Megaupload / Video shutdown, US Arrests
/sigh
Who do you blame on a site that houses millions of downloads for piracy? Surely, not the owners of the site, who most surely didn't post the content itself on the site? I don't think people understand how hard it is to police a site like that for pirated content. The site maybe should have been shut down, but why arrest the people who ran it? Doesn't make much sense to me.

Now I can't download more bleach episodes I was DLing a batch of files from them, it shut down before I got the last one :<
Dammit.. used Megaupload a number of times for all kinds of things, watching old wrestling PPVs, downloading games, films and all sorts of things. If this carries on we won't have anywhere to share anything...

I can kind of see where they come from though. It's MUCH harder to police the millions of people for infringing copyright vs. the one person who controls the whole site, regardless of that one person's innocence. But still, it makes me really mad that they could do that. >.< It's significantly easier for corporate media and content owners to have a legal system that runs based on "Guilty until proven innocent" modus operandi than one that obligates them to investigate and penalize the source of infringement. Doesn't matter if there was a legitimate cause or operation within the site, if users upload copyrighted material then the whole thing goes down. Responsibility be damned, they want their money.
I can't help but find this the equivalent of sinking a ship to fix a leak. I just realized another site I used to visit was a domain owned by megaupload ... and now it's gone too :(
sucks. The states sure know how to make an entrance.
![]() Money laundering? There's something I'm missing here.

There's something I'm missing here. has something to do with them paying people to upload files or some weird *** ***like that. http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2012/01/megaupload-indicted-shuttered/ I was linked this link so maybe that explains it? The indictment.
I have no sympathy for them, honestly. 36 out of 39 files identified to them remaining a year later? How about you slap the other cheek, too? Edit: Quote: 25. On or about June 24, 2010, members of the Mega Conspiracy were informed, pursuant to a criminal search warrant from the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, that thirty-nine infringing copies of copyrighted motion pictures were present on their leased servers at Carpathia Hosting, a hosting company headquartered in the Eastern District of Virginia. A member of the Mega Conspiracy informed several of his co-conspirators at that time that he located the named files using internal searches of their systems. As of November 18,2011, more than a year later, thirty-six of the thirty-nine infringing motion pictures were still being stored on the servers controlled by the Mega Conspiracy. Aye, it seemed it was more of a failure to police themselves more so than it was to police others that were uploading.
Although the conspiracy to launder and racketeer money is interesting to say the least. Bahamut.Krizz said: » The indictment. Eh, but it's extremely hard to police a site that big. You pretty much have to rely on the userbase to report infringing files, which I guess most don't because well *** it? I dunno. I've never downloaded anything from there. *I just noticed the part where the people who worked there knew about the files and didn't remove them, that's crazy... I got a small chuckle out of the whole "Mega Conspiracy" thing though, lol. It's kind of mind blowing to think about it like that. I was sympathetic up to that point.
im sad these guys failed to do things right. IMO I thought it was a good site to upload files too, cleaner than most (add-wise) and straight forward (not jump trough hoops to get your file), and not to mention max file size cap.
yeah I used this site a lot for JP media :/ It's too bad, if they made an act of good faith that they were investigating and taking available measures to remove items from their servers that were requested for removal, they'd probably still be up and running still.
Bahamut.Krizz said: » I was sympathetic up to that point. Yeah...they had it coming if they really did that. Wow. I wonder if they're going to go after the users as well.

The other three probably just expired, lol. Leviathan.Chaosx said: » I wonder if they're going to go after the users as well. Handing out speeding tickets at the Indy 500 would be an easier task.
