What is with companies not wanting to hire over qualified people for above minimum wage? What is wrong with quality work for a lower wage really. Times are hard.

Well, I don't order much online. Major Retailers like Staples & Future shop are probably the ones that will still do do well, ( unless something that I am not aware of will happen). Not sure how Best buy has any effect on the Canadian market, I got real good deals off my setup. Geek Squad asked if they could do my upgrades, I just said "Newp, I can do that service, myself"

Mandatory job training costs money. If you are overqualified and they train you, you're much more likely to get another job way faster than a non-overqualifeid employee and quit fast. So the overqualified guy works for 3 months then gets a real job, the underqualified guy works for 2 years.

I'm always shocked how busy the Best Buy near my house is. I've gone in there a few times to look for something, usually a cable or charger or something simple. They sometimes don't even have the very basic items I want or they're priced about 300% higher than the competition (which I'd go to first if it weren't 3x as far away). When I went and picked up FFXIV this past summer they had it for $60 still so I bought it at Microcenter (local Gamestops didn't have it at all) for $20.

I imagine I'm just not BB's target audience, and likely most of us aren't. I build my own PCs and obviously do repairs myself rather than paying Geek Squad $50 to install RAM. As far as I could tell when BB started it was their low prices on CDs that attracted a lot of customers and I'd imagine those days are more or less gone. Everything else is wildly overpriced and despite having an absolutely enormous store their selection is usually pretty bad. It's an electronics store for people who like gadgets but have no time to research at all and have very little knowledge of computers I think.

Shitty customer service, terribly marked up prices, a horrible reputation from Geek Squad, and they're going out of business in an economic slump?!

Who could have suspected?!
I like our economies system. If you do stuff like this you go out of business like you should.

If you provide good quality stuff for a good price and think of new and innovative ways of doing your business you will keep growing.

I like BB, shitty customer service is a way of life in the U.S., can't shake that... go overseas sometime and you'll see what real service is like. I usually just check for lowest prices online and compare with BB, generally BB does well for me.

Aww, you beat me to it :(

I actually wouldn't have minded bailing those out, if the country was allowed to have a country wide, majority-rule vote on that :) It would force people to educate themselves on the issue.

Last year we bought a SAMSUNG Plasma TV from there, my fiance kept an eye on it for months and did a lot of research and finally the TV went on sale ($-400 USD), that was pretty much the only exception for buying it. Please know that you should not just walk into there to buy a TV (or anything electronic for that matter), thinking it's great just because it looks great. Best Buy staff DOES tamper w/ the settings on the TV's to make the more expensive ones look "better", and the slightly lowered priced ones to look "terrible" to point u right to the most expensive they have. You'd think that make perfect sense right? Well our TV was just over a grand and it's still better than *most* LED's out there. My point is, don't buy based off prices. It's all just a gimmick. I'm unsure if other places do anything similar. But... do some research first, for anyone thinking about buying anything from best buy that can be tampered with :)

Oh, i can gurantee this, but thats any TV store.. When i worked at Circuit City, we were told to make the ones with the highest mark up look the best. While the cheap ones looked like ***on purpose.

But yea, the TV's that have the highest markup are going to look better cause those one the ones that the employee are told to sell 1st and everything else is just trickle.

Before i bought my TV, I told the employee I wanted a plasma, and they tried pushing and LCD on me cause of the markup and they gave me every excuse in the book why "THAT" TV was better then any other TV. Needless to say that didn't like my counter arguement, cause they never had anything to argue with.

Tigerdirect, decent prices and super fast shipping & reliable.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Tigerdirect is a scam. They have great deals because their merchandise is refurbished, factory seconds, discontinued, or salvaged. Best Buy is far better if for no other reason than I can inspect my merchandise while I'm still in the store and they'll actually take it back and refund me on the spot. There are better options than BB I'm sure but I promised I would never buy another product from TigerDirect after they sent me an order with no less than 4 faulty items and took 8 months and about 12 hours on hold to refund my money.

They usually don't want to hire overqualified people because they don't want to spend the time or money getting them integrated only to have them leave 6 months later when they find something better. As for being overqualified by having take one HS computer course I find that highly unlikely.

i work at best buy in the magnolia department, as far as the "settings"
they are all set to "demo mode" but when customers want to see settings or how it looks one way, we change it and it usually gets left. Other displays like endcaps and our Elite and Panasonic displays run on blu ray players so of course they look better. I try to stick to the magnolia room if possible, deal with higher end clients and mostly product thats "illegal" to sell online. Im not saying best buy is perfect but i pride myself on taking care of my customers, not over selling and getting them what they need. no one in best buy is commission sells but we arent a red cross, we are there to make money. Anyone who doesnt understand that is a moron. The reason why our stock drops is because *** want to discount everything. Of course our stock drops when you want us to sell ***below our minimum advertised price. Again another reason why i love the Magnolia Department, most the stuff is price locked. cant touch it anyway. Buy it online? cool, no manufacture warranty. i will say i would love to move on to a high end audio/video store like a design center or a mom and pop shop.

I know they have a bunch of locations, even as far as CA.

Here's my thing: I like Best Buy, but they've worn on my patience a bit.

Last year when the original Marvel vs Capcom 3 came out, I wanted the collector's edition, so in advance, I pre-ordered it.

I show up at the store and they tell me, surprise, they don't have it. I could not believe it. I mean, I pre-ordered it, doesn't that kinda MEAN it'll be there? So, strike against business model or corporate or inventory or something.

However, I will add that I talked to one of the guys there and he actually did try to take some time to help me out. He said he could give me the regular version and gave me his actual number and said "Listen, when we get more of the collector's version in stock next week, you can call me, come in, and I'll exchange the normal version for the collector's. You get to play the game, and get the bonus stuff a bit later. I'm really sorry you don't get the extra stuff today." I'll say that generally I've been lucky with other folks at the stores, but the article is DEAD ON for inventory.

I don't hate Best Buy, but they certainly leave the door open for their competitors. BB I like for convienence - I know w/e I go there will be one nearby and I generally know what they will carry. But that is about their only strength.

Service is generally poor in most of the stores. Countless times I've been able to walk to all corners of the store and not even get anyone but the person at the front door to acknowledge me.

Pricing is not that great. I know HHGregg doesn't carry as much as Best Buy does, but what they do have (strong in appliances and tv's) they are THE cheapest place to get stuff. HH will sell it at cost to steal the sale from anyone else.

Geek Squad is a joke, end of story.

I haven't seen their store model/strategy change much if at all over the years. In retail, if you stay stagnant, you end up dying.

I do admire BB for their loss prevention. They have to be one of the most hardcore companies for this. They do not mess around with shop lifters...so kudos for that.

I really hope that Best Buy doesn't go out of business, mainly for the convenience of it being an all-around electronics store that you can find very easily/often.

I love buying games and accessories there. Also getting those Reward Zone certificates every now and then is pretty neat.

Worked at Best Buy hated it.

No one really does any work and yes I speak from experience when I say that you're encouraged to stretch the truth about what computers you have and what an upgraded package consists of. The sales aren't commission based its mostly hourly except for maybe appliances. Most of the "upgrades" consist of small tweaks anyone can do. rAM costs double what you can get online.

People try to rip off customers with little electronic knowledge especially in the computer section. I've warned my family not to go there unless I'm with them cuz some stuff I've seen is just WOW.

Not all best buys are like mine but I can tell you I no longer shop there after working there.

Edit: Also Bb loses money off every computer they sell thus they try sell black ties or extra services to turn a profit. Just a fun fact for yall

When I bought my computer there the salesman would NOT take "no" for an answer when he asked if he could charge like $30 to make a backup DVD for me, he said I couldn't do it myself, and even if I did I'd only have one chance... I did it in about 15 minutes, by typing "backup" into the Start menu and clicking the backup disc app.

I don't really like doing anything involving computers there anymore, online ordering is nicer because you can do what you want without being pressured.

I guess nobody here read the article...

this article is a total hoax... this person is predicting that Bestbuy will go out of business in few years with the recent trends that it has given itself all from a sales experience gone wrong that he had with his friend......

If what this author said is true about best buy is true, first place that will take a notice of this downward trend will be in the stock market.

Yes, the market price of best buy shares are much lower than what it used to be but that is NOWHERE close to a bankruptcy.

Price plummeting will happen MUCH more drastically than a 5 point drop in last 6 months or so. Anyways, giving my 2 cents, don't jump to a conclusion unless you have better evidences to back your statement.

PS I agree with everything most people here said, "Bestbuy = overpriced, best customer service, and HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE geek squad," just uncovering the truth from a perspective of a former stock broker

I was one of those customers that had that "inventory" problem.

So Black Friday sale. The sale was Thurs.-Sun. and I bought my item online for store pick up on Thursday. I buy a holiday pack 360 with halo reach and fable. I was super excited because they still had some left at a best buy about an hour and a half away. 100$ off a 360 plus two games is great, so an hour and a half drive isn't going to kill me.

However, I get an email about an hour after I ordered it saying to call this number because they couldn't deliver my product. I call the number and the lady tells me to physically go to the store and they will make me a "comparable package." Hah. I go to the store the next day (Black Friday) and get the biggest *** run around ever.

They tell me I have to call the 888 number to get a gift card number so they can do that. When I call, I'm on hold in the parking lot for 3 hours. When I finally get a person, they didn't input the transfer number properly and the automated menu asks me to input the transfer number. I call again and they transfer me to an answering machine for corporate. I call again and the person that I'm talking to tells me there was a glitch in their inventory system and that's why this happened. They transfer me to a supervisor to fix the problem, but I just get hung up on. I give up for today.

I call on Saturday and just straight up demand a supervisor. I tell her the whole shebang and she apologizes right away. Because the product wasn't available anywhere, she cancels my order and places me a new one with 100$ off of any xbox bundle I want (I got the gears of war 3 bundle and LOTR:WitN & MW3for games) plus any two games. To top it off, she also gave me a 75$ gift card for the inconvenience.

tl;dr? Short version: Best buy Black Friday inventory fail, 3 days of crap service in person and over the phone, but I got what I wanted plus $75. Worth it? No.

I wish they would go out of business.. They're the only store that really sells PC components in my town.. If they went out of business and that store closed down, it'd make room for a more competent store to open up in their place. Like maybe Fry's.. I've only been to one before, but I liked what I saw..

I will only go to Best Buy when I'm just extremely desperate and can't/don't want to wait.. And what I need isn't sold in any other store.. Like when I took my video card completely apart for a good thorough cleaning and realized I was outta thermal compound when I went to put it back together.. Or when my PSU got fried and I had to replace it.. Didn't want to wait for Newegg to ship it to me, so I went there.

Best Buy is an absolute last resort, I hate Best Buy with such a ridiculous passion.. The sales reps and tech supports know about as much about computers as my grandparents do collectively.. (It's amazing my grandma can even set a digital clock, and my grandpa literally couldn't) Best Buy's knowledge of what they're selling actually makes Gamestop employees look like prodigies of knowing what they sell..
