What are you on about?

Adding more terms into the auto translate isn't about cost, it's about certain platforms not having the capability. Same with adding maps, newer HD fonts (Which they've done on certain platforms) and other things that have basically no cost and become impossible.

No-one is expecting a full remake at this point, but if you think removing the PS2 as a platform wouldn't improve certain aspects of the game, then you're sorely mistaken.

Removing ps2 support will allow them to do two things.

One, not have to spend dev time on an old crappy system and be required to release another version of the game compatible with old hardware each time there is a version update they must code for one more system. If you don't think this costs money...

Two, memory allocation. They can't add everything to the autotranslate nor can they allow us more than 80 inv while supporting the ps2. They have said it. The ps2 has a limited amount of memory addresses to allocate.

I don't care if they don't revamp the graphics. I just want more inv space primarily. The ps2 prevents this.

Graphics are fine. More inventory, more new areas/mobs/content.

I totally see them getting rid of a % of their playerbase(how small it is remains to be seen) just so you can get more inventory space.

Auto translate limitations are also a lame excuse. There's a limit indeed, but the limit is programmable. Square Enix is telling you a half truth on this one.

Here is how it works for japanese players:

We're given an special page on POL viewer where we can download updated dictionaries for the game. Then after we have them on the harddrive we can choose which ones we want loaded:

You can see I have four dictionaries installed and there's still some room left. Now that Tetramaster is gone I just have it's dictionary removed.

US and EU clients have dictionaries too but they're "hard wired" within the updates. No means to "select" what you want out of it.

If you try and argue that a ten year old system or whatever isn't holding a constantly evolving piece of software back...

The time+money argument is really the only thing I can agree with you. It indeed means they "waste" development time with the PS2 (lol the PS2 is the original code branch of the game so anythign was first developed on the PS2 then ported to the other versions with conversion tools) so I don't think it's that bad.

The inventory size is another artificial limitation introduced by them and does not really have much to do with memory because the space used by items in the inventory is measured in bytes, not kilobytes or megabytes.

Since they've being so generous with storage I can see them expanding the inv space to 99 soon.

I suspect the limit the engine for this game supports is 255 item slots but then that's me. Another thing they should fix but they never cared to is the XBOX360 issue with crowds. Poor coding on their part, honestly. >_>

Just face it people, If your still on a PS2, your a moron for not using today's technology plain & simple. You can buy a used pc for 100.00 & a new one for 300.00 to play this game.
SE wants to improve this game in the future & whoever is believing that the PS2 isn't holding this game back is sadly mistaken becuz not only is it hard drive space its the GPU/CPU of the PS2...its fu~~king old & obselete. You are confuseing RAM and disk space. The disk space has never been the issue, I couldn't find an actual number for how much ram the ps2 has but maybe this is related? IDK enough about computers to know if it is for sure or not.

This site was last updated in 2005 so the comparison to desktop and laptop are way out of date.

I am NOT. I didn't mention. Well the PS2 has 32 MEGABYTES of RAM on the main CPU (Emotion Engine) and TWO MEGABYTES of RAM on the IOP (I/O processor, which control inputs and the harddrive).

I know EXACTLY how a PS2 work because back in the day I worked on a PlayStation repair center. I also know that the PS2 has a transfer rate of EIGHT GIGABYTES per second of data from that PUNY 32MB of RAM to it;s GPU. Which is about twice what a AGP PC of it's time could do ...

Now I also understand we're in 2011 but I know they won't rework the game beyond cosmetic fixes. Also the PS2 hardware is dying out of aging so you don't really need to worry with me and other people using it as in no more than two years most consoles will be probably broken. My console is 11 years old and still works great.

Both use laptop SATA harddrives (I believe they are SATA150) with 5400 RPM.

Frankly I think they need to make the game less CPU intensive, even EVE Online (video card rapist) runs better than FFXI. ESPECIALLY while running two instances of Windower.

The PS2 is awesome but it is old. I can't argue with that.
If the PS2 must be dropped it will be dropped. Me ranting won't change anything, will it ? I just like to hook my USA PS2 on a TV and be able to play with it in a couch lol.

If they drop the PS2 support means that PS3 will be dropped at the same time as it's playing on the PS3 as a PS2 game.

I have a PC with is capable of playing XIV so I'm not without FFXI if it gets dropped. I was even poking Sehachan at the test server yesterday ... /wave Sehachan

The PS2's RAM is an incredibly major bottleneck for FFXI. It's what keeps us capped at 80 inventory slots per bag, safe, etc. as the most prominent example.

The HDD isn't all used, but they can't use more than the partition given to them by Sony. Due to legal things that I once knew but forgot, something about the way the PS2's HDD is formatted to prevent piracy or something, Sony has to go and change the partition allocated to FFXI for SE to be able to take advantage of much more space than they've already used. HDD limitations is as much a valid issue as the horrible RAM.

This isn't about graphics, it's about basic game functions that are legitimately crippled by the PS2's lack of power and accessibility.
