Texas: The Education Sector is Full of Idiots
I still wish I hadn't seen the birthing process in HS...
We got to see that in parenting... It was meh but then again wasn't the best angle.

There are many people out there who think that providing a specific set of knowledge is the best course... in doing so shelter them from many other sources of information... so is it about opening their horizons or directing them to where you think they should be? Knowledge I approve of? Hardly as there is no "me" in this, just the facts as we currently have them. Specific sets of knowledge do nothing but attempt to obfuscate the truth. Complete and comprehensive coverage of the human phenomenon known as sex, copulation, reproductive activity, the nasty, knockin' boots, bang bang bang among other less popular terms is the ideal. Lakshmi.Flavin said: » I still wish I hadn't seen the birthing process in HS... The baby in my video came out of that mother like a 6 year old on a water slide. Push? More like woooosh. Odin.Liela said: » Asura.Ina said: » Lakshmi.Flavin said: » are you talking about age or the grade their in? I was saying when they're 10-12 years old... Holy Jehoshaphat, I wasn't even developed until well after I was 14 and wasn't allowed to group date until I was a high school sophomore and wasn't to solo date until I was a junior. If someone had wanted to even touch me at 13-14 years old I would have been grossed out and terrified. Those girls are braver than me! Edit: Then again when I was 5 years old I had the basic size/weight of a 3 year old, and when my parents took me to kindergarten at age 5 they told them I couldn't come in because I was too small and immature. I had to attend pre-kindergarten for a year instead. So I was just a late bloomer all-round, I think. The thought of me actually having sex didn't really cross my mind at that age! I think I would have had the same reaction! Lakshmi.Flavin said: » I still wish I hadn't seen the birthing process in HS... I still have not seen this. But I hear it's messy and bloody and poopy. I was in the hospital when my most recent niece was born, but there were limited people allowed in the birthing room and I wanted my mother to be there, so I opted to stay in the waiting room. Caitsith.Zahrah said: » Good that you were trying to knock them out though. I would recommend knocking out dual-credit and classes offered in community college so you have a nice GPA buffer for the unexpected. edit:

Lakshmi.Flavin said: » 20 is almost unheard of in HS... 30 is usually an average class in a decently populated school... you're never going to have perfect conditions... Lets not even get into the stories of people getting roughed up by their parents come parent/teacher night. Yeah... it definitely happens...
in VA most of my classes were 25+, pretty much the entire k-12 experience.
one of my larger concerns with public education is the lack of taking exceptional children and letting them be exceptional, not sure if this has changed any or gotten worse sense I was in school, but it was annoying as hell to be ridiculed for reading ahead because the rest of the class was slow as balls, every time when we had to read out loud I had to have them tell me where they were still at and I had to flip back to it... math and history were about the same, in fact in my HS history class (9th grade) I sat in class and played Tetris and still had a higher grade than the rest of the class, only one person steadily had better grades than me in math, and he spent all his time studying, I went home and played FF8 (at the time), I don't remember much of my last 2 years of HS as I was pretty much done short of required english and history, I went to a vocational school for computers half the day both those years, where I actually learned something usefull. The sad part is I was only 2 language classes shy of getting an advanced diploma, even with half days my last 2 years, Spanish 1 three times doesn't count as 3 years of a foreign language :P (never one for studying, and such a thing requires a lot more time than in class work and minimal homework, plus the lack of actually using it, as I was rather antisocial). As for the OP, yeah both sides of the political spectrum have their issues, but holy *** ***republicans are just trying to destroy themselves with the people who can actually think. Lakshmi.Sparthosx said: » Your feelings about your child are irrelevant to the fact that sex ed gives children choices where they might not have had any. My retort is that you are foolish to begin with if you leave the rearing of your child to the public school system. The moment I need someone else to instruct my kid not to stick his tiny fingers into a live wall socket because I'm not an electrical engineer is the moment I get a vasectomy. Quote: You speak of not being taught sex ed yet you "don't care" about anyone else now you've avoided the immediate pitfalls of ignorance. Your opinion, but not one I share. I'm all for giving people choices and equipping them with as much knowledge as possible be that from parents and schools alike. What teens do with that knowledge is their own business but just because your child is in a better position than others doesn't mean we abandon everyone else in my view of it. And seriously, I can't stress this enough, I don't care about anyone else's kids. I actually hope they have a billions of babies that ruins their lives and crushes their hope and dreams forever and ever and they're stuck at McDonalds flipping burgers because they can't afford to get a better education because they have a baby of their own which probably won't learn from their parent's mistakes and go on to have a teenage baby and thusly the cycle repeats itself over and over in a weird messed up dead-end-life cycle. Or worse: crabs. It has little to no impact on me, except maybe positive because now my kid has more opportunities. You live your life, I'll live mine. As long as we don't mess with the other one's life, we're cool. Getting pissy because a group of people, which happen to be the majority in that society, deciding that they don't want their teens knowing about birth control? Their decision. If there's one thing my kid picks up from me, I hope it's this: Question everything. The only conclusions I come to on any given subject are my own. If I cannot rationally and logically reason my way to a conclusion, backing itself up with solid evidence, then I don't adopt that as my standard. Which is a great thing. My coworker who is STOIC conservative republican said to me the other day "You know... I can't read you some times. I can't tell which stance you will take on any given subject." Which, to me, is basically saying that I think for myself. tl dr Jet is just such a badass!

Cerberus.Pleebo said: » You really think an uneducated society won't affect you or your kids negatively at all? There would be more positive than negative. Idiots are easy to manipulate. Are they? I mean people come on this site all the time and call the other side an idiot and they never really manipulate em into anything...
Those easily manipulable idiots are the reason we have these problems. You're not terribly bright yourself if you don't see the value of an educated society.

Idiots are easy to manipulate. except being ruled over by an uneducated government, being taught by uneducated teachers, having to work for uneducated employers, having to deal with an uneducated service sector... Idiots also tend to turn to crime to make money (remember they're idiots, they ALL think they're smarter than every other criminal, and that they'll never get caught). As the education rate drops, the crime rate will climb, until it reaches a point where even if you never personally come face to face with a criminal, your quality of life is still adversely effected.

Fenrir.Sylow said: » This is just the tip of the iceberg. http://www.austinchronicle.com/blogs/news/2012-06-27/gop-opposes-critical-thinking/ Quote: GOP Opposes Critical Thinking Party platform paints original ideas as a liberal conspiracy BY RICHARD WHITTAKER, 1:17PM, WED. JUN. 27 It's official: The Republican Party of Texas opposes critical thinking. That's right, drones, and it's part of their official platform. Actually red light cameras are extremely dangerous. They cause more accidents and get people killed. Here are a bunch of studies for your reading pleasure: http://www.motorists.org/red-light-cameras/studies Also all flat tax ideas are not bad. Some even have people making 30,000 or so and under pay absolutely nothing. The main idea behind it is tax simplification which makes it so companies can't just have a whole bunch of tax loopholes and end up paying little to no taxes like they do now. This is why you will never see a flat tax in america. The companies don't want it because they'll have to pay more taxes. There are a lot of different kinds of flat taxes. But if you want to sound hip and say that everything that someone from the GOP says is stupid, than I guess you can generalize if you want. Lakshmi.Flavin said: » Are they? I mean people come on this site all the time and call the other side an idiot and they never really manipulate em into anything... Whoa now, lets not go comparing internet arguments to real life. And yes, idiots are easy to manipulate. My evidence? 1000 year case study. Quote: Idiots also tend to turn to crime to make money (remember they're idiots, they ALL think they're smarter than every other criminal, and that they'll never get caught). As the education rate drops, the crime rate will climb, until it reaches a point where even if you never personally come face to face with a criminal, your quality of life is still adversely effected. Crime is a function of relative poverty, not absolute wealth. An individual determines that: Crime Payout - (Risk of Being Caught * Penalty) > Legitimate Work This is when a person turns to a life a crime. If everyone in the society was overall ill informed, wages would normalize and you would still be the tallest pigmy. ---- Someone also commented (but removed post I believe? Or I can't find it) that I must not be too bright if I cannot see the benefits of an educated society. Illogical conclusion. I was disagreeing that an ill-informed society has more disadvantages than advantages. How you jumped from that to me being anti-information is beyond me. The two ideas can mutually exist (that their are benefits to living in an ill-informed society and there are benefits to living in an informed society), and the fact that you boiled it down to "He doesn't like A and B is the opposite of A, so he must like B!" further proves that you think illogically. Yes there are benefits to being educated. No, I will not force you to become better informed. Again, you live your life while I crank the dial on this one to awesome. Link to the actual document (pdf): http://s3.amazonaws.com/texasgop_pre/assets/original/2012Platform_Final.pdf It's a pretty hilarious read, but my eyes did almost roll out of my head. Apparently, they are only vaguely against pornography. Guess they do have some sense. Doubt this country can shock me anymore, with their stupidity.
