I absolutely hated 5... But I finished it.. lol.

When did this thread become "Which Final Fantasy is better than FFVII"? I thought the point was that both us as gamers and Square-Enix as developers should be casting aside our sentiments toward past FF titles in order for the series as a whole to move in the right direction.
On another note, screw Aeris! Galuf died first and no one gave a ***. >.<

To be honest, my favorite is FFX! The story was so AWESOME, the battlesystem was something new, the graphics were phenomenal at that time aswell, i actually enjoyed blitzball and the grid was a great leveling system.
And no i'm not one of those new-gen fans... i played everything from FF4(old version) on.
Don't get me wrong, i like every FF title in their own way, BUT FFX was my absolute winner ever, and will prolly stay.

This.
EDIT: Also, depending on how you played, Shadow of FFVI also died.
EDIT2: Tellah died first.

No. You have to wait for him or he dies. However, if you DO wait for him, you can get him, permanently, at the Colosseum.

Nah, if you left him on the floating continent Relm got Interceptor.
And the storyline imo was much better in VI than VII. I've never liked the character development in FFVII it's far too 'fast' for lack of a better word.
VII is good, don't get me wrong, but if the only reason you think it's the best is simply because it brought the most to the table on release, that's HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE. (Also it didn't)

Final Fantasy Wiki said: ...Shadow tried to move the Statues back in balance and stop Kefka so that the party could escape the Floating Continent. At this point, the player could choose to wait for him or to not wait for him. During the timed escape sequence if the player waits until the timer is in the last :05 Shadow will jump onto the airship at the last second. If the player waited for him, he would appear in the World of Ruin alive, otherwise, he would have presumably died.
Simply put, he's not seen for the remainder of the game.

Not to sound like a ***, but this dense statement makes anything else you say seem kinda weak.
EDIT: I really can't wrap my head around the fact that VI had a better storyline than VII. Character development was definitely superior in VI vs. VII, simply because after a certain point in VII, you can tell that its mostly just Cloud that has all the important dialogue.
But storyline? Kefka > Sephiroth, but mehhh. If anyone paid attention to 7's storyline, especially the Nibelheim incident, you'd be going "OH WTF THAT MAKES SO MUCH *** SENSE!"

Personally 6 was my favorite. But seriously argue about 7 all you want, but leave 8 out of this. 8 was just pure awfulness. Even 2 was better than 8! Even E.T. for Atari was better than 8, lol!

I found FFIX to be the best of the series, and I'll say why just cause I'm bored waiting for goddamn Morille Mortelle to pop.
FFIX had the most compelling villain of all the PSone+ Final Fantasy Games. It was nothing short of amazing following his(or her, I never really DID figure that one out...) journey from metrosexual manipulation mastermind, through s/him's emotional breakdown that eventually lead it down the path of total batshit crazy. One can almost sympathize with Kuja's plight as well, considering the implications. An observant FF player would note Kuja and Sephiroth share a lot of basic similarities in character, the whole "Misunderstood my origin/purpose now I must kill everything" but Kuja was handled with a lot more subtlety and grace, especially in the first acts of the game, where it's almost like a calculated game of chess to knock out the most powerful city-states of Alexandria and Lindblum. Sephiroth pretty much went "I'm mad, here's a meteor, thx".
Of course, they had to virtually ruin all that with the "True" last boss, one which was totally unnecessary, similar to what happened with FFX and Yu Yevon. At least in FFVII, the last boss is the *** you've been chasing for 30-80 hours.
The gameplay was also not terrible, about as strong as fixed-class pseudo-turn (Active Time Battle) based could be. With the option to specialize certain characters for certain roles by using the ability stones (A system it appears FFXIV is going to keep alive in spirit, hurray!) to fine tune a character. Just a rough example would be giving Steiner Cover/Eye for an Eye/Counter Attack to make him into the ultimate tank. FFIX also had the best Primary Minigame, Chocobo Hot and Cold. It combined elements of FFVII's great Chocobo Breeding subgame, with an incredible sense of Exploration/treasure hunting that rival's Morrowind's sense of "Reward the explorer". Top notch stuff. Tetra Master was also a very fun distraction once you got your mind around it, but in comparison to hot&cold it was forgettable.
Of course, I wouldn't be able to say I really love a game without being able to acknowledge the faults, and believe the other elements of the game transcend the shortcomings.
Particularly the atrocious character design. (Excluding Vivi, the Prototype for Tarutaru Black mages). Zidane looks like Martha Stewart, Steiner is a fatass with Eyeliner and Eiko and Garnet look like bobbleheads. Amarant and Freyja were both fitting, and passable, at least relative to the competition. Though through all that, their invdividual personalities shine through, and a Great character isn't a character everyone loves, a great character is a character that half of the people love, and half of the people absolutely hate. Strong emotions towards a personality (Good or Ill) Means a very strong character.
FF8 was terrible. I could not even get into the storyline because of how horrible the gameplay was. No progression, and so many breakable combos early on. (Sleep on weapon = Dead T-Rexaur during Tutorial when you're learning how to run from battles...) Unless FF8's story was a beacon of modern literary excellence, I doubt it's possible for me to think anything otherwise than FF8 is the low-point of the series.
I end this rant 0/9 On Spurrer Beret, go me.

IX is an absolutely incredible game. the Development system in my opinion was second only to V's job system.
Kuja was an awesome villain with awesome music, the only thing I kinda get annoyed with that game is the fact that no matter what happens and how many times I play it, I will always use Steiner and Vivi. (they are too awesome lol)
Amarant too.

IX's my favorite simply because the storyline really is the best in the series, and that's my honest to God opinion. Also all the characters, including Quina, are memorable and play an important role in the storyline. Vivi is just pure win. Even as annoying as Steiner was in the beginning, his serious nature really shined towards the ending.
Kuja was simply amazing.
FFVIII is very fun, regardless of whether I find it stupid or not. Hell, I'm playing it on my PSP right now. As I stated before, the ONLY bad thing about it is the junction system. But I mean, Square was trying new things, you really can't dog on them too hard for it.
FFIX's system was flawless. Being able to learn abilities from equipment was pretty win, and one of the highlights in the series imo. The game has its flaws, sure, but its still the most amazing Final Fantasies out there, simply because it took a step back from where FF was going and brought back the basics, what made Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy.

Another game that jacked that system exactly is Tales of Vesperia, and the game was far far better for it.
Would suggest everyone play it.

FF7 hit the early teens of its era. Created alot of ff players. As an old school player it didn't catch me, ff6 was still alot better.
This is why we can't have nice things!
