Trying to explain the importance of thermal compound to my parents...

Parents: "why do you need it, doesn't the fan keep it from overheating?"

Me: "yes a fan helps but the compound helps ensure the heat is dissipated to the heat sink/fan appropriately."

Parents: "why do you need it, the CPU you have now does just fine without it."

Me: "Um... the CPU I've been using for the last five years HAS THERMAL COMPOUND!"

Me: "If I don't get a decent thermal compound, you run the risk of that new processor you just bought me messing up or worse, overheating and burning out."

Parents: "still sounds like a waste to me."

Me:

Your problem is in trying to explain technology to parents. There are some out there who get it, but for the most part it's a lost cause.

EDIT: Also, unless you're OCing it, the ***from Best Buy does okay.. I've been using Artic Silver 5 since my first time putting the stuff on myself, but the last time I needed it, I needed it then and couldn't wait for Newegg to send it to me (there is no where anywhere near here to buy it in a store) so I went with their stuff.. Need to put it into a seperate container (I used a lid from a bottle) and stir it because the ingredients had started separating in the container.

But it works fine, I'm not running hot or anything.

Yeah, I'm the only one in my entire family that's a geek or even understands technology. But, I just got a new processor and stuff ordered for x-mas and I forgot to get some good thermal paste. So I'm explaining on why I need to buy it, well trying to explain.

Just tell them it's as necessary to a computer as oil is to a car.

The radiator helps in cooling off the engine as the fan/heatsink does in a computer, but without oil the friction drives the heat into overload, same thing happens in a computer more or less (except the heat isn't friction generated) without that extra step, the cooling system can't keep up.

i feel like i'm in the same boat as you.

just turned in a project for my artificial intelligence class and the professor absolutely hates me (for reasons unknown to me). My final exam is tomorrow at 7:30am and most likely if I don't ace this test or make it look like I put in a really good effort. she's going to fail me and curve the rest of the class.

Shepherd's pie for dinner. :-) I always forget how much I love shepherd's pie til I make it again. With cider and my husband and my pups, it's just a perfect evening!

Oh god I can't stop laughing! We need leg seals and we're helping an old pal out with a couple Sobeks, right. So we farmed up the bugard things and popped the Minax bugard, and this other party that was right there had some ninja who was running up to pop at the same time. Big deal, it pops again pretty darn quick.

Anyways, so in the middle of the fight, the other party's ninja sends a tell to my husband and says "I hope you *** die." So we lol'd a little that he was so upset over the Minax bugard, of all things. So we gm'd him, maybe a chat with a red demigod will help him cool his jets, lol.

And then we finished killing Minax, and it turned out we didn't even need the KI. xD We had them from last time we came in. We made an emo ninja cuss out my husband for nothing!

Oh dang, that's too much. For nothing! Maybe I'm way too easily amused, but dang that made me laugh!

Awww Slip, you have to admit, it's a little funny that after all that fuss we didn't even need the KI. Tehehehe!! xD

I'm not that easily amused, but I am pretty easily amused.. Things like that, I tend to not give a second thought to.. If the person really got under my skin, I'd probably sit there camping against him until he left, then I would be amused.
