OK so I downloaded the steam version of FFXI. I boot up the game, and it doesn't ask for security token or SE password and just straight up logs into my account. There's no option for either of these, and the client skips the update check. Normally I wouldn't care, but since there seems to be a security issue w/ the passwords not existing, I keep getting POL-5312 so I'm unable to start up FFXI. I've tried deleting and redownloading it, but no success.

It seems like there is an older Verison of Playonline in Steam and it wont update aotomatikly...

Have you got the right version of POL? I think Steam downloads the US one by default iirc, I remember having some problems when I used Steam to install.

Try get the EU POL client from the SE site and swap them over.

I am going through the same problem right now.

Yes, it gives that error and it also gives thewrong version of playonline, even after update.

You can tell because Play online it shows year 2002-2007. When you register it doesn't even have a spot for ID token name. This problem has been causing me a problem all week. On the plus side if you can download a ffxi torrent and use the steam code to register off ffxi ebsite. Then you can install the game nonsteam and it should work just fine.

First, use Steam to uninstall FFXI, then go to Program Files (Or wherever steam is installed)\Steam\steamapps\common\ffxi\ and delete everything there.

It stems from version info files being left behind from an old install. It thinks you're updated when you're not, and thus doesn't try to. I think it might just be the "patch.cfg" and "version.dat" files under PlayOnline and patch.ver and patch.cfg under FINAL FANTASY XI. Try deleting those and running an update check.

I don't get it, why use steam to get ffxi instead of straight from the DVD's? Seems like there's been many issues with steam and ffxi.

Steam defaults to install FFXI in the Steam folder, or at least it is for me (was not given the ability to choose the location). The version of PlayOnline you get from the SE site puts it in a separate Program Files folder as it should (the way it would from an install from CD/DVDs or a Torrent, as you can select the location). Of course it would normally put the entire game in the same location. This is the issue.

*** frustrating. Going to go home, do a clean uninstall, wipe the registry of it, and do a full reinstall. I'm half tempted to do the reinstall from my disks as I really can't find a good trusted full torrent.

Question: it appears I can't get to an option to select a different location to download when I use Steam. As such, am just going to just try a copy/pasta. I'm damn frustrated, so can anyone give me solid directions to how to make this work. I really don't feel like wasting another day of my 30 day trial on my 2nd account.

...I should have just used the codes, don't ask me why I didn't. I only bought one of the 3 first mini expansions (ASA) so I for some odd reasons thought I had to install to get those, instead of just using the code.

So again, if anyone can just hit me up with some solid help I'd be grateful.

um, pretty sure you can't use the steam version and the regular playonline, you have to use the disks w/ the downloaded pol, or steam, not mix and match, but I've never attempted as I refuse to leave steam on a computer of mine.

You just use the codes to create another account, and login from any playonline, it doesn't matter which client you use.

as for a download: check Krizz's Ramuh profile, there's a link in the comment section, download page, even has the updates and tells you how to patch them.

ok will do. So once I d/l via steam, get the PoL via steam, do all the updates via steam, just cut/paste all of it out of Steam? Like I said, its defaulting to download it into the Steam/steamapps folder.

no, you can't just copy/paste something steam installs out, if you do it that way you have to play from there.

download the .iso and install the real XI, and get pol from the website, skip steam, you just need the code

I mix and matched on 3 different machines w no problems. It all stems from having the proper version and region specific instance of POL. Steam will work flawlessly with a stand alone instance of POL and even work flawlessly with Windower (I don't know for certain about what all plugins, as I only used it for alt+tab and recast timers and haven't played in well over a year)

Honestly it's just a matter of observing paths and registry entries. If they're correct (for whatever version of the PlayOnline Viewer you're using) you're fine.

I can change my FFXI install from English to Japanese by just swapping two small patch files within it and starting the corresponding POL client.

I used to use Steam for FFXI on my laptop when I made my mule account. It became too much of an *** pain for some Windower plugins (at the time). You have to link your Steam POL location to the normal POL location, so when Windower checks "Program Files\Playonline\whatever", it gets auto-linked to Steam\games\wtf.

Symbolic links in Windows is something like:
Code
mklink /J "C:\Program Files (x86)\Playonline\Final Fantasy XI" "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\I-forget-what-else"

I'm just going off the top of my head there. Google "Symbolic Link" and you should get a help file or something.

edit ... never mind, here you go!

I highly suggest you just uninstall Steam FFXI, download a torrent version from Krizz's page, or BG and install it. You don't need a CD-key for POL or FFXI, just a valid account which you already have.

Krizz FFXI files (mostly torrents): http://tehkrizz.net/FFXI/downloads.php

clean install via the torrent and files on Krizz's website (TehKrizz.com). Put everything in the right place, no corrupted files. Did of course have a nasty update, but could have been a lot worse. Checked over 39k files for FFXI on startup, but did a D/L of 3200ish. So like I said, all things considered could have been a lot worse.

Up and running, no complaints except I won't bother with this again. Should have just gotten the codes from Steam and called it a day. I'm sure its worked fine for others, but for those with the game already installed just fine, I can't see a reason to mess with it. Don't re-invent the wheel.

Only things you have to do to fix this is download the EU client from the Official EU download page
and set the install directory to the steam folder steamapps/common/ffxi to overwrite the old version. Then update that POL client and do a file check on FFXI to repair the broken files, no need to do a full reinstall.

Make sure automatic updates for ffxi are turned off in properties in the steam menu as well to prevent it happening again.

Edit: WTF @ necro?
