Here's my stupid question--why do all the WotG NPCs talk about "Vanadiel of 20 years ago" being some long-ago far-away time period?

Clearly it's when Ajido-Marujido and Excenmille were children, but we all know a Vanadiel day is 58 Earth-minutes or so long no? And there are 24 hours to the Vanadiel day and (stupidly) 360 days to a Vanadiel year...

http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Time

...so "20 years ago" = 288 earth days ago. That's like early March of last year no? :p I know that seems so long ago (omg before Visions of Abyssea was released--that long ago!) but it really isn't no? :p

By extension, some characters who've been around since 2003/2004 are older than Methuselah and Rip Vanwinkle and have been around since the Vanadiel Stone Age. LOL ;_;

Perhaps all NPCs had some sort of out of body experience within our realm of time.

Time is creepy in Vana'diel.

According to Bastok's missions, Gumbah is 20 years old.

On the other hand... San d'Oria (S)'s quest line mention a baby Trion.

I'm more wondering... why did WotG have to resort to convoluted time-travel and alternate universes? The main missions were pretty clear on how it all worked as you're not simply traveling through time, you're returning to Vana'diel's "prime" diverging period. This is obvious since nothing you do in the past directly affects the present anyways (clearly a gameplay thing here).

Another way time is weird, is that it proves Vana'diel is flat.

If you travel anywhere in Vana'diel, it'll be the same day time as anywhere else. Only possible if either: Vana'diel is flat, or the entire explorable area we have is one time zone meaning that the planet is freakin massive.

Time Travel/parallel universes are just SE's way of justifying reusing game assets to lower the budge.

Also, Vana'Diel has moved through "Ages" of technological advancement!

2003-2006 "The Accuracy and Intelligence Age": Accuracy and INT ONRY!! People who created separate sets for Weapon skills were prosecuted, and often burned as witches.

2007-2008 "The Haste and Skill Age": Brought about by the invention of a mythical device lost to antiquity, known only as the "Wal*mart Turban". The discovery that skill effects accuracy (Both magical and physical) Happened early in this age.

2009-2011(Present) "The X-hit Age": As technology (lolgear) improves, we come to the realization that some compromises can be made in Haste, accuracy or attack, to lower the amount hits it takes to be able to perform a weapon skill.

2010-2011(Present) "The Atma Age": Much like the internet of the Information age, these intangible but indispensable buffs have created a dependence in the population, who now no longer remember what it was like without it.

Ramblings aside:

How is it that my character can hold a Greatsword that has to weigh at least 170kilos over his head, but lacks the upper body strength to pull himself up a ledge about 1meter high, forcing me to run a 20mile marathon to get to the spot that should've taken .32 seconds to reach?

Yes, this was stated in the update notes that accompanied release of Heroes of Abyssea.

Part 2 - How exactly do you pronounce Elanabelle?

Think of the name as a compound word: Elana-belle.

Elana is "Ah-LAH-na"

As in this:

Belle is just "bell"

Oh ***. I actually made that exact face. Left hand and everything.

Also...

What determines which dagger/axe/sword goes in what hand when dual wielding? I see things like "XXXX would be a sweet off-hand dagger" and I just pretend that I know what's going on.

Highest damage in main hand, off hand is generally something that has good stats, low delay and relatively high damage for such a low delay.

Tyvm!

The reason for doing this is because your weaponskill damage is based on your main hand weapon's damage.

That is the correct pronounciatio.
Meme is supposed to be analagous to "gene" in that it's a unit of cultural of information, hence the long "e."

I happened to have read Dawkins' book for a class several years ago, but I also knew it was on the Wikipedia page because I've had the discussion on "how to pronounce" meme several times before lol.

Oddly this is something that comes up frequently >_>
