Somewhere in the ffxiah forums, somebody said they read an article that states that only six people are working full time on FFXI. I would like to read that article. If somebody can please post a link to the original article it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I'm afraid there are only 2. One is CurePlease, and the other multiboxes 5 accounts.

They have 6 planners, one for each part of the game. They also use FFXIV texture artists to make new outfits and monsters sometimes and they also pay for teams of testers for major patches.

6 is more than enough
Never post again

The lack of dedicated testers isn't uncommon in software development (they're often floating once tests are sufficiently automated)...but the lack of developer/engineering support is concerning. Didn't Matsui say to Famitsu last year that they now have 2 dedicated engineers? Dropped from 2 to 0 really fast...

Some of you are probably already aware of this, but at present the FINAL FANTASY XI development team consists of a total of six planners. Each one has a field that they specialize in, where it be items, battles, system-side changes, or storytelling—new content must be created in tandem with their everyday tasks.

That reads to me like their everyday tasks are not FFXI stuff, to be honest. What everyday tasks would these people have for FFXI? So, likely not 6 full time employees, but 6 employees who occasionally do stuff for it.

If you think about, why would they (SE) want to spend more money to manage a game that is self sustaining already? Yes, they'll have a few updates here and there but it's all recycled content at the moment. It's the same zones with a new colors etc.

You still need someone to monitor not so much as manage. I know this as someone who develops systems. You have someone (or a team) develop the foundation and bring it to where it's nearly self-sustainable minus some minor maintenance and you no longer need the crew size you had. This is why certain jobs in design/development fields, I would never want to be since you do all the hard work then become immediately expendable.

It's really not, the game does not have programmers because it does not need them.

All updates are made with a scripting language (that all the planners can use) and they just make new content and patches with this scripting language. They don't really need to make new core components to the game above and beyond what they already have because they have so many components already.

To use an analogy, making new patches for FFXI right now is akin to re-purposing lego pieces. Ambuscade is just a reworked legion for example. They can still tweak existing components too if they need to, you don't need expensive programmers on the team who barely do anything for that.

It's funny how we went from "PLEASE DON'T SHUT THE GAME DOWN!" to "6 isn't enough yo!"

I get what you're saying, but I don't agree with it. New NPCs still interact with an existing NPC API on the back end. I highly doubt there are tools to automatically generate NPC interactions and responses, without effecting other NPCs. (This is why, SE tends to remove the NPC from the game when there's an issue).

Anyway, we both can only speculate, but my opinion is the same: I think you're making light of the tasks required to update the game. A build is created, it gets tested with regression and integration tests in a pre-production environment and then pushed to production (the servers we play on). It doesn't matter if the code is C++ or a rinky-dink scripting language, the process for testing and validation exists and the people who are responsible for those changes need to be fully aware of that process. Today, it looks like those people are split between many of SE's projects/products (given that they frequently borrowing from FF14's people resources).

I agree with you there buddy. SE knows this games still brings in a lot of dough and they don't need to invest a lot to maintain it. I'm sure there are those who continue to monitor the game. It's just not their primary focus at the moment.

So they have 6 planners working.... part-time.

So if what these guys do is plan then who is doing the actual work in putting the plans into motion?

Well, the game is old. It's like 20 years old! The guys working on it originally must have been retired.

What you are left with are 6 part-timers modding the game.

I don't think you would... I seen reviews of SE on Glassdoor.com. The reviews are pretty miserable.

I wouldn't be surprised. I know someone who worked at Blizzard and he said it was bad. Working for an MMO sounds cool though.
