero IMO.
The worse part of all this is the girl probably got away with "free" rides plenty of times before this by claiming to be looking for change. Just happened that this day this particular driver wasn't going to stand for it. I know for the company I work for they warn those who drive the bus that if a passenger gets unruly like that you just let them on the bus and notify the transit police asap. Cameras will be on the bus to protect your job.
Pretty sure he was just calling her ugly "It looks like someone cut your face" if I remember correct, wasn't threatening to cut her face
Oh ok, as I said, sound is poor and whatnot (plus English not being my first language). Either way, it's the one mistake he made imo, to answer her back with anything other than "sit down" or "get off the bus".
this country usually stood with the good guy in situations like this unlike France which has become a safe haven for thugs.
wow... are we living in the same world? universe?
what kind of stupid comment is that?
As it is, the bus driver would have had more chance of keeping his job and the woman been accused and found guilty of putting every passenger of the bus in danger.
If you want to act like you're top dog, don't call foul when you get humbled. She deserved a punch that hard - I don't think she'll ever forget it, and that's the point. Does he deserve to be fired? Yes, because he didn't handle it professionally. Socially, things went how they should've. From a business stand point, nothing went right.
Well, obviously her Bitcheus Majora Lobe is underdeveloped! Who on Earth tries to ruin a guy's day by verbally antagonizing and taking a swing? What a neanderthal! Most of us know light passive-aggression sprinkled with the head *** and insincere smile over the course of a few days gets the job done.
Situations like this is exactly why NYC policy changed to say nothing if patrons skip the bus fare. Leave that ***to the NYPD for your own protection, it's not worth getting attacked because defending yourself means you lose your job.
In the past year or two 3-4 bus drivers have been stabbed by patrons similar to this lady when confronted about fares and the solution has been to put plastic barriers between the operators and patrons. It looks like Cleveland needs to get to doing that before a bus driver is killed worrying more about his/her job than their lives.
Imo, not probably what I would have done, but she deserved everything she got. Antagonizing the shit out of him and putting her hands on him (the fucking driver no less, who is responsible for the safety of everyone on the bus)

A shocking video circulating on the Internet Friday shows a Cleveland bus driver punching a teenage girl during a verbal altercation. The Cleveland-area transit authority has responded to the incident, confirming that the unidentified driver has been removed from his post and that his behavior was "absolutely unacceptable."
"We also saw the video today. Upon review, the driver was removed from duty and suspended. We are investigating," Mary Shaffer, spokeswoman for the greater-area Cleveland RTA, told The Cleveland Leader.
The video, filmed by a fellow bus rider and posted on the website World Star Hip Hop, begins with showing an unidentified teenage girl wearing all black engaging in a verbal dispute with a seated bus driver.
As the dispute escalates, the driver then makes a comment to the teenager which prompts the girl to aggressively touch the bus driver.
The bus driver then stands up and begins walking toward the girl, repeatedly saying, "You're going to jail now."
Suddenly, the driver delivers a heavy uppercut to the unsuspecting young woman.
Passengers on the bus then intervene, telling the driver that he just struck a female.
The bus driver responds to the teenage girl, who is laying on the ground: "Wanna be a man? I'm going to treat you like a man."
The bus driver then attempts to throw the teenager off the bus, but the girl re-boards. The scuffle continues until the two are separated by passengers.
The teenage girl then repeats the driver's phrase from earlier, telling him, "You're going to jail now."
Viewers of the graphic video have expressed mixed reactions to who is at a greater fault in the verbal and physical altercation, with some suggesting that the bus driver was completely out of line, and yet others insisting that the teen girl should have never put her hands on him.
"On a scale of one to reckless, how awful is this bus driver?!" wrote Jessica Ofor on Twitter.
Gary Lewis somewhat agreed, writing, "That bus driver hit that girl something awful and she shouldn't have hit him first."
Still, others were simply blown away by the sudden act of violence.
"Oh nooo, my mouth dropped when I saw that video of the bus driver hitting that girl, I'm still in shock," wrote one commenter on Twitter.
"That bus driver video was scary.... I'm still in shock," said another viewer.
The Greater Cleveland public transportation system, the RTA, released a more general statement Oct. 12 explaining their perspective on the incident, which occurred last month.
"RTA saw the video posted on YouTube of the operator incident on October 11. Through the investigation, we believe the incident occurred on Sept. 18. Upon identifying the driver, he was immediately suspended and removed from duty. His behavior is absolutely unacceptable. RTA apologizes to our customers for this incident. A full investigation continues," the statement reads.
