Wait... Mariane.... you gave me an Idea.... what if they are not doing this survey for the purpose of killing the ps2.... what if they are considering to make 11 for ps3? :O!!!

This is what i think, its to see how many ps2 players also play on ps3 and to see how many play on ps3 only.

Trying to see if theres money to be made by making a ps3 version.

The PS2 is a disease that needs to be cut and cauterized for the long term health of this game. They're already running out of HDD space and have hit walls on a lot of features in the game that I'm sure everyone playing would like to see expanded.

I looked and looked ... Someone on the official forum was using that text in a custom made picture of Prishe ranting. It was CUTE.

Too bad I could not find it anymore D:

Guy walks over to stack of used ps2 consoles!
Clerk walks over to the guy!
Guy: "I'm looking for a replacement ps2, I use it to play ffxi."
Clerk: "These aren't the consoles yours looking for! I beleive you need an xbox360."
Guy: "I think your right I am looking for an xbox360!"

I have a feeling they might be considering using the FFXIV engine (Crystal tools/White engine) to retool FFXI for the PS3 instead of releasing XIV on the PS3...

You probably remember a file called "DANCER.PEX" from the PS2 updates... Dancer engine is the high polygon engine that was used on the character creation screen for both the PC and PS2 versions. 360 uses a silly bunch of sorry poorly made WMV videos for the character creation screen. Well for now I can only dream of playing FFXI properly on a PS3 ... Let's hope it happens... :3

It's interesting how FFXI had Low poly and HI poly engines but FFXIV uses only high poly engine all the time.

high polygon FFXI yes, please.

I kinda suck with tech stuff. I meant make a ps3 version that could be downloaded. I guess I didn't realize how much work is involved in that?
I'd say they're still making enough money off us to quit re-hashing old zones, & have some of their programmers get to work on this.

just my opinion

I think they could implement a download only format for PS2 games if they wanted (for PSN) it does not exist yet and I believe it's because the PS2 processor is extremely complex. (This meaning why PS3s without the PS2 chips cannot play PS2 games as software only emulation is too slow for a decent/usable gameplay)

I'll try to explain in a simple way:

FFXI for Windows was heavy at the time it released because it draws the graphics it make using the CPU to draw them moves the whole buffer to the GPU memory. It works that way on the Windows version because that's exactly how a PlayStation2 works. It has a dumb but lightning fast GPU chip and the CPU has two extra cores (vector units) to work the 3D graphics.

To keep the code similar enough across all platforms they have to use the CPU to render the graphics on the PC and XBOX360 too.
And the XBOX360 has a limit of 512MB ram (which only about 450MB is allowed for the games to run with) as a additional source of headaches.

Dropping the PS2 would allow them to scrap the "CPU rendering" model to gain performance (by using the PC and XBOX360 GPUs to offload CPU use) but then again, I DOUBT they would bother re-programming the whole game engine for that... -___-;

If you play World of Warcraft you will notice it has a lower CPU need that that of FFXI, but it's because WoW is a native Windows game, not using wonky software rendering for the screen drawing ... :)

I don't understand - don't they know what clients their users are utilizing to connect? Seems like a huge oversight to not have that data already.
I don't think they would be able to tell since the actual connection is not done before you are in the PoL viewer. Once your in the viewer the connection all read the same way regardless of platform. This also gives them the info on who has access to other methods.

I severely doubt there will be any major graphical overhauls to FFXI, even if they do drop PS2 support. I would be very happy with just some more content and inventory space... and a full auto translate.

Personally I wouldn't want to shell out $250(?) for a consoule that I would only play one game on... No idea if the Xbox version of the game is even easy to find any more either.

Completely offtopic but I feel like typing this: ;)

They could give us the feature of adding words to the dictionary (the current feature for JP people obviously don't work with auto translate as it's just meant to optimize typing in Japanese language) but because of how Japanese input works, they're allowed to "save" words on something called "user dictionary" in the ATOK/IME (IME means Input Method Editor) program as sometimes find a ideogram for a certain meaning is too slow for efficient typing.

The PS3 has a user dictionary system for English where it learns the words you use frequently and store then to be used in an auto-complete system (I think similar to that of the iPHONE I suppose ...)

I am currently on ps2 mainly because the graphics suck with using ps2 discs on a ps3 and hd tv..want to keep my pc clear of ffx1 or any game that can be used on another system. 360? I have no problem finding a copy ...have bought from ebay in the past and still do as I dont need it new ..the codes for my account are already registered. It would be nice if SE would release a disc with upgraded graphics etc for ps3...it looks crappy (ps2 disc on ps3) as it stands. As far as 360,,,free up the hd some and save ur ffxi on it instead of loading the disc each time.

I don't think the majority of the playerbase is asking for a new engine, it's a dream never meant to come true. What people is asking for is more inventory, new areas, no reskins, new content.

But Ultima Online is a great example of what can be done with an old game:

Wikipedia said:

Ultima Online: Kingdom Reborn client
Screenshot from Ultima Online: Kingdom Reborn.

Ultima Online: Kingdom Reborn was announced in August 2006 and was released August 27, 2007.[21] The new client, according to the Ultima Online team at Electronic Arts, was created for the purpose of modernizing the game's look, making it easy to add new content without backsliding through outdated and outmoded art, while maintaining the niche market as an MMORPG that can be run on lower-end computers. Electronic Arts has referred to the Ultima Online: Kingdom Reborn client as "2.5d," meaning that it was written in 3d and then effectively backslid into 2d to make it, in theory, easier for lower-end computers to run. The client is available as a free download for current players of the game.

Statements made by Electronic Arts originally stated that the Ultima Online: Kingdom Reborn client would replace the long-standing Ultima Online client. However, at the first of several Electronic Arts-sponsored players' conventions referred to as "UO Town Meetings," in Atlanta, Electronic Arts representatives suggested that the two clients would exist side-by-side until about 80% of the players had switched over to the new client. The support for this client is ended on September 9, 2009, to streamline the patch process prior to the release of the Ultima Online: Stygian Abyss expansion.[22]

Long story short: they released an "upgraded" client that modernized the look of the game. I have no technical competence to say this can be done to ffxi too, but the tenth anniversary is approaching...

Probably just market research for the new MMO they're releasing next year, or even feedback as if it's worth releasing FF14 on the PS3 or 360.

I wouldn't expect a grand overhaul of the game if PS2 support dropped. At most we will get reskins of everything we have now and maybe more mini expansions. Imo SE isn't going to take the time or money into doing all of that or making a new grand expansion. XIV is out, at this point they are just baiting us along with little pieces of this and that until we realize its the same ***we had before.

The PS2's RAM is an incredibly major bottleneck for FFXI. It's what keeps us capped at 80 inventory slots per bag, safe, etc. as the most prominent example.

The HDD isn't all used, but they can't use more than the partition given to them by Sony. Due to legal things that I once knew but forgot, something about the way the PS2's HDD is formatted to prevent piracy or something, Sony has to go and change the partition allocated to FFXI for SE to be able to take advantage of much more space than they've already used. HDD limitations is as much a valid issue as the horrible RAM.

This isn't about graphics, it's about basic game functions that are legitimately crippled by the PS2's lack of power and accessibility.

The PS2 RAM shouldnt be an issue as the game was coded for PS2. The partition for XI on the PS2 HDD is the same size as the partition on the 360 HDD so its not just a PS2 issue.

Yea... Cause a game designed pre 2002 hasn't evolved enough to grow out of the system it was developed for...

If they really want to kill the ps2 they just have to give PC users something that ps2 users don't get... Everyone willing or able to switch over probably will and they can see just how much will be lost.
