The DS version is ***simply because it takes what should be a 15 second battle and turns it into an overly elaborate special-effect fest. Instead of taking advantage of what could be an amazing remake while addressing what flaws the original had, it simply took the same exact game and added prettier graphics. There should be no reason in this day and age why half the events play exactly the same, or why the great kingdom of Baron still only consists of 14 villagers and five buildings. A complete cop-out and waste of resources.
There's a time and place for all graphics, and the combination of 3D and FF4 was not one of them.

the DS version was done by the same team as the DS FF3 remake, anyone ever play the original FF3? i know it wasn't ever released in NA or outside of Japan for that matter.

That was my issue with Golden Sun: Dark Dawn. Some animations were simply time consuming.

There is only so much they can do... You are asking for a completely remade game. If they changed so much you would get all the old farts with their nostalgia glasses having their panties in a bunch. The game was old... cheesy graphics and script was all they had to work with.

The resolution of the SNES side is probably half of what it should be, and the DS side is about double. Yeah, that's a fair comparison.

Have you played the original Golden Sun games? They weren't exactly split second attacks.

They certainly weren't as long as they were in DD, though.
Don't get me started on the over-exaggeration of the summons.

Um not much changes. There shouldn't be an argument over detail. The DS is clearly superior in detail.

I'm confused, you want less detail in summoning and animation? Do you realize you can skip the CS all together once you see it the first time by simply pressing a button?

Yes I'm aware that you could, but it's the concept. Some games simply try too hard to be flashy.

Eh nah not really but I feel its an important aspect, especially in this day and age. Not to say that gameplay or story should take a back-seat, they obviously come first. It's the icing on the cake though.

I would love a completely remake game actually. Let the old farts keep their original copies, not like they would suddenly burst into flames or something.
Why bother though? Everyone's gonna eat up rehashed ports anyways and still make bank.
Since Golden Sun: DD was brought up, I thought the game was sorta poopy but man, I always love how they pull off eight party members. Love switching them out seamlessly, too bad the game never really pushes you to do so unless you're up against

I completely agree, I would love one as well. Just saying, look at this thread and that is what it would come down to basically. All the old *** with nostalgia glasses cursing the remake.
Yes I thought Golden Sun sucked too. Mainly because they completely trashed the old characters and instead created complete clones of them and called them children of the heroes.

It's the icing on the cake though. i disagree completely about graphics in video games in this day and age. look at the most popular games around the web like on facebook and kongregate, or mobile like android or iphone/pad. the super popular ones are clearly not about graphics and most look like 32 bit graphics.
edit: look at WoW >.> lol, those graphics are ***and that game has quite the popularity.

He was asking my personal opinion, that I gave. To me, as an art, it is an important -aspect-. Didn't say it makes or breaks a game, I also gave more reasons than graphics as to why DS version is superior.

I don't really see one more detailed than the other. It's simply 2D vs 3D. AND that's the SNES version, the GBA and PSP versions look loads better.

As for graphics, I think it's all about helping the player feel immersed, which obviously works different for individuals.
I mean, personally, I'll just go with whatever works. FF4's 3D models and effects were great looking, but in my case, it really didn't change how I see FF4. Everyone still stands around in rows taking turns awkwardly, swinging their weapons at invisible ghosts in both versions. So 2D or 3D wasn't the deal breaker here, it was just animation.
There's probably a few other factors out there that could be improved on to help the player feel immersed, regardless of the quality of graphics. Small stuff like your party members trailing behind you, or equipment visually appearing on your character model really helps. Some games have been doing that for a while now, and it looks great.
And of course, there's art direction that transcends most things, but that's an entirely different subject.

Leviathan.Draylo said: I'd advise buying real glasses and put the nostalgia ones down. What part is more detailed? If there are more details, there's more information... but where? The eyeballs are almost identical. The wings, the mouth, the teeth, the little claws, they're all there. The flame fang is actually LESS defined in the DS version in my opinion, but with the addition of some smoke I guess we can cancel that out? Cecil is probably made up of as many pixels in both versions making detail something he is sorely lacking no matter what version we're talking about. The mast on the ship deck and some rope is the only thing we've gained. And if background is your thing, the GBA/PSP versions are second to none. We can do one of those comparisons too.
I think you're wearing some kind of glasses that 3D always seems better because it's 3D and not because it's actually good. Probably because you grew up playing first generation 3D games. Let's call them nostalgia glasses.

The mobs actually move.
Look at the scenery in both pics, tell me which is more defined.
Waves around the characters feet in the water.
Clothing moves when they cast.
Everything is more detailed, don't be silly.
Just downloaded this for psp today. Game takes me waaaay back, but the entirely new story set years after the original with all your favorite old characters all grown up is the best part! Anyone else tried it yet?
