I know. I have plenty of southern relatives.
I was just making a point that there's nothing wrong with calling it what people want to call it, and that the contents of the drink really have no bearing on what it's called.

Edit: This is based solely on how annoying my relatives in NW PA talk and pop is one of their frequently used words.

I've never heard anyone refer to Mountain Dew as a coke, other dark soda, yes but not Mountain Dew.
that's still less annoying than "pop".
"Soda Pop" is acceptable however.
edit: also it's contents do have a bearing: that of course unless you're an uneducated redneck hick. they need to put some sort of sterilizing agent in deer meat or something.

i live in the south in a "coke" area, it's still soda unless you're talking about coke/pepsi/dr. pepper
My relatives live in central Alabama. They call everything Coke. Mountain Dew included. (Not saying everyone there does, but my relatives and the other people I've met when visiting all did.)
I guess I don't really see how "Soda" is an acceptable shortening of the term "Soda pop" but simply "Pop" isn't. Though I do agree, it doesn't have the best sound to it. I'm tired. I don't know why I'm even trying to sort it out. I already said I'm more likely to call it soda than anything else.

Coke/Pepsi/RC etc is all 'coke', clear drinks I'll specify by name, if I want 7up, I'll say 7up, if I want Sprite, I'll say Sprite.. Other sodas such as Ginger Ale, Orange Soda, etc is 'soda'.
But it depends on the context too.. The above is true when I'm telling my wife what to get me to drink from a store/restaurant or whatever.. When I'm telling my wife to hand me a drink that's already at our house it's always just 'coke'.. (well you know unless we have a bunch of different types, which is pretty rare) and the above is NOT true..

You'd be better off putting it in cheap beer and well probably Coke.
