Religion isn't harmful in itself. Its when individuals follow it like mindless zombies without inputting some original thought.

People in 2012 either are lazy or don't seem to understand the pastor/reverend/priest only held 2 purposes originally.

1) to translate and read the bible because, most people wern't literate for many centuries.

2) for confession and other religious ceremonies

Besides that people really shouldn't be allowing priests/popes/reverends or any religious entity to spoon-feed them information and thought. Rather they should be reading the "good book" and forming their own conclusions.

Traditionally children wern't allowed to enter church or catechism until they were literate and able to read the bible. There's a reason for this. Old traditions die unfortunately.

The realization that my parents were wonderfully flawed people was a sign of adulthood (to me).

I'm not sure if you've heard this concept. But journalists usually confirm sources prior to publishing. They have something called "credibility" to risk.
