Book series called Codex Alera by Jim Butcher. First book is called Furies of Calderon. Oddly enough there is back story behind the series. Butcher was challenged by a friend to take two horrible ideas and make it into a best selling book. So he took Pokemon(guess he doesn't like Pokemon /cry) and combined it with Old Roman Legion and came up with this series. It's a very good read that steps away from typical magical systems.

idk if anyone has mentioned this, and i have a feeling some may laugh at it because of the pathetic movie that was released, but the eragon series is quite good, the last book should be finished shortly.

I don't know if it's been suggested but "The Hunger Games" series is one of my favorite. It's written by Suzanne Collins.

Edit - Just read OP, have no idea if this series is anything like the ones mentioned, sorry.

The Wise Man's Fear is finally out, so I'll give Patrick Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicles a mention. Hopefully the next book won't take four years to write, but I have to appreciate the attention he's given the series.

Simon R. Green has a few scifi/fantasy series that are generally relatively light but very fun reads. Nightside, Twilight of the Empire/Deathstalker, Hawk and Fisher/Forest Kingdom, and the Secret History series (which occasionally pulls characters from the other books but focuses on an original cast). Lots of offbeat humor, irreverent writing, and bigger-than-life characters.

I've been reading The Book of the New Sun (Gene Wolfe) lately and thoroughly enjoying it, but it's a rather heavy read. It's set in the far future and written in an autobiographical style, so there's a lot of things you'll have to infer from the text and occasionally he'll drop information like you're expected to know it already (which would be true for the intended audience of the "author"). It fits the style though and it's very well written.

Dark Tower Series is always good <_>

Do yourself a favour and read this. Even if you dont read any other Stephen King, read this. His greatest talent shines through in these novels, and that is making great characters with incredible depth.

Eddie alone has more depth than the entire cast of Twilight.

Another vote for this. By far the greatest series I've read. Wizards and Glass is by far the best of all the books, imo.

Totally! It was my favorite book of the DT series as well.

Loved the story of Susan & Roland <3

The first time I read that, I was about 16 and I was--and still am--shocked at how well King captured teenage love/lust.

Some of his best storytelling is in that book. I'd say it's worth the read even for those who aren't fans of the series.

^ This.

Exceptional storytelling. Immersive descriptions. Definately sucks you in. Rereading the first book (The Name of the Wind) now before I crack the spine on "Day 2".

All semi old books i read back when i used to read (which was back in my mid-late teen years lol. stopped reading around the time FFXI came out in NA >.>)
The RE/Doom ones i liked because of the games they were based on. and i liked the way mythology was used in the everworld series. I'm a sucker for ancient mythology being used in anything. gogo stargate series! (available on netflix instant queue now! all 10 seasons of SG-1, 5 of Atlantis, the 2 SG-1 movies, and SGU!)

Never seen this thread before but enjoyed reading through all the suggestions. I am even intrigued to look into a few of the selections suggested.

If you like Sci-fi you should really look into Robert Heinlein. Some of his books have been made into movies but the movies don't do them justice. Especially Starship Troopers which is one of my favorite books of all time. Very politically moved where as the movie is just a comic book. All his books are excellent though.

Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton, not his run of the mill type of book but a wonderful story.

Agreed. I loved "Stranger in a Strange Land" By Heinlein. Whether its satire or a new way of looking at things, he shows you a different side. Whether or not you agree with him is of course up to you.

Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time Series (Did you know he had something to do with the books Arnold's Conan the Barbarian was based off of?)

Orson Scott Card - I still haven't finished the series despite having started it about 10 years ago. Every time I pick it back up I'm happy I did.

Piers Anthony - Lighthearted fantasy/comedy. These books are nothing more than candy. If you're looking for tremendous depth you're barking up the wrong tree. However, frequent use of puns and amusing story lines make these a fun read. The Blue Adept series, if that's the right series title, was a bit more serious if still tongue in cheek.

Tad Williams: Otherland is amazing. His trilogy, Memory Sorrow and Thorn was one of the first really good fantasy series I read way back when I was around 10 years old. At times dark and forbidding, the world revolves around a servant boy and carries on from mostly his perspective through the entire series. His growth in character, however, is tremendous. I've started to pick up his "Shadow March" series. Its a good read as well though the fantasy seems to have kicked up the darker side a notch.

If you check out Williams' Wikipedia entry you'll see that he has some comics released through DC and helped write arcs for a few traditional series as well. Hes also writing a young adult series with his wife.

L.E. Modesitt, Jr: A hit or miss author with me. However, I must say that I'm a huge fan of his Towers of Sunset prequel to the Magic of Recluce series. This series might be for you but I stopped reading about halfway through.

Lloyd Alexander: Tarin Wanderer series. The book series is based off of, I believe Celtic, myth. Its also the basis of the name I use in game. I read this when I was about 8 and I sometimes think fondly of Gurgi's munchings and crunchings when eating crackers. You follow a young man through his coming of age in a high fantasy/mythic setting. You watch as he grows and as he explores the nature of what it is to not only be a man but also what it is to be a hero amid the almost apocalyptic upheaval of a high fantasy world. Short read but still a good one.

^^; I've agreed with a lot of people on the first half of my book suggestions, but I don't believe the last few were mentioned.

Awwwww. The book is VERY vivid and descriptive. Was one of those books where you simply couldn't wait to pick up again and read. I remember not wanting to put it down and flying through the chapters because it was such a great story. Greatest book really.

Not sure what kinda novels you're looking for but Tom Lloyd's "Twilight Reign" saga (No it doesn't involve teenage vampires, werewolves or any other stuff that makes me wanna frankly, choke myself or anyone else to death). first book is "Stormcaller" and honestly, fantastic reading. yes it's fantasy, yes it's not everyone's kinda thing but meh, just throwin in my 2 cents. the series isn't concluded yet and i'm awaiting the conclusive book(s). i recommend it to any fantasy novel fan. Stephen King said every author should have his or her own Lord of the Rings, and this is definately Tom's

I didn't see it mentioned but to be honest I did a lot of scanning.

Lois Mcmaster Bujold's Curse of Chalion as well as it's sequel Paladin of Souls and prequel The Hallowed Hunt.

Mistborn (the author was mentioned earlier but I'd like to point it out specifically) is also an awesome book with a very interesting "magic" system.

I don't have the patience to read Wheel of Time saga. For some reason it doesn't hook me up at all. I read the whole Sword of Truth Saga and Law of the Nines (Read this one if you haven't! Better yet if you finished Sword of Truth books), and true, Wizard's first rule was kinda slow after the beginning but after that, it just hooks you and you cant stop. Right now I'm reading the Witches of Mayfair series by Ann Rice, oldie, but goodie.
I also read the first book of Riftward Saga by Raymond Feist. Was very good, but didnt continue the second book as I had a very bad ebook copy and it was painful to read in Stanza.

I've read a lot of the books mentioned here, and looking forward to reading some of the ones I have not yet read ;) The first time I read The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss i was hooked, can't tell u how many times i've read it waiting for A Wise Man's Fear, which is finally here ^^ Here's a list of some fantasy books i've recently read that i don't believe have been mentioned yet, all worth your time and effort imo.

1. The Tawny Man Trilogy, by Robin Hobb, Completed Series
2. The Obsidion Trilogy, by Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory, Completed Series
3. The Kingmaker/Kingbreaker set and Fisherman's Children set by Karen Miller, completed series
4. The Chronicles of the Necromancer, by Gail Z. Martain, Completed series
5. Dragon Prince Trilogy, by Melanie Rawn, Completed Trilogy
6. The Tears of Artamon, by Sarah Ash, completed series.
7. The Black Prism by Brent Weeks, book one, un-completed series but worth the time and wait.

These are listed in no particular order, i've read and loved all of these books. So if your looking for a new series and haven't gotten to any of the above, go find these and enjoy ;)
