Merits

Category 1: 5/5 Store TP, 5/5 Meditate or 5/5 Zanshin.

•5/5 Zanshin is more DPS, but 5/5 Meditate has more utility/potential if used optimally depending on the content.

Category 2: 5/5 Overwhelm, 5/5 Ikishoten.

•These are too good to pass up.

Sub Jobs

SAM is very unique in the sense that it can sub whatever it wants with minimal impact on what the job does. This is because SAM gets Hasso regardless of sub while other 2H DDs are pretty much required to sub SAM for hasso in DPS scenarios. The freedom for SAM to sub whatever it wants comes in very handy in a lot of content and expands on what an already great job can do.

SAM/DRG

WSDMG trait: Due to the 2019 DRG adjustments, DRG now gets WSDMG traits that work on all its of a WS. With SAM/DRG you get 1 tier in DRG's new WSDMG trait for 7%.

High Jump: A common problem these days is that DDs do too much damage and tanks can have trouble keeping hate. But with High Jump and Dirge, it's shocking how much DPS a SAM can put out w/o pulling hate. Especially amazing for content like DynaD wave3 where if a DD pulls hate it often means death.

Accuracy Traits: While not a ton of accuracy, it's worth mentioning and frees up some space to use better TP gear.

Starter Samurai Progression

99>all missions/RoV>RoE objectives>Omen/Ambu/Domain/Job Points/Reforge All Armor>SU3 Gear/R15 Masa/Master JP/+3 gear(+2 ambu)/Oseem Augments>10% WSDMG DM Augments

1) Get level 99 Samurai and finish all missions, especially Rhapsodies: BGwiki 1-119 Quickstart Guide

This sounds simple, but it's easily one of the most time consuming parts if you're a new to the game. The reason you rush to finish Rhapsodies of Vana'diel is because it until a myriad of CP/XP and other amazing bonuses. The reason you finish all the other storylines is because they grant a permanent 10% CP boost each, which you'll need later when you start CPing.

2)DO DOMAIN INVASION EVERY DAY! Finish up Intermediate RoE objectives and start merits: 119 Gear Guide

DO. DOMAIN. INVASION. While the event isn't much fun, the rewards you get from DI are very, very good. You can get Abj. gear from Escha, and Valorous gear that you'll need for your Fudo set later.

What to get from DI: Thrud Earring, Valorous set, Ryuo feet abj.

Fortunately, Records of Eminence gives a plenty of gear to work with as you progress. The ilv 119 "Bayld" gear/weapon you get from the Peacekeepers coalition is solid, but don't invest too much since as you progress a lot of this gear will be replaced.

3) Start grinding out Omen and Ambu AF+2 and Flamma, Hizu and Capes.

AF+2 priority is Hands>Legs>Body>Head>Feet.
Ambu priority is TP cape>WS cape>Flamma head +2>Flamma feet +2>Hizu legs +2>rest
Flamma priority is Head>Feet>Body>Legs>Hands

Masamune TP Sets:

Masamume is SAM's best weapon right now for nearly anything you can think of. If it's not, it's not very far behind. I highly suggest any serious SAM put full priority on making a Masa as soon as possible given it's the easiest Empy to make and gives the largest DPS increase of any weapon.

Masa R15 S tier for:
Fudo Spam.
Multi-step ending in Fudo.

Samurai -DT/Tanking set:

Pre-Ody Hybrid:
ItemSet 323899

Outdated now because of Ody, but will still get the job done until you can get clears.

Post-Ody RESIST Hybrid
ItemSet 381221

An all around great set for NOT DYING TO ANYTHING.
Best used in situations where you want to resist enfeebles and are at risk from both magic and physical damage.

Example: In D or VD Sahagin Ambu, You're at major risk from both Physical damage and getting stunned for a VERY LONG time.

Post-Ody Max PDT Hybrid
ItemSet 381222

Best used in situations where you're either not at risk of being enfeebled or it will be dealt with very quickly, but still at risk of taking massive physical damage you need to survive.

Example: You're fighting Scorpions in Shoel C on floor 4 and you have hate. You're not really at risk of getting enfeebled, but a Death Scissors or Wild Rage will probably 1shot you.

This tanking set has a great mix of every stat you'd want to survive without totally tanking your DPS ability.

Samurai WS Sets:

Most of SAM's WS damage comes from the first hit of its WS. This is a blessing and a curse at the same time. A blessing because you're able to stack a ton of WSDMG gear to boost the 1st hit's damage while also needing less accuracy in WS gear due to the 1st hit accuracy bonus on all physical WS. A curse because as any veteran SAM will tell you, when you miss, and believe me, YOU WILL MISS A LOT, you miss out on all that damage.

Tachi: Fudo, Kasha, Shoha:

ItemSet 274964

This set focuses all of its damage on the first hit of the WS, which receives a +100 accuracy bonus. Your overall goal is to stack as much WSD, STR as possible.

Valorous Augments: The crux of any Fudo set is how good your Oseem augments are. This will vary for everyone depending on your luck but some simple guidelines to follow are:

Taupe Augments: STR+15, WSDMG 4%. This should be your main focus, since taupe is cheaper and the easiest to farm/obtain. Focus only on getting WSDMG 4% and as much STR as possible, any acc/atk augment is icing on the cake.

Fern Augments: STR+10, WSDMG 5%. Much much harder to get this augment and more expensive too, but if you happen to see this, keep it.

Dark Matter Augments: WSDMG 7-10%. God-tier augments for Fudo. Generally, you need at least 7 WSDMG to beat a top tier Taupe/Fern augment.

If you want to set your SAM apart from the pack, getting top tier augments, especially Dark Matter augments is the best way to see the biggest increase, though it will cost you.

Tachi: Ageha

Ageha is incredibly powerful and generally under utilized. SAM's core weakness vs other heavy DD jobs like DRK, WAR and DRG is that is lacks tools to boost its attack outside of /war and berserk, but in today's XI you're punished heavily if you try to /war and you lose one of SAM's major strengths in being able to sub anything. Ageha makes up for this in a big way, but not without downsides.

ItemSet 373617

Tachi: Jinpu

Pre-Ody
ItemSet 373641

Post-Ody
ItemSet 381223

Stat focus should be High WSDMG and Magic Attack Bonus. DM augments on valorous are 40+ MAB and or WSDMG 8% or more. If no DM augments, use max augment Founder's set from Sinister Reign in the head/hands/feet slots.

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/646595992

As you can see in this Wave3 Mega clear, Tachi: Jinpu is SAM's most powerful WS in the entire game if buffed correctly and used on the proper mob. It's key to note that "buffed correctly" basically means: "Needs every OP buff and debuff in the game" but if you can manage that, Jinpu won't let you down.

Stats you need to cap:

Attack: SV Minuet(s), Chaos roll, Dia3/4 Fury and Ageha.
Accuracy: SV Mad(s) and accuracy food.
Magic Accuracy: Frazzle 3 and Wind Threnody II.
Magic Attack: Bolster Malaise, Acumen and Wizard's roll.
Multi-hit: Fighter's roll and an Ultimate GK. R15 Koga> R25 SU5

As you can see see, the amount of buffs you need is obnoxious and being short on any of them will drastically reduce the potency of Jinpu depending on what you're fighting.

The only practical thing I've used this setup on in endgame content is Dynamis Wave3 because you have a lot of characters to work with for buffs and most groups buff for Leaden damage. Outside of SV songs and bolster I've been really dissapointed with Jinpu numbers, which is why you don't see it being used the entire run.

SAM Multi-Step Skillchains

Frequently used Light SCs:

1) Fudo>Kasha(Fusion)>Shoha(Light)>Fudo(Double Light/Radiance)

SAM's bread and butter multi-step. If using Doji it will make Radiance. Ideal on NMs like Kei, Zerde and Dullahan VD Ambu.

2) Fudo>Fudo(Light)

Short and simple. Fudo is really strong and sometimes stuff dies before you can get a full 3 or 4 step off.

3) Shoha>Kasha(Light)>Fudo(Double Light/Radiance)

Frequently used Darkness SCs:

1) Rana>Fudo(Darkness)

2) Ageha>Jinpu()>Shoha(Gravitation)>Fudo(Darkness)

Great 4step Darkness that also applies Defense Down from Ageha. Very good when multi-stepping Maju and Marjami Delve Mega Boss.
