Wait... Mariane.... you gave me an Idea.... what if they are not doing this survey for the purpose of killing the ps2.... what if they are considering to make 11 for ps3? :O!!!
I have a feeling they might be considering using the FFXIV engine (Crystal tools/White engine) to retool FFXI for the PS3 instead of releasing XIV on the PS3...
You probably remember a file called "DANCER.PEX" from the PS2 updates... Dancer engine is the high polygon engine that was used on the character creation screen for both the PC and PS2 versions. 360 uses a silly bunch of sorry poorly made WMV videos for the character creation screen. Well for now I can only dream of playing FFXI properly on a PS3 ... Let's hope it happens... :3
It's interesting how FFXI had Low poly and HI poly engines but FFXIV uses only high poly engine all the time.
high polygon FFXI yes, please.
@ Mariane
I kinda suck with tech stuff. I meant make a ps3 version that could be downloaded. I guess I didn't realize how much work is involved in that?
I'd say they're still making enough money off us to quit re-hashing old zones, & have some of their programmers get to work on this.
just my opinion
I think they could implement a download only format for PS2 games if they wanted (for PSN) it does not exist yet and I believe it's because the PS2 processor is extremely complex. (This meaning why PS3s without the PS2 chips cannot play PS2 games as software only emulation is too slow for a decent/usable gameplay)
I'll try to explain in a simple way:
FFXI for Windows was heavy at the time it released because it draws the graphics it make using the CPU to draw them moves the whole buffer to the GPU memory. It works that way on the Windows version because that's exactly how a PlayStation2 works. It has a dumb but lightning fast GPU chip and the CPU has two extra cores (vector units) to work the 3D graphics.
To keep the code similar enough across all platforms they have to use the CPU to render the graphics on the PC and XBOX360 too.
And the XBOX360 has a limit of 512MB ram (which only about 450MB is allowed for the games to run with) as a additional source of headaches.
Dropping the PS2 would allow them to scrap the "CPU rendering" model to gain performance (by using the PC and XBOX360 GPUs to offload CPU use) but then again, I DOUBT they would bother re-programming the whole game engine for that... -___-;
If you play World of Warcraft you will notice it has a lower CPU need that that of FFXI, but it's because WoW is a native Windows game, not using
wonky software rendering for the screen drawing ... :)

this one? :P
Ya that one ... :D (Prothescar had it posted inside of a "SPOILER" button a few posts ago...)
