I have to admit that it's secretly hilarious to hear NA players try to pronounce Japanese gear, skills, etc.
I don't make a big deal out of it and rarely correct people. I'm not "that guy." Unless, of course you're a *** who likes to make fun of folks who don't speak English. At which point, it's open season. Those folks need to be corrected, and it's funny how really angry they get when you do. Other than that, I don't really care how anyway pronounces the areas. I'm sure I pronounce a few of them wrong too. Oh god..that reminds me of a friend of mine and the way he (tries) to pronounce Meriphataud Mountains. "Merro-fichuated Mountains". I would love to see an IPA rundown of game terms, especially the Sea mobs
I still hear people pronouncing Qufim as Kwiffim. As is having a pug NM spelled out for you won't do it.

I'm from Iowa as well, and I say roof like aloof, and creek like meek. And I want to strangle all Iowans who add an R sound to wash (warsh). Iowa too! You have to go more south to Missouri for the Warsh.. Strangely I say both roof and ruuf.. creek and crick.. dunno. lol I also say, if I were to actually SAY (which I don't) attohwa chasm like the Canadian 'Ottawa', lol. Asura.Bartimaeus said: I heard pigaches pronounced Pika-chichi's...lol Diabolos.Rydiya said: Oh god. I hate that too. I live in Washington, and my mother pronunces it Warsh-ing-ton. I just want to strangle her and small babies over that. Like say I've heard Bothell pronounce brothel. Chehalis pronounce um Chey-hall-is Kennewick prounounce ken-new-ick Heard Puyallup butchered like 50 different ways lol. Even tacoma gets mispronounced. Odlly enough no one messes up Vader even though like maybe 1k people live there lol i have a hard time pronouncing a majority of the areas and items in this game. not embarrassed to say but most of the words are a tad bit confusing to say.

I know ~nothing about Japanese culture, I just pronounce things how they make sense to me until I'm told otherwise.
Bastok: Bas-TOHK Sandoria: Sand-OR-ee-ah Qufim: KWIFF-um Pigaches: Pig-AH-cheese Dynamis: DIE-nam-us Those are probably all so terribly incorrect, lol. But I don't actually see how it matters, considering I really only say them in my head, anyways, almost never out loud. I've heard lots of different pronunciations for a lot of different places from my in-game friends on vent or telephone, but as long as we all know what we're all talking about, what does it matter? I don't care if people say 'American' words wrong, either, as long as I know what they mean. How do you get "-us" when it's an "is"? <_<
Bismarck.Dracondria said: How do you get "-us" when it's an "is"? <_< the pronunciation of "Hagun" at the end of this video, among other things
is a running joke in our ls Quetzalcoatl.Sectumsempra said: How does one say Pahluwan Quesadilla? fixed. <3 Quetzalcoatl.Dawnn said: that one actually is easy Nan-at-soo Say-ah no tah-chi Ruining my fun! I guess at least the Japanese names are phonetic, everything else is a hit or miss lol. Oh! Oh! and on Hagun, I think it's supposed to be pronounced

Heres a couple funny ones, my Real life friend used to say these and i laughed my *** off every time.
Gil ~ Well... Gil lol. G ~ Ill. He would say Jill. With a J. Was quite humurous. And San d'oria. Well. San ~ d ~ oria... He would say Sano~dria. We would bust his balls all the time. But he would never change how he said it. Its quite funny how we read it one way, say it and never change how we say it. I read Homam, and say Homan. I cant think of any others off the top of my head though >< I always miss-pronounce Valkurm to Valkrum. >.<
Japanese is really easy to pronounce. Every vowel is always the same no matter where in the word it comes.
a - ah, rhymes with "cot" i - ee, rhymes with "tea" u - oo, rhymes with "two" e - eh, rhymes with "meh" o - oh, rhymes with "toe" That's it. As long as you stick to those sounds, and don't try to use any American vowel sounds like the short a in "cat" or the long i in "kite," (they don't exist), you're good. And stick to them no matter where they come in the word: sake is pronounced sah-keh, not sah-kee or seyk. Westerners almost always get these wrong because they're used to vowels that change pronunciation depending where they are in the word. Don't do that! So by that rule, Hagun = "hah-goon" Nanatsusaya = "nah-nah-tsoo-sah-yah" Hachiman = "hah-chee-mahn" Seiryu = "seh-ee-ryoo" (When spoken quickly, the eh and ee here blend into something that sounds like "say-ryoo") |
