Fujito ruined the game!
I dont think its all pups, I just remember someone posting that video way back when and it showed how congested the camp there is.
Asura.Eiryl said: » Every other server being a ghost town caused asuras congestion. No. Asura is full because there are hundreds of players playing across thousands of accounts. The actual elephant in the room... with the 5 other elephants all lined up neatly behind it in matching lockstyles. Self inflicted. No to a merge, we would all be fighting to light the Jeuno lamps and that's no way to live.

Why would a person with 6 accounts go to a highly populated server where they can never find a free camp.
That makes no sense what so ever. Not like a 6 boxer is joining any Pugs. Dodik said: » Why would a person with 6 accounts go to a highly populated server where they can never find a free camp. That makes no sense what so ever. a lot of them need to have their gear merced because having 6 characters isn't enough to actually clear things with them I do know multiboxers that moved main/alt accounts to Asura just to get clears then moved back.
Some kept a char on Asura for the Pugs. These are the exception though. This will shock no one, but small servers have a lot of multi boxers. Small groups, if you're friends with others you help each other out to get clears on various characters as needed without needing to "play" 4 5 or 6 boxes at once. I think it's hilarious that anyone would try to make an argument to move to Asura. It's a lot easier to come up with reasons to not be there. The only thing I missed was a more active economy, but with Sortie and Limbus(so far) having no gil sinks... good riddance. Shiva.Thorny said: » Just from a business standpoint, there's no issue with small servers. If the gameplay experience is meh and people can pay the extra $18 to transfer, that's an additional revenue stream. I mean, it depends. If a new player logs onto a smaller server and discovers it's a ghost town, they might conclude the game is dead and move on. This has happened with a lot of the newer MMOs, and I would think FFXI at this point in it's life cycle probably doesn't get that as much, but still. If you wanted to sell a stack of dark matter, it will sell the same day. If you're on any of the bottom 12 servers, it might sell in a week. Depending on how aggressively you undercut it. Or you get the urge to make 10 Crocea, they will sell in 1-2 days on Asura, it'll take an entire month on somewhere like Valefor. Alex, HMP, PBR all sell 10x faster on asura, and conversely are 10x easier to buy on asura. Carbuncle.Maletaru said: » What if you're the only person with a Leathercraft shield on your tiny server? Now suddenly 5 more Leathercrafters come over from the one that just merged into you. What if you've got a lock on the Sif's Macrame market, and now there are 3 new people who sell them? What if the server you transfer to has synthesis materials, or JSE materials, at twice the price of the one you're leaving? 99.9% of brand new to FFXI players are being influenced to play it from an outside source, either via a streamer or from reddit or something else, and through this influence will wind up on a popular server, they wont land on "a dead server". Tourism yes, residence no. Vacation on Asura during a discount campaign when you want some souvenirs. I would only live there if I were in the service industry and it was my job to farm gil or content for other people. Paying $20 to buy something from asura is dumb, too
(unless youre buying a billion to jump back with to sell for 1.3 billion) Which neither can be done anymore starting in 6 days. For a guy who talks so big about how much money he makes selling gil, he seems to be very concerned about what people do with 20 bucks.
Seems like a huge mask off moment if he considers someone burning 20 bucks of their disposable income for something they consider necessary to enhance their experience playing FFXI to be stupid, and this tells me he values 20 bucks to be a lot of money, which means hes not making nearly as much money selling gil as he says he is. Reopen Hades! It's time to go home!

I would think some people end up playing because it's a mainline FF entry. Every MMO gains players through outside sources. Marketing, word of mouth, etc. FFXI is no different (in this case I think the crossover with FFXIV is bringing in new people). That's why making new players happy with what they see is important. We want them to stick around. Signing into a dead server on a MMO doesn't accomplish that (unless they're specifically looking for a solo experience) which I guess FFXI can accommodate to some degree. If someone looks at the UI, doesn't see any population indicators or any reason to select a different server, and doesn't have the presence of mind to google 'does it matter what server I join on FFXI'...
I don't think they have the resourcefulness to play through the game, anyway. Asura.Eiryl said: » If you're on any of the bottom 12 servers, it might sell in a week. Depending on how aggressively you undercut it. Dumbest hot take of the day. Carbuncle currently has 0 stacks of DM on AH, and the price is spiking because there's not enough supply. I've bought 11 stacks in the last ~3 months and I'm just one person. Asura.Eiryl said: » Or you get the urge to make 10 Crocea, they will sell in 1-2 days on Asura, it'll take an entire month on somewhere like Valefor. This is just incredibly stupid behavior, why in the absolute *** would you make 10 of the same sword, on any server? Also really, REALLY bad math. 1.331 Crocea sell/day on Asura. If you were the only person who ever sold a Crocea, it would take at least a week to sell 10. Spoilers: Asura.Eiryl said: » Alex, HMP, PBR all sell 10x faster on asura, and conversely are 10x easier to buy on asura. Yeah, but also: you have 10x as much competition for buying (and selling) those things. If there are 20 people trying to buy the same 100 stacks of Alex, where there are 2 people buying them on Cerberus... Shichishito said: » This can be summarised under "BUT MUH MONOPOLY!!1!" and "MUH RMT ACTIVITY!!1!1!!!" Increasing the competition for purchasing materials and also increasing competition for selling items will have unintended consequences for everyone, not just crafters, but literally anyone who buys and sells things. Maybe you normally sell HMP, well now congratulations, you just imported thousands of HMP and people doing Ambu/Voidwatch, who are trying to sell their HMP. Maybe it will be great because only things you want to buy will go down in price, and everything you want to sell will go up in price, but...I don't think that's very likely to happen. Who said a ***' thing about RMT? I think it's a bit hilarious that the first thing your mind goes to is RMT when any kind of gil is involved. Some people make gil to play the video game, not to buy or sell it for RL money. Wild thought I know. Also remember that current FF14 content is Echos of Vanadiel. I'm sure a lot of people that played briefly 20 years ago might be playing this and coming back.

We'd want to create the best new player experience for those folks so they feel inclined to stick around during the massive FFXIV content droughts. FF14 players coming to explore FF11 are most likely going to fall in one of two categories:
1-were previous FFXI players and have knowledge of sites like FFXI and BG and know what to look for 2-have connections to people who fall under #1 and will ask them for guidance Asura.Eiryl said: » Paying $20 to buy something from asura is dumb, too It wasn't just to buy something. I left a loaded mule behind to sell things and used the earnings to buy things I couldn't get at home. You can just send another mule at the same time you're bringing the first back, but I really didn't even need to do that. As I said, Sortie and Limbus are not gil sinks so we don't really have to care about gil beyond a certain point.
