I'm confused, what's not to like about carries site?

I don't like the community on there at all. And I don't like how the makers of the site are pretty arrogant when people don't want to host dats. And I really don't like the way they jumped into XIdats shoes as soon as it closed without asking if it was ok with the community first.

How exactly were they going to "ask the community"? Also how did they jump into ffxidats shoes? You realize a lot of other websites tried to replicate ffxidats but didn't really succeed? At this point in the games life who really cares? Not a lot of people care about .dats anymore sadly. This is the best thing that is left out there to store all the .dat files people loved using/never used before.

I've already contacted 4 or 5 of the old dat posters from XIdats, just waiting for emails back at this point.

And yeah, I still don't like how strict his website is. He also offended a lot of the older dat modders when he uploaded peoples stuff without asking, and even has a post on the forum saying nothing will be removed no matter what.

As for XI dying, Eh. People still enjoy making dats even if they don't play.

And I'm done discussing the other forum too.

Yeah? Well some people actually enjoy having .dats, if it was that way then nobody would get to use them because none of the .dat developers still play anymore for most part. Good luck getting w/e with this ***started, I doubt it will get off the ground lol.

I made an exact post like his a few months back asking what people are using now, what they think we should do and where should go and it turned into a flame fest because people were so annoyed they had to make a "hello" post in a intro thread to access .dats. What do you suggest we do then? I honestly don't see people w/much interest in this.

I've actually created quite a few .dats myself over the years, and so I'm not at all resistant to having such a section on the site.

Problem is, I wouldn't dream of uploading or re-using anyone else's existing .dats without their consent, and I have no contact information for the vast majority.

We could start over from scratch, but I'm just not sure there's enough users left in FFXI to create a volume of .dats high enough to fill out the new section.

I see no reason why it has to be overly crowded. Even FFXIdats had a lot of completely unused categories.

Would still be a nice hobby for myself and maybe a few others.

Perhaps if we gain enough publicity we could essentially have a joint collaboration with other sites or providers of dats as not to have the community divided between various sources.

Also, as already stated in the OP I think, everyone who's played FFXI more than likely has heard of or uses FFXIAH.

Indeed. It would available to the general mass of FFXI users/players rather than specifically targeted to those seeking dat creation and distribution. Sounds like a win win to me.

I've contacted a few of the old members from XIdats to see if they minded their work being uploaded (And credited to them of course) and provided a contact email. If I hear back from them I'll let y'all know.

I feel the same way. I also don't care how some of my stuff and Taheenaa's is up there without credit being attributed.

On the plus side, I saved as many guides from fxidats as i could and still have them up on thegoblintailor if in the future someone would like to work them onto this site.

Since the demise of FFXIDats, most of the dat mods have been floating around on various sites. Most dat modders (that were hardcore in to doing them) had their own site of sorts somewhere. A lot of mods can be found with some decent searching. When I started running TheGoblinTailor! a few years back, it was really just to have an alternative place for peeps to post and share their stuffs. After finding out FFXIDats was leaving, Mog and myself then did our best to save as many guides as we could, but without much time it was hard. But harder to just sit and watch all of those guides disappear that so many people worked so hard on.

I still run that site, I still keep on it as far as spam n' such goes. I don't always get to keep up on the FFXI news yadda yadda, and I haven't modded a .dat in forever...I'm not by any means awesomepossum! But I find them fun to do, I enjoy doin 'em.

I can't speak for other modders, but...

As far as straight up blatantly downloading other people's work, and then immediately reposting it to caarrie.org, I'd have to say, that's not so cool. It's available for download already on it's original site. If things were taken and obvious credit was given to the original author, then maybe... but if I create a .dat and post it on my site, that I run, then that's probably where I would like to keep it, in all honesty. Or at least ask or state somewhat politely that you'd like to take it and post it elsewhere. Not just take it and come back and say "Oh, by the way I took your ***."

It felt more like a - "Well here's my shot to take over! I need to find as many .dats as I can and that I like and download 'em and repost so it looks likes I gots lotsa stuffs to dl!" - kinda situation.

Not hatin'(really)...I just feel things maybe could have been handled a little better, maybe with a smidge more tact.

People of the .dat mod community were already upset with losing the main source of, not only .dat files, but mass amounts of information on the subject.

That's one of the main reasons I dislike his site. If there was to be a section here on AH I'd like it to be completely devoid of that sort of attitude. If you want to post something then do so, if you don't you shouldn't feel pressured into doing it.

The possibility of making a new community of modders with the tutorial section is what I think the goal should be too. I realised how hard it is to find a decent website with all the information consolidated so I'd love to see that again.

If we were to host such a thing, we'd want it to be chalk-full of content. (Without stealing.) That's what we strive for this site to be about.

We're not going to try and crowd out competition just for the sake of being all things to all people. It's why we've historically been so willing to link off-site to content we feel other folks do better.

There isn't much value in us putting up a .dat section that just collects tumbleweeds. (There's actually negative value for our image to have empty or unused sections.) And it may in fact actually damage the .dat-making community by spreading it out even more.

That being said, if there's enough demonstrable interest to generate a critical mass of self-sustaining content, and serve as a uniquely valuable centralized resource for the community, I'm sure we would seriously consider it.

We saved all of the guides@here... in hindsight (if there was more notice before potentially losing those guides) we would have saved every single image in every single guide that was made, and then basically would have had to remake every single guide from scratch to guarantee that those images would never be lost.

Some of the images have been lost, but the guides are still there. It's just a matter of us having to sit down (and find the mass amount of time) and pretty much remake all of the lost images that were linked to now broken image hosting accounts, etc.

It's a huge job, and it's something that I know has to be done. We just need to find the time. :/

Some of the guides are still hoppin' as some folks have kept their image hosting accts alive (like Everdyne, tyˆˆ etc) and some folks like Nomido (ありがとうございます! ˆˆ) have so kindly re-compiled their guides and allowed us to link to their source.

The information is all there, should peeps need help. If it's not there, questions can always be asked. We'll always help where we can.

I tried registering with the Caarrie site and kept getting rebuffed because I "did not answer the verification questions correctly". They're not complex questions.... so I'm not really sure what the deal is.

EDIT: So one of the verification questions is: "What does ffxi stand for?" The site doesn't let you register unless you get the answer exactly right. The "correct" answer?

I'm tempted to set up an imageshack for dats (datshack?) and then offer the domain and all data lock stock and barrel to you if it showed enough usage, but I don't think it'd get enough traffic.

I'd say the dat community already got spread to thin in the wake of ffxidats demise. The only really lively place isn't lively for its dats but for its NSFW content. Other sites are either have ***/retard admins or low traffic or both. Most of the talent has moved on from XI, and it makes me kinda sad.

I'm game for supporting people with information should they ask it, but I don't mod much myself anymore outside of my occasional weapon tweaks (I did say I was gonna take the Taru onion-hair and put it on a Galka sometime though...).

That said, if the community somehow came back to a similar fashion how it was on XIDats, then my perspective might change and I might take up an active modding role again. From an aesthetic point of view, I don't like how the Caarie site is set up compared to how the forum is organized here. Just something about the way it looks and is organized bugs me, but I don't know what in particular it is...

I think it would be great to have a section to put stuff. I've never minded people uploading the DATs I made, as long as they give me credit. That being said only a couple of my things have made it to other sites, and I would be more than happy to help fill out the section here with all of my stuff because I still have all of mine. I'm so glad my guide that I spent a long time making is still being used somewhere. That is the one main reason why I never removed anything off my photobucket. I'm not so interested in making dats anymore, but I am interested in the dat modding community. I loved going to FFXIDats.com every day and seeing peoples new works or their works in progress, or helping people just starting out and such. If this section would be made, I would definitely come in and help if people needed it.
