Okay so - the story goes, a friend of mine has decided it is time for him to get married - he is planning to propose at the start of the new year, now he asked me 'cute, romantic or sweet ways' in which he could do it. Now when he told me, the first thing that came to me was 12 years, 12 roses, then it hit me.
My plan was for him to buy 12 roses (one for every year they have been together so far) and replace one of the roses with a fake/plastic one, he could then add a message saying 'I will love you till the last rose dies; will you marry me.'
This is probably the most romantic gesture i have ever thought of, i know kinda stupid really - if you've got any ideas, or wanna share a story, please do (:
Yes, before anyone decides to mention it i know this is a gaming forum don't both posting unless you have something nice to comment on.
Merry Christmas, Happy New Year

I am suddenly overcome with an overwhelming sense of loneliness!!! lol ;;
In all seriousness, that was a very sweet thing to do and a good romantic idea. I imagine they got married? Or has it not happened yet? :P

If He's looking to propose.. They have fake roses that are actually carrying cases for rings... have him slip that one in the middle ^.~

Well as a woman, all a guy would have to do is get on one knee and hold out a ring to make me melt. Going the extra mile with roses with a meaning behind them, and with Hits suggestion, hiding the ring within a rose... that'd blow me away lol.

^This,
If they really love each other there is really no wrong way to propose, but being as how it's intended to be a once in a lifetime thing I can see how you'd wanna get extra creative lol.

"You can be my Sally and I'll be your Jack. You're broken but caring... while I'm a *** up, but I try my best. You are the yin to my yang, and the light to the darkness inside me. Where I fail, you succeed, and where you fall I pick you up. I doubt I'll ever be as good a person as you see me to be, and I doubt you will ever see yourself as gorgeous as I see you, but that's okay. We will never be perfect, and we have accepted that of each other, only because we have accepted that our mistakes make us beautiful.
We may be nothing but two broken people, Love. But...together, we make one perfect fix. Don't ya think?"
I'm a lot better with words than people would think. xD
Edit: As for the OP idea, it would seem really romantic, but it'd really depend on a woman. Some are the odd type and would rather the real ones to signify that although the world may change, they never have to.
Some women also would take it like...why add anything fake to the relationship, if your love is real?
Gonna assume you know her though and she's not THAT girl, so it would work nicely.

Reciting a poem as he hands each rose to her (with each rose being a part of the poem, perhaps tagged with their part) until he reaches the final rose to recite one last line, about how the rose is as undying as his love for her as you suggested wouldn't be bad at all :P
Opening the last rose at the end of the poem to expose the ring would probably make me faint. lol xD

Well if you were like me, I took my woman approx 150 kms to Toronto, Ontario, CANADA and said wth, made a reservation for dinner ontop the CN Tower and over looked a nice romantic Dinner and evening. After the dinner, I proposed to her out on the outside deck, where the warm wind ( at that altitude) and with a sunset, and did the one knee scenario.
She said "yes!", and about 50-100 give or take young University Girls Swooning and Gigglling , dying over the romantic situation, Saying " Say Yes!! Say Yes!! AWL... ; ;)
LOL... genuinly perfect! I think its all about timing!

How you propose really depends on the bond the couple shares. I had thought against posting a reply, but given that my own fiance had the same contemplation, maybe our little story will help a bit. There is one thing you have to keep in mind and know about us though: Our anniversary is April Fool's Day. Yep, not joking. Anyways, brief story:
We were out to dinner, having our anniversary dinner and what not (blah blah blah) when it comes time to exchange gifts. I made him a dinky little card and bought him two PSP games. Then he pushes this big box my way. It's the size of an Xbox, so I'm very confused at first. We already share one (he has "custody" of it until we're able to get married this April).
So I peel off the wrapping paper, and what do I see? A Christmas box. I'm no stranger to using weird boxes to throw a person off the trail, so I lift the lid without much thought. Inside it is another box just like it.... And another.... And another... Hurray, nesting boxes! By about box #6, I could've sworn the gingerbread men were smiling a bit too mockingly.
After ten boxes, the Christmas boxes ended and instead I saw a blue satin pouch. Inside it was a ring box. Now, by that point, I was a little teary-eyed. I didn't know if he was just turning my own prank against me, being a little mean, or if what I thought was happening was really happening. After all, we had talked about getting married for years, but it was always a question of affording it and being ready. I opened the ring box, and....
It was empty.
I looked up at him in question, only to see him down on one knee, holding the ring.
That may not be what your friend has in mind (heck, what many men ever think about doing when they're proposing), but sometimes even a goofy method is something that becomes a favorite memory. But again, I stress that it really depends on what kind of relationship the couple shares. Most girls would prefer the romantic proposal that movies portray and they have dreamed about ever since they were little girls. I'm far from the type to speak for most girls, but I think it's safe to say this: No matter how the guy does it, we want it to be special to US - the couple, mind you. I would say "unique", but really, what idea is really unique anymore.
I hope that helps with the thought process for your friend, Atnaas (and any other of you fellas - or ladies - hoping to one day claim someone for yourself). As long as your heart is in it.
And my apologies for the stupidly-long post. :x I'm sure anyone would agree that unfortunately, I'm not as short-winded as I wish to be. Sorry!

My favorite part to that whole post.. is the fact that the pouch was empty and he was on one knee. =) I dunno, I thought it was much more romantic that you didn't just open the satin pouch and see it. ^^;

My husband proposed in the middle of the winter, in the middle of the night. I thought it was so romantic that he took a knee in the cold, slushy snow. So sweet of him to be willing to get all uncomfortable and cold just to make me feel special. I think the best proposals are ones that are special to the individual couple, not the fairy-tale stuff. If your friend's girl likes roses, that's a cool idea that you have there. But if she likes other flowers better, you could do the same thing with her favorite flower to make it more personalized.

I didn't read the whole thread but I like your groundwork for the idea mostly. Would be cool if he gave her the first one by hand with a little note saying that something like a rose for every year we have been together, than put a clue for where the next one is. and another sweet comment on the next 10 roses followed by a clue to the location of the next one. And than for the last one like you said have a ring with it.

Oh my god I love it! Something like that would completely blow me away! On april fools day I don't know if I could handle all that lol. I have a great sense of humor, but toying around like that would drive me mad and then to finally see the ring... I'd wanna cry/laugh/beat his ***/say yes, all at the same time. What an awesome story. Kudos to your fiancé. :P

For my girlfriend:
She told me she wasn't going to go to prom since she couldn't go with me (I'm 10 years older). I had insisted she should go at least with some friends since it's a once in a lifetime sort of thing. I must admit, my own prom was a *** nightmare, but I had at least hoped that her prom would be fine and dandy. She ignored my suggestions and stayed home prom night, only to call me bummed out that same night since her friends went and she didn't. I felt sorry for her, so I told her I'd take her out somewhere fancy on the weekend. On the weekends, she usually comes over to my place early and we just hang out and watch movies all day, so she said that it'd be a nice change of things.
I went to my local supermarket and bought balloons, streamers, party hats, and then set up my apartment to look like a little prom. I made some pancakes and brownies, and had spaghetti ready. I decorated my apartment and made sure that, even though it wasn't a fancy ballroom, it at least looked cute. I told her that she should wear something nice since we were going out (and that option would still be open), so she came over in a dress. When she got here, she burst into tears, hugging me tightly and telling me that my prom decorations and set up was one of the sweetest things anyone had ever done for her. We ate breakfast, watched a movie, then went out to Olive Garden for lunch.
*----
Another thing that I just recently did was for Christmas. I had ordered her gift through ebay (a Hello Kitty DS game, along with a Hello Kitty DS starter kit) and told her that I'd feel very bad if her gift didn't arrive on time. It arrived like two days later, but I kept up the game of it having not arrived. She was saying it was ok, but I kept on apologizing for not being able to get her a gift on time. I got a large box and filled it with the following items: popcorn, playing cards, a box of tissues, and a bag of cotton balls. To each item I attached a small note.
On Christmas day (just yesterday), she came over and saw the large box labeled for her. She was slightly confused, but I made it seem as though that was the actual gift. She opened it and saw the first note on the inner flap of the box: "I'm sorry, sweetie, but your gift never arrived, I hope these gifts will make up for it..."
The items were set up so that each note was read in a certain order. The first note she saw was for the popcorn: "Here's some popcorn in case we watch a movie...". The playing cards were rubber banded onto the popcorn packet so that was the second note she read: "Or maybe we can play a game of Speed...?" The next message was visible on the Kleenex "Here's some tissue in case you cry... I'm sorry..."; and then on the bottom of the cotton balls "Or maybe you might want to play with make up... but wait..." (she likes playing with make up, I buy her make up kits all the time). The last "but wait" leads to the removal of the cotton balls which reveals the final note attached to the bottom of the box: "... what's that under the couch?"
At this point she was using the tissues. She looked under the couch to find another wrapped box. She opened it to find a long, written letter for her to keep, followed by her Hello Kitty gifts. She said it was one of the sweetest things I've done for her.
Now... who knows how I'll trump those for my proposal....

When I read this post I was touched. Finally a post on FFXIAH that isn't talking about fart jokes or slamming someone for their opinion on a pixilated item from game. I sat down and tried to think of the moments of romance I have had in my life.
Sadly enough 95% of them were self inspired for the person I was with which is probably why I am still unmarried (lol). So then I tried to think of what I would want. While I do like the rose idea it could be taken the wrong way(fake never sends a good impression with women). If a man made me wait 12 years for a proposal - well first off the woman is a saint because on year two my *** would have gotten frustrated, said goodbye and been done with him. But 12 years mean 12 years of memories. If it were me I would think of 12 places that meant something to us as a couple. Then I would send her on a scavenger hunt. Put a note at each place with what happened there - "remember when we ....." and make sure some one was there at each step to get her in the right direction to the next place. I would be at the last place waiting to tell her "First of all I want to thank you for 12 years of amazing memories. I was wondering if you would do me the honor of becoming my wife and help me to fill the rest of our lives with more wonderful memories together?" I would make sure to be on bended knee with the ring she wants also. Men, you get one chance to do this right. Put some serious effort into it. Guys have asked me before and I declined - if a man can't put any effort into asking for your hand, how much effort is he going to put into the marriage? For all you ladies out there - you are giving your life to another human being. How much is that worth to you? Don't settle for mediocrity. Every one should hold out for the person who will put it all on the line for you. Some one who values you and loves you and accepts you regardless of your flaws. Some one who can laugh with you at your bad days and help you celebrate the good ones. If you find that person make sure they know how special they are every day. You never know when it will be your last chance to say I love you to them.

Fake roses do give off a bad message when they're just that... a fake rose. But when you tie them into a message of never ending love, and when they hold the ring... would that still give anyone a bad message? It certainly wouldn't for me! I suppose it depends on the woman, but material things mean nothing to me. My father gave me a wooden medallion that he made a very long time ago that I've worn around my neck ever since. It means more to me than any gold or diamond band ever could. If my fiancé couldn't afford a gold band, he could propose to me with a friendship bracelet for all I care as long as his message moved me and truly meant something to both him and to me.
