HDMI vs DVI
So i just bought this computer last tuesday and its to arrive this thursday. I admit i over looked the fact that it does NOT have an HDMI port rather it has a DVI port. Im kinda upset about that because had i spent another 50 bucks i couldve gotten with HDMI compatability All in all I was wondering if DVI is any good in comparison to HDMI cause i really dnt want to be stuck using VGA T_T;;
Hooking it up to a TV?
DVI-D is just like HDMI. Technically the only difference you will run into is that HDMI can also carry the audio signal. With DVI you just have to separate your video and audio with an extra cable. You are good to go either way. Bahamut.Enkidou said: » Hooking it up to a TV? DVI-D is just like HDMI. Technically the only difference you will run into is that HDMI can also carry the audio signal. Sweet u just made my thursday a bit better haha oh and it was for comp and eventually TV HDMI and DVI picture quality is the same, only that HDMI support audio when DVI doesn't support it.
Functionally they're pretty similar in terms of visual quality, but the HDMI is superior just because of the wider array of compatible devices.
Just get a DVI to HDMI cable, I share my desktop on Samsung TV with it
use the DVI on a monitor, HDMI on a tv.
Honestly, I prefer DVI. Many computer monitors come with pretty shitty built in speakers, so monitors with only DVI are cheaper, giving you more money to buy an awesome sound system separate from the monitor.
Also, Monitor cables go into the graphics card, and you'd have to use a separate audio cable to get any sound anyways.
go to monoprice they sell cables for hella cheap, you'll save a ton of money.
kvazz some graphics cards carry audio signal now OP if you want audio to your monitor/TV you'll prolly want a 3.5mm audio cable (the normal green cable that goes from your computer to your speakers) along with a DVI cable if your TV/Monitor has DVI connection. If it only has HDMI (no DVI) it's possible you won't have a 3.5mm audio jack so you can use a Y cable 3.5mm to RCA ![]() with a DVI to HDMI cable to carry the video only ![]() the last thing you want to make sure is that you get the correct DVI connection, there is DVI-I and DVI-D (comparison both dual link) ![]() (comparison of all including single link and VGA) ![]() Deemos said: » Just get a DVI to HDMI cable, I share my desktop on Samsung TV with it Cerberus.Kvazz said: » Also, Monitor cables go into the graphics card, and you'd have to use a separate audio cable to get any sound anyways. Pretty much all you need to know. I use an DVI to HDMI for my PC -> HDTV connection. Since the sound card (or lolintegrated) is isolated, you're gonna need separate audio anyway. If you have only a VGA connection (I doubt it, since we're in the 21st century) most HDTV's have a VGA option as well. I know mine does, which I currently slot my Xbox360 into, since it's the highest truly compatible picture the lol360 can use. They are more common on smaller TVs or HD monitors but TVs larger than 40" typically don't have them. And DVI/HDMI (they are the same thing) will provide a picture quality of equal or better quality than VGA. What's with putting "lol" before words? Assuming your motherboard isn't garbage. Alright peoples.
HDMI and DVI are *electrically* the same ***... (WOW how comes ?) Well their connectors physically different for a reason: HDCP (yeah Hollywood *** but they have the money and pay the people who define standards out) In the end it boils down to: Having HDMI gives you all capability a DVI-D (digital only DVI) connection plus digital sound and HDCP compliance (yay it let you watch BluRay videos). So of course having a true HDMI connector gives you more connectivity options. Now regarding the OP post, if all you will do is connect a computer display to the PC, DVI is "ALL YOU WILL EVER NEED". :) Depending on what graphics card you have, you can actualy get video and audio out of the DVI connector.
I'm pretty sure most of the semi-recent cards supports this. (Edit: most semi-recent NVIDIA cards, I don't know much about ATI) Bismarck.Josiahkf said: » always makes me cringe when people worry about hdmi for audio when using build in tv speakers that's like buying a 2 thousand dollar amplifier in your car and buying a 50 dollar subwoofer It also one less cable to plug in. depends on the speakers and the boards d/a resolution.
It stinks that I can't even use my half decent audio most of the time due to the possibility of a noise violation... Fenrir.Mariane said: » Alright peoples. My system has two mini-display ports and one DVI-I port. All three ports are capable of accepting two monitors.
DVI-I is a big ugly unfriendly port. So I use the mini-display ports cuz they are easier to connect. Display-port is the successor to HDMI (which succeeded DVI). The GPU also does audio. Bahamut.Jetackuu said: » digital cable is a digital cable yo, like people trying to say the gold plated ends on hdmi cables are better... Shhhh (you don't want to ruin a multi billion dollar business do you ? lol) People pay for "Monster Cables" because they're gullible. Yes if it's digital it's either 1 or 0, ON or OFF or ALL or NOTHING. So there's five LVDS (Low Voltage Digital Signaling) pairs on a HDMI cable(It's a sort of very high speed SERIAL communication). If a single signal of the cable is broken, you get no image. Nothing but a blank screen. :) Fenrir.Laraul said: » My system has two mini-display ports and one DVI-I port. Display-port is the successor to HDMI (which succeeded DVI). The GPU also does audio. Mini DisplayPort is not a successor for HDMI, its just Apple's version of an HDMI port Mini DisplayPort (2008) is capable of driving resolutions up to 2560×1600 HDMI version 1.0 - 1.2 (2002) was only capable of driving resolutions up to 1920×1200 HDMI version 1.3 (2006) is capable of driving resolutions up to 2560×1600 just like the Mini DisplayPort and was created 2 years prior HDMI version 1.4 (2009) is capable of driving resolutions up to 4096×2160 Now back to the original post, like everyone else mentioned DVI is just an HDMI without audio capabilities I threw together a wishlist computer the other day on newegg and the cards could support the 2560x1600 resolution, but then I looked at monitors, and even if I built that, I wouldn't be able to afford the monitors to take advantage of it. So I'm going to scale it down a bit.

Copper has better conductivity though Carbuncle.Tweeek said: » Bahamut.Jetackuu said: » digital cable is a digital cable yo, like people trying to say the gold plated ends on hdmi cables are better... audiophiles don't use gold plated because of better sound quality they use it because they're resistant to corrosion. the only thing people need to keep in mind is that you're connecting gold plated to gold plated connectors to minimize chances for galvanic corrosion. saying there is no upside or advantage to gold plated connectors is ignorant. This creates long lasting equipment, and best user experience; no matter the facet |
