I was just curious, does anyone else out there celebrate VJ day? I know Rhode Island is the only state that still declares it as a holiday (I get work off lol) The other 2 states, don't remember who they were recently dropped it :( And If you do celebrate it do you treat it as a mini 4th of July?
Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day, also known as Victory in the Pacific Day, or V-P Day) is a name chosen for the day on which the Surrender of Japan occurred, effectively ending World War II, and subsequent anniversaries of that event. The term has been applied to both the day on which the initial announcement of Japan's surrender was made in the afternoon of August 15, 1945 in Japan and to August 14, 1945 where it is observed as V-J Day in the United States when it was announced because of time zone differences in the Western Europe, the Americas, the Pacific Islands, and Australia and to September 2, 1945 when the formal signing of the surrender was made. The name V-J Day had been selected by the Allies after they named V-E Day for the victory in Europe.
Celebrate a war none of our generation had anything to do with?
HELL YEAH!
In all seriousness, other national holidays become a catch-all for this kind of stuff.
I can understand celebrating it if you were around for it...but you seem like you are celebrating it in a "just cuz" fashion.
I get an overwhelming feeling that you are being very facetious for some reason OP.

Well...if it weren't for the US victory over Japan and the indoctrination to US cultural values that followed, there never would have been anime (as we know it) because the original mangaka were trying to emulate Disney character designs.
And without anime, there wouldn't have been Pokemon. And without Pokemon, there wouldn't have been a Mankey (let alone Mudkip.) So the OP has reason to celebrate no? :p
Vinvv that was well played but can you give any legit reason to celebrate any holiday then "just cuz". Unless you believe in that big man in the sky. Not celebrating something just to be "different" is imo childish though (Vinvv don't take it personally but you seem the type to pride yourself on being a unique little snow flake for no other reason then different is cool" But I see your point regarding the fact I wasn't around for the surrender :p

never say never :P, if you'd had added the "as we know it" I'd have been OK with that.

"unique little snow flake"??
You confuse my OCD with pride good sir.
Me speaking my mind is "trying to be unique" pft.
We've all watched Fight Club, and face it. Chuck P has WAY better work than that.
edit: i'm one of those "every day is exactly the same" type of person for the most part.
I'm against a good deal of our national holidays anyway just because it's all a sales gimmick anymore.
also, no offense taken.
But it is awesome that you think i'm cool.
People love vajayjay more then historic events that changed history, completely understandable, lets make Aug 12th VAJJAYJAY Day ! Where bottomless for woman is a must if you meat standards and vagina piranha are not allowed.
Why not celebrate VJ and VE (Victory in Europe) day? We didn't have to be there for the signing of the Declaration of Independence to celebrate it every July 4th. You can celebrate things that you weren't involved in.
Both these days were momentous occasions, marking the defeat of forces that threatened the freedom of entire nations. Around 22 to 25 million military died in WWII and 40 to 52 million civilians.
Celebrate the accomplishments of The Greatest Generation, that preserved freedom and democracy for many nations!

Anime started in Japan in the early 20th century, as early as 1917. Walt Disney was similarly doing his thing in the 20's and 30's. The cross-culture animation influences and work on both sides predated WW2 by nearly 30 years, and has nothing to do with "indoctrination" to "US cultural values" as a result of the war.

I wouldn't say Japan was decimated, the Fire bombs in Tokyo were horrible as well as obviously the nuke, but by no means was it a decimation. :)

The only thing America contributed to society in regards to movies/anime was the obsession with whole "everyone lived happily ever after" bs.

Jaerik what were original animes about? During WWII obviously propaganda graphic novels became extremely popular (I have a few american ones from my dad) Did Japan also have similar graphic novels?

Probably.
How is it so hard to understand that people make cartoons on the other side of the world?
