Sub or Dub?
I feel all my anime subbed in braille, it's all the rage!
If the dub is tolerable and good enough to watch, hell yeah I'm watching the dub. it depends on the context of the story too though (japanese setting, foreign setting, etc)
Subs if the english translation makes me facepalm beyond belief. Dubs unless it's intolerable. If I wanted to read, I'd just get the manga version.
Then you have some dubs that are just so terrible that they're actually the best because of how ridiculously funny they are. For example. Malaysian dbz start at 2:25 Lol I could watch the entire series in this dub Sylph.Tigerwoods said: » Dubs unless it's intolerable. If I wanted to read, I'd just get the manga version. Some are better in english, usually anything with a western setting or tone (Cowboy Bebop). On the other hand, mainly japanese settings (high school comedies like Lucky Star or Azumanga Daoih) I prefer in with subs.
And then there are some that I can take either way so I'll usually go with the one I heard first. Stuff with a lot of comedy (as in jokes) is pretty much impossible to watch dubbed because the jokes can't really be translated.

Unless of course the jokes are added via the dub and make the show watchable. IE Ghost Stories http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_Stories_%28anime%29#ADV_dub Subs
all the good anime are only in Japanese anyways. Besides, it helps me practice my listening comprehension =3 Most of the dubs I've heard are just horrid anyways. for the most part i will watch with dubs if available. though i have no real issue with subs... usually. something like hellsing, baccano, cowboy bebob i can absolutely not watch in Japanese. like many have said, things with a Japanese setting i usually prefer in subs, though some things with upbeat comedy (lucky star) or extreme emotional scenes (clannad) i prefer English to get the full effect.
i have heard some crappy dubs before, but for the most part i think people go overboard in saying how bad dubs are in general. imo, i think they just think the Japanese is better simply cause... they don't understand it so they feel more like they are reading a book and can fill it in themselves. a lot of shows that get a bad rep with dubs (elfen lied) people will say the sub is so much better. but going off that same example, elfen lied gets a pretty bad rep for the Japanese voices as well. EDIT for extra note on hellsing. hear a lot of people say the dub is terrible. idk why but that really bugs me >.> why? is it more normal for an irish guy to speak japanese with no irish accent? same for english, german, and italian people... I actually don't think I've come across a bad sub (Japanese voices) yet. Well maybe one or two characters but nothing even close to the dubs I've watched at least. The only thing I can't stand in Japanese is Kugimiya Rie's tsundere roles because I *** hate that type of character >_>
Subs... I shouldn't have to explain myself. :|
I prefer subs 95% of the time.
Most is better in sub, except for maybe.....2 that I can think of.Cowboy Bebop and Excel Saga being the 2 good english ones.Hellsing had a good dub iirc (been so long since i watched it in english) but I've seen it so many times in japanese and I enjoy the subbed version alot.
to clarify on what i said though. i do agree subs are usually better. but i think dubs in general get an unreasonably bad rep. though again, there are some really bad dubs XD especially in older animes
It's pending on the show tbh. Cowboy Bebop is hands down better dubbed than subed...

I think the Japanese are better at it in anime because it's a real career there, they do LOTS of shows. The only good voice actors I've heard are normal actors getting paid a bunch for a game >.> Like the Mass Effect cast, Dragon Age etc. They do a really good job and I wish more people were like that. I just get disappointed that people don't do their best even if it's not a job they want to do. If they do well they'll get more jobs and eventually better ones.
I never got the dub hate. Yah there are examples like the entire goddawful cast of One Piece, and most of the actors in Sorcerer hunters. But with so many quality dub examples like Evangelion, Hellsing, Berserk, Elfen Lied, the Kenshin movie "Betrayal", and screw trying to grab the same subtlety from Ulquiorra's smoothness in a language I don't know, that dubs serve me quite well.
I feel like the problem isn't that the voices are dubbed, it's that there has to be some ridiculous pandering to the American media to dumb ***down and make it cruder.
It's not like I have a problem with a show being in another language, I *** love Pokemon in Swedish, it's that most are so poorly done that I don't bother because I know I'll just end up disappointed and annoyed.

obvious example but regardless Bismarck.Patrik said: » to clarify on what i said though. i do agree subs are usually better. but i think dubs in general get an unreasonably bad rep. though again, there are some really bad dubs XD especially in older animes Wow Sanji sounds horrible
i dont mind dubs as long as they not made by 4kids down with 4kids hope they loose there lawsuit with TV tokyo
I'd watch the entire funimation dub if it were to speed up, but I watched 190+-511 because of this reason. I got too impatient. |
