Really? Interesting. I always though Best Buy was one of the electronic retailers that were doing really well. I love Best Buy. I hope they don't go down the drain :(

While they said it could be a matter of years I can definitely see why.

Even back what CompUSA was their main competitor, I would always check out both stores and CompUSA would win 9/10 times.

CompUSA's computer repair section was better in terms of service and price compare to Geek Squad. Hell I was able to get a job for about 6 months there before they went out of business.

Even getting a job there was a lot easier than Best Buy. Best Buy's employment process is crap. You can't just walk in there and fill out and application and have a few words with the manager. It's all done online. Shotty!

Nowadays if you're looking for great prices on computers and electronics online is the way to go. Newegg, Pricewatch's database, etc.

If you're looking for someplace local to go, well I know not every state has it, but not far from me is the Micro Center Warehouse. Prices that are almost equal to online ones plus you can actually look at what you're buying. They even discount the sales tax to 1/2 of whatever your state's tax is.

So it's online places and localish places like them that are the wave of the future so to speak. Best Buy simply cannot match them. Plus in my experience people at the Micro Center are actually knowledgeable! Geek squad couldn't even tell me the difference between DVI-A and DVI-I, never mind helping me find the right cable. I had to post my questions on here to get the answers I needed!

So it definitely makes a lot of sense that Best Buy is going downhill, as they have been for awhile now.

I do admit, Geek Squad isn't the best. Hell I took a BASIC computer science class and my laptop died. I told my dad the exact problem based off of what I learned in that class, and he insisted that we bring it to Geek Squad. At first they were like "we can't tell" but I explained to them, then they were like "Oh yeah that's right it is ______ problem!"

Like, seriously?

The problem with my monitor cable in the end was... Jet knows... I had to set the monitor to detect DVI inputs. Such a stupid problem such a simple fix, and it wasn't even a question that they thought to ask.

Shitty customer service, terribly marked up prices, a horrible reputation from Geek Squad, and they're going out of business in an economic slump?!

Who could have suspected?!

Only stocking 6ft monster cables which are priced ~$50+. Yeah, who could have guessed that people wouldn't shop there?

Telling people that they absolutely need to buy bundled software for overpriced laptop packages to work. You won't have access to all Windows 7 features if you don't buy the super bundle!

Can only lie so many times before word of mouth kills you.

The only reason I bought the cable there in the first place was that someone gave me a $50 gift card to Best Buy for x-mas. And the cable was $30 lol.

After that I asked if people gave me gift cards to be either universal or for Target lol. Got like $95 worth of Target gift cards this past X-mas, much better value imo.

Best Buy's over here have a nice staff (excluding Geek Squad) so their customer service is fine. They're real with us. "Look, you don't need ALL of this ***, but I would recommend this."

Of course the manager would be all "YOU MUST!" but the regular employees are nice. I never really had a problem with their pricing, as their stuff works and their warranties are nice.

I prefer the in store experience. I'm always comparing Newegg's prices to where I go. They are usually just about the same, even the same rebates. And only half the sales tax.

Pricewatch is still a good place too to check on prices.

I order from Newegg and Tigerdirect all the time.

Best Buy can rot to the ground for all I care, so I HOPE they go out of business and do us all a favor. IMHO, they are over-rated, over-priced, and have the most terrible customer service. On top of all of that, anyone with a brain goes in there to ask questions about their prodcuts and they can't even give you a straight answer about their own products, and I turn around saying "Well if you can't justify buying your product, you just lost a sale". As far as their Geek Squad team? I think I'd be better off asking a 10 year old, they tend to have a much higher IQ.

That "article" sounded more like "I wish Bestbuy goes out of business because I can't stand them" than a real analysis. I didn't continue to read so maybe the guy has some other interesting points, other than "they're unprofessional I hope they go out of business" theme I sensed from the beginning.

In my opinion tho... I don't think that can happen. Maybe they'll close some stores (just like any other company would do) down the road if things are really bad?. I don't even LOOK at gamestop anymore... Bestbuy is the way to go, imo.

Now choosing Best Buy over Gamestop for games is a bit silly, for the most part. Best Buy, like most bigger electronic retailers, will sell games at full price for a long, long time. I saw the first Dissidia at Gamestop for $20, then Gamestop sold it for $7. Both new, lol. (Not talking about buy-backs, that's a whole other discussion)

I only buy systems from Best Buy though. Used games work, never had any issues with any. But a used system?

If its the same article I read it is aimed at investors and mostly to warn them about BB's declining market share and almost obsolete business model.

It isn't dying yet, just in decline. If they do nothing new they will not last 5 years.

To me BB's greatest value is the same as Sears. I check their prices. Then I know the maximum price and hunt for cheaper.

I bought, MW3, BF3 for $40 USD each. And also bought Dragon Age2 for $9 USD... You'll never see gamestop with such good deals. I've bought many other things in the past too from bestbuy that would cost me a lot more @gamestop.

Perhaps it's just your Gamestop(s). Those sound like the prices at my Gamestop.

I don't go to Sears too often, maybe because there isn't one close by.

Couple things I've noticed bout the bestbuy here:

Once the Competition was gone, the prices went up.

Customer service?? Never seen it, surprising the only time I have even got asked if i needed help was when in the CD section. The other sections I have never been asked (Probably explains why all my stuff i bought elsewhere).

Geek Squad? What? I'm sure they are set up like Firedog was and they are all just a bunch of people that put a disc in to fix the issue. They are VERY limited on what they can actually do. But yea, I've noticed the geeksquad crew is usually doing nothing, either smoking or chatting but never really work and pretending that they know more then anyone else.

I could see them going under. It was a really well written well thought out article. Who knows when it will happen, but it will adventually unless they change their tactics.

Y'all have some shitty Best Buys, lol. I constantly get asked if I need help, no matter what section I'm at. I was even asked while walking out of the bathroom.

It's odd that their are complaints about being unable to find a helpful employee when the salespeople are commission-based.

I don't know why anyone would purchase electronics from Best Buy (or Future Shop in Canada). Order computer parts online and buy videogames at Walmart or wherever is cheapest (it's Walmart).

My guidelines for buying anything from Best Buy usually falls under "Never buy anything they can tamper with". The last few times I've bought laptops/Netbooks (ASUS), I wound up taking it home and immediately reformatting it. My Fiance works as computer/server IT and told me there was a bunch of unneeded programs and SPYWARE.

Last year we bought a SAMSUNG Plasma TV from there, my fiance kept an eye on it for months and did a lot of research and finally the TV went on sale ($-400 USD), that was pretty much the only exception for buying it. Please know that you should not just walk into there to buy a TV (or anything electronic for that matter), thinking it's great just because it looks great. Best Buy staff DOES tamper w/ the settings on the TV's to make the more expensive ones look "better", and the slightly lowered priced ones to look "terrible" to point u right to the most expensive they have. You'd think that make perfect sense right? Well our TV was just over a grand and it's still better than *most* LED's out there. My point is, don't buy based off prices. It's all just a gimmick. I'm unsure if other places do anything similar. But... do some research first, for anyone thinking about buying anything from best buy that can be tampered with :)

As the Gamestop versus BB debates go. I found both places very similar in prices tbh. But why not just go to Wal-mart? They usually are a few cents cheaper anyway and in some cases bucks cheaper..

Need a computer part? Do Newegg (free shipping) & dirt cheap prices. Tigerdirect, decent prices and super fast shipping & reliable. For everything else... Dell Business, Amazon.com, hell your mom n pops PC store would have cheaper and better prices than this place. & BB's workers on the floor do not even know anything about their own products. If you can't justify buying your product when someone asks, then you just lost yourself a sale! Need computer games? Go to Gamestop or Walmart... Anything else, literally there is amazon for...
