By increasing the number of items by even 1, this would apply to every character in the game which would cause a spike in server lag. Rest assured that the development team is looking into this, but they would like to proceed carefully. | |
Not going to happen, I believe it use to be more than 7 and they had to lower it.

I am sure one of their concerns is possible decreased mule-account subscription-revenue if they were to increase the AH posting capacity significantly per-character.

Are their servers a bunch of Dreamcasts linked together with a soldering iron and gorilla glue?

Also, would this lag increase server wide, zones with ah's or simply lag only when using the AH? If putting a single extra slot on the AH really increases zonewide lag then I have to wonder exactly what kinda programming went in to the ah system. By this logic, wouldn't adding new items to the AH also increase lag?

Yeaaaaah, this excuse is ***. Every time you check a category on the AH, it sends you a list of how many of each of the items are in stock. That's why things on FFXIAH update the number in stock before the names in the sale history.
More slots per person is going to result in more non-0 numbers, but it won't actually change the amount of data sent unless we start to overflow 256 and they have to increase the variable type used or something.
So yeah, they don't want to lose their mule subscriptions.

Look up the capability of server equipment from 10 years ago and be shocked to find out you're not really that far off.

wouldnt it be like 12+ years ago? since they probably took a few years if not more to make the game

Didn't they upgrade their server hardware just a few years back? Remember it being a big deal.

I have always wanted more slots to sell things...however, I have thought about this in the past, and the unintended consequences of such a move.
Price crashes. It sounds miniscule, but simply adding an 8th slot does change how consumables are listed. If 30 people sell say reraise earrings and post 3 every day (90), they currently use 3/7 (43%) of their AH capacity. Give them an 8th slot and they add one, to make 4/8 (50%) of their AH capacity. They still have 4 slots free, no change to them, but this adds 25% to the market. The price drops on RR earrings.
However...the supply on Mythril ingots/ores does NOT change, as farming them is not exactly a huge moneymaker compared to other methods these days. So goldsmiths start to lose money on making reraise earrings. So they stop making them. Fewer Goldsmiths make Reraise earrings, and so (and here's the key) fewer goldsmiths buy mythril. So fewer people farm it. Prices spike on the earrings, but the overall supply on mythril never fully recovers. And your reraise earrings...well, they never totally come back.
It sounds totally conspiracy theory I know, but look what Abyssea has done to MANY crafting materials. Check the AH for the prices of many previously expensive crafting materials that are now dirt cheap, and others that used to be commonly farmed items that are not ridiculously expensive. I'll show you clothcraft as an example (as it is my craft, and I'm most familiar with it):
Shining cloth: http://www.ffxiah.com/item/831/shining-cloth
over 200k back in the days where Kirin was the only source. Now, sales rate is over 3/day, unheard of 5 months ago.
Silk Cloth: http://www.ffxiah.com/item/829/silk-cloth/?stack=1
Stack price. Less than 2 months ago, 50k a stack. A farmable item was silk thread, with cloth being a staple on the AH. Now, spiked in price to amazing levels. The nature of the game that I mention above.
I don't complain, it's the market at work. And if you add slots, you increase the volume of many things that will cause major fluctuation in the markets, especially consumables. Just think of all aspects before you just think of being able to slap up all those wyvern skins.

if they reorganized the ah, and/or maybe deleted (or made non-ah) items it would help it clear up.
make like a list of items on the official forums people would be willing to part with, give people 90 days to turn in the items for gil/paper/something of use via npc, after that delete the items and those who still had it send them the gil value via delivery box (point of npc would be so people would know what's going on).
also at the start make the items no longer obtainable, replace with better items on said mobs etc.
would improve the game overall really.
edit: like make the garrison items 1 key item, etc.

Probably off topic and more related to the "Future of FFXI" thread... but if they have such an issue "investigating" the ability to add even 1 more AH selling slot...
I can't help but question the future of the game.
They need to just come out and be honest... "We would consider raising the number of sale items on the auction house, but it would affect our subscription numbers of additional characters." They are a business after all...
Really... really really tired of the words "Investigating" and "Balance"...

Tanaka jokes aside, the ah is laggy enough as it is, I'd rather them take their time to investigate than to roll it out and it crash horribly.
While it is a business I wouldn't say that it's just an excuse for money.
edit: keeping the players happy here and there creates more revenue than mules in the long run.

Implement 14 style retainers with searchable market wards, disable bazaaring by characters, and charge $1/mon per retainer. Jeuno lag would be vastly reduced, item search comments would be rendered obsolete, spending hours searching bazaars for ***would be a thing of the past. You wouldn't even need the AH anymore.

I have been playing since the NA release. Never saw any such thing. I have seen, several times, where they were seriously looking into it.
Squenix said LONG ago that the AH and mail systems were the biggest server loads.
I believe that originally the plans were to give us quests to increase AH slots, but it proved impractical. Having to code for the PS2 probably didn't help.

They should have a server separate for the AH system, and have AH cross-servers.

Its all down to ps2 limitations and the codeing in the game.
why u think u cant go past 80 slots on invent etc. move the ps2 users to there own server and brush them under a rug!!
By javelinx 2012-04-07 14:16:54
honestly if it comes down to the real reason being because of mule subscription fee's etc...just add 8 slots per char on the AH and raise the price of the prime character by a dollar...I would pay a dollar or two more per month if they weren't half-a$$ing all of the dev stuff...and PS2 support, I can't wait until they decide to kill that...

Why hasn't the game been "re-released" coded for Ps3?
I'm no coding wizard but wouldn't it help at least a tad bit? I'd assume most Ps2 owners also own and or like myself just play the Ps2 game on a Ps3 anyway, So really your loosing no sub's and i'm almost 99.9% positive if people wanted to play this game THAT bad after a Ps2 rug sweeping they'd migrate to a PC/Xbox. Where's the business sense?

To put it simply, they would have to completely rebuild the game from scratch. The only reason why the Xbox 360 got a release is because its essentially a PC port, and since they both use Direct X, there's not much to change.
Edit: Preemptively hit send ><
