Kotaku covers XI... oh boy..

I've been playing the game wrong all these years. I didn't know I didn't have spells and abilities or that the game is entirely singleplayer now. Incredibly accurate;
Quote: a lot of the experience is spent watching things play out instead of actively participating I legit don't see how anyone could find watching ffxi play itself all that interesting starting out... or how we used to back then, aside from addiction. One of XI's current core problems is that a ton of people who loved the game quit during/after RoV thinking all support for the game was ending outside of "small bug fixes." This was a massive blunder on SE's part and I am honestly shocked XI is still going strong today in spite of it.
Say what you want about Kotaku, but this is extremely good PR for XI. The #1 thing XI needs right now is any positive PR that can connect to those who quit before/after RoV to let them know the game they loved it still going strong and there's a future to look forward to for XI. Open up pay2unban they'll come flooding back
Any PR is good PR, that's for sure. This article actually highlights, although unintentionally, how terrible the initial experience for a new player is and how little it reflects the actual modern XI experience. Fresh account -> hitting 99 is a tedious, lonely chore that probably sends 95% of interested players away.
How is this a bad article? It accurately describes the game and its charm (and why it's different from FF14). The only fault is that she wrote the article too soon, and is making a lot of judgments about the game as a whole before she's reached endgame. The "single-player experience" is largely just 1-99.
Aside from that, I think the article is a nice characterization of the game state. I'd like to see Heather come back with another article after experiencing some of the end-game and seeing what modern XI really is and not what the remnants of the past the initial 1-99 experience is that makes up 5% of the game.
You really don't want to see that article about endgame if they played on any server that wasn't asura. tl;dr I afked for 8 hours and did literally nothing, great game
and you REALLY don't want to see that article about endgame if they DID play on asura. tl;dr i tried to do a ton of stuff but they just kept calling me a noob and said i need a rema Seems weird seeing a spark/bayld geared THF offering 500k for a player he doesnt even know well.

Well said brother.. /thread.. PR is healthy.. Marketing is what this game needs.. Keep spreading the good and strong word to your friends about Retail FFXI and get them in.. That article wasn't bad at all. It explains, in a very rudimentary way, the experience of a new player perspective, along with the struggles one might expect to face. The story of the wandering thief was cute (couldn't have been Asura, he'd have charged her for talking to him), kind of reminds me of what it was like to be fresh and newbish. Not a bad article at all
It could have easily been someone's mule account with extra funds stashed on it. 500k is 30 minutes of killing random monsters during the right quest

If one isn't 99 they haven't played the game, just as simple as that anymore. The same website talked about the notoriously ham-fisted Salvage bans on this day 10 years ago.

I just found it funny that the two postings about the game were exactly a decade apart. Like others, I am glad to see it getting positive publicity after all this time though. Quote: Final Fantasy XI is less a theme park and more a national park, a loose connection of distinct landmarks connected by wandering trails and surrounded by barely-tamed wilderness. its a really nice analogy for ffxi vs modern mmos. Hopefully, the other pillars of the MMO experience will keep new players engaged until more complex combat systems develop - just like they did for us. I wont lie, I got bored halfway reading this and clicked a link to a ff14 article
