Easily the most playtime I have on any PS3 game.
I HATED the 3rd one with the burning passion of a thousand suns. How does this one compare?

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it but Skies of Arcadia was an awsome RPG. It was for Dreamcast and i wish they would remake it for new systems or make a #2 reallllly liked that game glad i got to play it while dreamcast was still around.

I think this is one of my many favorite dreamcast games and I absolutely loved the Gamecube remake. I think i like this game more than any other RPG ive played as far as that gen of RPGs. Its playable on Wii and things considered as far as PSP and DS remakes go, they can be included.

BECAUSE OF THIS TABOO, AS FAR AS OLDER RPGS GO I DONT MIND IF YOU ALL WANT TO DISCUSS THEM HERE, BUT KNOW ILL ONLY BE INCLUDING CURRENT GEN/REMAKES IN THE LIST AS PER PREFERENCE

I feel i was a little unfair with the banter but if you can keep it civil then feel free.So Wulf, Artem and whoever else I retract my statements so you may continue any other discussion.

You sir, have incurred the wraith of my game collection,as soon as my body recovers from the gym....

Havnt played 1 2 or 3, but Star Ocean 4 is one of the most, pleasantly surprising amazing RPGs I've ever played.

The third game was tiresome to me. I quit about 70% through, which I never do, and is even more strange because you can fight Lenneth, and I love Lenneth... and I didn't see it through, the game pissed me off that much.

I never actually played Star Ocean 3, I own it, just haven't finished 4 yet. I really like it because it reminds me of the Tales games early on and then the endgame is all about super ultra mega huge combos, though it does get a little grindy.

My main reason I like playing it though >.>

So...much...jiggle.

I forgot to mention Folklore which was a somewhat under the radar game. The game itself is a bit of a grind since you end up going to the same areas over and over; however, the story itself was magnificent (I thought) and warrants at least one play through.

Atelier Iris series for PS2 was amazing. Mana Khemia was excellent as well; actually moved me a bit. Mana Khemia 2... not so much. Although, there's two paths to the game and you have to beat both to unlock the final chapter, yatta yatta.
Golden Sun series is pretty good too, even if Dark Dawn left us with another cliff-hanger.
Chrono Trigger/Cross definitely play, amazing games.
FFX has sooo much extra content to do and is really quite awesome. Looking forward to the HD release later this year in hopes the US can get access to Dark Aeons. :<
FF Tactics A2 was pretty good, had a lot of stuff to do and jobs to level, kinda reminded me of the PSP/PS1 one, which was excellent in itself.
The main Kingdom Hearts series is pretty good. By which I mean, Birth by Sleep, 1 and 2. Chain of Memories is... kinda annoying, but not terrible on PS2. Anything else is... |:
A lot of the FF games were pretty decent, didn't really play the PS ones, moreso the SNES ones which were quite enjoyable. :3
A lot of the rest of them, I either haven't played or don't care enough to comment on, but the ones mentioned above are my personal favorite picks out of that list up there. ^

I honestly don't know how Fallout can be considered an rpg.
How isn't it?
exactly, if anything, bioware and bethesda RPGs are true RPGs by nature. you create the char, assume the role, and make all the decisions.

JRPGs betray everything roleplaying is, and end up cliche anime action adventures full of niche tropes found almost in every JRPG known to man. fall for the obvious trap, trust the obvious villian, you move cliche teens through a scifi setting, and that isnt role playing at all.

Necro quote but i hate when people do that about any genre of anything.
Ain't nothin new under the sun. People are quick to talk about JRPG cliches and reused character types/plot devices, but what exactly are games like skyrim/oblivion/fallout/dragon age doing thats never been done or used before.

Designing your characters look... sure as heck cant do that in a lot of games. Story based in a high fantasy world with humans vs elves vs dragons vs demons? haven't read about that before. Post apocolyptic survivor? now where have i heard that before. Sure they are all well written and developed plots with interesting characters but the freedom of choice doesn't make WRPG better any more "RPG" than JRPG. I've stopped more blights and plagues than a keyboard with a broken L.

Letting you have freedom to do/go as you will is not what defines an RPG. JRPG are role playing experience in the aspect that the creators have thier own story that they want you to tell, that they want you to experience and be apart of as opposed to just watching it or reading about it, you get to become the characters and make the adventure happen. The Role that you play is predefined for you, and you play characters with their own motives and goals, not your own.

Where as WRPG revolve around placing you in a world with a story going on and its up to you to decide when and how you tackle the adventure. You're roll is loosely defined and its up to you to "make up your own adventure".

The fact that WRPG are typically nonlinear kinda tricks people because ultimately you can't just do whatever you want. you're limited by the content of the game just as much as you were as if you were playing a JRPG. If you make a different character you can experience the game in a different way but ultimately the difference is limited by your characters play style. With the expection of a couple games like Mass effect, and ES games somewhat, the stories and quests in the game wont be much different and the choices you make much of a difference overall.

And yes there are games where choices and input do matter, and those games are all the more amazing for it but that aspect of role playing games is hardly limited to WRPG.

Kingdoms of Amalur is the next Skyrim, Im lovin it. Get it now.

Amalur is pretty bland honestly, but at least the gameplay is much better than Skyrim.

I'm not sure exactly how you're defining "bland" ... but I disagree.
Reckoning has me hooked. The combat is very dynamic and if you find it too easy, just turn up the game's Difficulty Level feature. The map/world and number of quests and adventuresome undertakings are both very, very large, and there's plenty of variety. Plus, I love that you can cross-mix your character's style... you aren't locked-in to being ONLY a Warrior, Rogue, or Mage ... you can have some elements of each, if you want.

I could say more, but I'd encourage any real RPG fans to give Reckoning a try. I doubt you'll be disappointed ... unless you're looking for a Xenogears/Xenosaga style RPG that focuses almost entirely on storyline, with minimal attention to battle/growth/tactics/exploration.

Also, if you're looking for old-school-style RPG's, I don't know if Phantasy Star II and III have been mentioned in here yet.
It's hard to find now, but you can get them both in a compilation for GBA.
I imagine there are Genesis emulators out there that could play these games, too. Of course, you could go hardcore and try to find a working Genesis and cartridge copy of PSII or III.

Quoting for emphasis with a degree of disagreement on the third installment. The second game is the best of the three and imo one of the best RPGs released on PS2. The third game borderlines on comedy at times, with the first game taking itself more seriously than the other two. Third isn't outright bad, just different from the other two. Only major criticism I have with the games is that it's very easy to miss certain things and a lot of the quests give very little in the way of clues for progression. It's generally not an issue, but in the first game you can easily miss the determining factor in which ending you get and you're highly unlikely to know how to find it later without referring to a guide.

Baten Kaitos (havent played, but looks good)
Lots of "Guide Dang It" in the sidequests again. Time-based system ends up being more bad than good, at least from what cards I was able to piece together without checking a guide, but the battle system isn't heavily reliant on any of the cards that change over time iirc so it's not a huge deal. Story is good from what I remember. There's also a sequel but I've no idea how good it is, never played it.

4 was awful. Can't speak for any of the later games, I stopped playing them after that. 1-3 are very good, 3 being my favorite. Very deep combat system, though a lot of the potential is wasted if you don't have the opportunity to play against a human opponent.

Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon (cant go wrong with fire emblem)
As much of a fan of Fire Emblem as I am, this and the new FE are two games I wouldn't necessarily recommend. The ability to reclass characters in this game put me off, and apparently in the new one your characters don't die if they're defeated... but that one's not coming to the US anyway. Definitely recommend the GBA/GC/Wii FE games though, they're amazing.

Quote:
Legend of Zelda : Phantom Hourglass (I hear good things, yet to play)
One of the weaker games in the series. Decent, but not great.

Quote:
Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time (great game)
Unless you're ROMing it up I'd probably recommend this (3DS) version. I've heard minor complaints about the control scheme, but this is the only way to get the Master Quest version (hard mode, basically) of the game short of buying one of the rare Gamecube discs or pirating it.

Quote:
N64 : Ogre Battle 64. Fking amazing. Playing through it once again on my Wii atm
^

Also Majora's Mask. An unusual Zelda game, but also one of my favorites.

EDIT: Legend of Legaia for PS1 was pretty good. Since Zelda games were brought up here, I'll also throw in Mega Man Legends 1 & 2 (PS1). Two of my favorite games ever.

Not sure if this was noted or not in the last 6 1/2 pages but for White Knight Chronicles you can just get 2 unless you are into collecting games. The second game comes with the first game included with all of the enhancements made in the transition from 1 to 2, when you chose new game it just asks if you want to start from the beginning or from the second game (starts you at lv 35 instead of 1).

Knowing that the original Star Ocean game for the Super Famicom ran on the same engine as the Tales of Phantasia, that comes as no surprise. Of course they're similar as they were developed by the same people ... ;)

You know, Tri-Ace was formed by a bunch of former Nippon Telenet employees. So was Wolf Team which later became known as Tales team when it joined NAMCO. Fun story huh ? They're all connected. :)
