I recently built a new PC and got everything setup and running, but I'm noticing that every now and then the game starts running faster than it should. Similar to if you were to have fps be unlimited, but when it happens I'm actually running faster in the game. Almost like a speed hack or something. I confirmed that I am running faster by running next to someone else and then suddenly getting a huge boost of speed and going way ahead of them. I keep the game on FrameRateDivisor 1 and when this happens the fps starts going as high as 90, and while it's above the expected ~60fps I am running faster. After a while it just goes back down to normal. Trying to figure out what is causing this and how to stop it.

Any help is appreciated!

Usually when fps uncapps via something like fastcs you don't really run faster you just animate faster

If you are really running faster than the person, how much faster?

yeah I'm familiar with fastcs and how that interacts. It's a lot faster. I jump pretty far ahead of them as long as it's going on and I can't make it stop. I try to do FrameRateDivisor 2 to lower to 30 but it doesn't change the FPS and I keep going fast. It usually happens in small hallways where there's very little going on around me.

I don't know how to measure how fast I'm going. I just had a friend walk next to me at the same time to make sure it's not just the odd animation of being higher than 60fps and I start gaining a lot of ground until it stops and he said it looks like i'm running faster on his screen too

Most likely - you downloaded a probably dodgy addon and it's speedhacking you.

Completely turned off all addons and ran the game through windower with no addons and it still happened. Not sure what was going on, but I just completely uninstalled and removed all traces for FFXI and windower and then reinstalled from scratch and it seems to be fine now.

I remember reading that old games, I think the mentioned example was tomb raider, had the the movement speed or the overal speed of the whole game tied to frame rate so if you played it unpatched on a more recent PC the game supposedly played much faster than intended. Maybe you uncapped frame rate in your graphics card controls and XI has something similar going on?

In FFXI, frame rate controls animation speed, but actually running faster would require messing with your system clock, I think?
