FF7 isn't bad. It just isn't special.

However, it was the first FF released in many years, the first in 3D, the first on the Playstation, the first with a AAA budget, the first with pre-planned localization, and the first beyond a point where video games started to become mainstream. As such, it was an entire generation's first experience with the JRPG genre at a time in their life that they could fully appreciate it.

We all view our first experience with some things as better than subsequent attempts. Witness Star Wars: most folks are shocked to hear that Episodes 1-3 are reviewed more favorably by younger generations than 4-6.

^ The Ivalice team produced my two of my three top favorite games, being FFT and Vagrant Story, and the style is really well-replicated in XII. I knew it was the same team as Vagrant as soon as they did a zoom-in of a character snooping around in the background in XII lol. They did a few Ogre games as well, I think.

Caiyuo. :D

Yeah, for me the big tipoff was Balthier's character design -- from the back, he looks like he stepped straight out of Vagrant Story. The Ivalice Alliance has produced some really quality stuff, though. How does Vagrant Story hold up after all these years? I'm sorta afraid of popping it in and being disappointed.

(Tactics Advance had fun gameplay for me. The story was pretty lol when you held it up next to Tactics/VS, but I enjoyed the judge system, as arbitrary as it could be.)
:D Lib! That's a good point about Balthier's design, although at least he was lucky enough not to get assless-shorts ala Ashley lol. Vagrant's still fun, but it's really the themes, dialogue and art style that suck me in every time, so I wouldn't say chaining the ***out of attacks to cheater-levels gets any more exciting than it ever was. Still, slaying giant crabs will always be worthwhile.

Tactics Advance's gameplay was the sore spot for me just because I was so into the original's battle system that it was more like me just being super spiteful that they would use the name and deviate from what I expected, which is I guess a big theme in this thread lol.

Yeah, the Han/Chewie dynamic (lol just typed that as "dynamis") that Balthier and Fran had was easily one of my favorite elements of the story. It was refreshing to see a male and female team having wild adventures and being BFF without getting romantic.
On the virtue of Fran being a hot bunny woman and Balthier being Balthier, I kind of assumed there had to be romance and was just waiting for the tiny white-boys-with-rabbitears to come running out of the airship at any moment lol.

IDK if I'd say AAA budget, Squaresoft tried to translate it theirselves, and while they did what they could, there were still more errors that slipped though than any other FF game I've seen.

Replace VII with VI and I'll agree.
^
Though I did enjoy vii and x almost as much. Tactics was pretty cool also.
