If the government was allowed to shut down these websites without due process, what the hell was the point of SOPA/PIPA?

There were so many ways to bypass that 72 minute cooldown stuff on Megavideo. The biggest way was simply to use a VPN to fake your IP Address.

Icefilms was yet another way-- you had to download a script downloader called Greasemonkey, then the script that was made for Icefilms (or download the script directly if on Google Chrome)... it allowed you to download/stream files uploaded to Megaupload/Megavideo/Megaporn as well as a few other upload sites.

The government needs to be smart and go about these shenanigans another way if they are so intent on cockblocking piracy. Another "Megaupload" will simply pop up within a month or two, and trust in govt will simply sink further.

Ironically, I find it hilarious that Swizz Beats was the CEO. Love it when I hear about an African American running a business. Makes me feel proud, even if it had shady dealings underneath. >_>

Damn, I forgot Megavideo was part of Megaupload... More than half of AnimeFuel's videos probably just went dead. :(

There's been an ongoing investigation of megaupload for at least 2 years now from what I've read. They didn't just wake up today and decide to do something totally arbitrary.

Actually they did just wake up today and decide to do something (albeit not arbitrary). After all they had a two year on-going investigation. Funny how it drops during this SOPA/PIPA debate. Try not to hide your head in the sand over this matter. Our government does this crap all the time.

MANY sites I go to, I see *** "Download Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 for $.99 at megaupload!" or "Download blabla for cheap!"

Plus the *** charge money for faster download speeds. SERIOUSLY it was a scam.

I've never, ever seen Mega anything charge on a per download basis.. I'd have to question if the links you saw are like those sites who charge you for freeware.

How exactly did they violate due process in this case?

Please educate on all the times they do this. Also, please elaborate on what you mean by "this crap".

They were everywhere months ago. They're not there anymore obviously but I do remember seeing things like "download this movie or this show for only a dollar!" or even free sometimes.

They made something like $300mil just on scams like that, from what I've read.

Wish I knew about it before all of this... lol

As best as I can understand it, these charges are based on the amounts of money going into and out of the country that were earned by illegal means.
